Encarnacion to the Bronx for their 27th prospect, a 19yo pitcher plus salary relief. I wonder if this will be the first domino to fall and set the tone for expected deals. It's clear Seattle valued youth, upside, 40 man flex, and salary relief over maximizing prospect return and nearness to the majors. IMO, the twins have done a poor job in recent years in managing the back of the 40 man. Often trading for guys that must be added and shedding very few while losing guys we would have hoped to protect. In the future I'd like to see us advance guys faster, evaluate sooner, trade guys earlier and release gus at all. We can continue to dumpster dive if the player available is an actual upgrade, not just a "he should be on someone's 40" pick up. Better internal management should make those additions easier.

Article: Twins Prospect Spotlight: Jake Reed
Jham replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think you may be correct. I think this allows him to push more with his lower body while staying balanced. Don't know if this is a Wes Johnson thing but I like it. Pushing up of the rubber gives the illusion of a low to high release while still maintaining some height. Fastball can appear to rise. Break on of speed seems more dramatic. Pat Neshek is the first guy that comes to mind. Threw hard for sidewinder. -
Article: Why Miguel Sano's Strikeouts Are Not a Problem
Jham replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm not disputing that Sano could be hindered by bad luck. Just thought that the HR might even it out. Apparently he's sustained this level of HR production for long stretches previously. Maybe this is a return to 2017 form. Let's hope. I remain somewhat skeptical. I'm encouraged by his willingness to go the other way, for instance, but would like to see how he handles a slump before saying "don't worry about cutting back on k's," because I think that catches up with him before he catches up with babip. -

That's actually the point. More of his hard hit balls are leaving the park than usual. Balls that likely would have been hits if they stayed in the yard are HR. Thus high hard contact%, lower babip. Potentially luck neutral. As babip normalizes up so too will his HR numbers down. Which was my point on Ks being more of a problem than recognized because his numbers are inflated by an unsustainable HR rate. -

It's not a problem until it is a problem. We've seem him K like this. We've seen him hit like this. We've also seen him struggle and go through lengthy power slumps. He'll slump again (all hitters do) and when he does he'll offer almost no value. To say the k's aren't a problem is short sighted and not realistic. He's got plus power. I'm not sure it's elite though. In 9 professional seasons, he's only topped 30 HR twice with 35 off A and AA pitching being his career best. -
Article: Craig Kimbrel and Risk Tolerance
Jham replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Fair. I think kimbrel is better than Cobb or Lynn. I just don't see how a third year was a substantial risk when we're essentially looking for this year and the playoffs. A third year seems like a silly reason to drop out of the race. We have payroll flexibility. 3 years isn't a long contract. And despite all the talk of risk, he has significant upside as well. Focusing in upside, it is exceedingly unlikely we trade for a guy with Kimbrel upside, let alone experience and pure stuff. It's unlikely we're willing to part with more than the Astros, Brewers, Dodgers, and Yankees who have all showed the willingness to part with significant assets. You can assume that Kimbrel will struggle initially. It could be equally "safe to assume" that Kimbrel will come back rested, rejuvenated and healthier for the time off. A third year for a team with 2 players signed past this year (for cheap) and an obvious need for help in the pen this year is no risk at all. Especially since that third year is only 1 more year from what we offered. Maybe he still signs with Chicago. But to not even try to match isn't trying, imo. Also, we could have signed Kimbrel AND traded for another stopper. If we handed the ball to Kimbrel, Rogers, and Giles? Shorten the games with our offense, and suddenly I'm loving our shot at the whole thing. -

I agree whole heartedly on your second point. I hate the term untouchable because those gus are frequently what it takes to really improve your club. Recent untouchables include Jay, Stewart, Gordon, Romero, Sano, and Buxton. Every one of those players trade value has dropped significantly other than maybe Buxton who has probably only lost a little. Regarding trading more to get less, that's the nature of the trade deadline. All I was saying is that if you feel we needed to add arms before the season, and now that need is more evident than ever, why would you not feel like Kimbrel was a huge missed opportunity? We still need a guy. We won't be able to add anyone for another 40 games most likely, and we don't know if we'll get the guys we want. It's much more likely we'll settle for guys that aren't big upgrades that profile as worse than Kimbrel. Could Kimbrel be the next Glen Perkins or Reed? Of course. Point is, free agency is gone, late free agency is gone. We're running out of options at the same time our need is becoming more dire. -

Jham replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I don't get this argument either. If you're mad at not getting help in the off-season, why are you not upset about missing ot on Kimbrel? We can't go back to winter meetings. We can't untrade Pressley. 3 years for Kimbrel isn't an ideal option. But it was probably the best option left. Watch us get outbid for Giles and Smith and then overpay for guys that don't really make us better. We've been pointing for this year for at least 3 or 4 years. We're now pinning our hopes on Duffey, or Hildenberger returning to dominance or giving up top prospects for guys who might not be better than Kimbrel. -
If anything, it appears Gibby didn't pray hard enough... He got the swings and misses. Got the k's. Some balls left the yard. Looked mostly fine to me.

I'm not sure anyone turned on him. I think maybe some turned on Baldelli. I was surprised he came ot for the 7th. He had walked a guy on 4 pitches as I recall, in the 6th before getting a double play. A bounce off his emotional debut was expected and he pitched pretty well to keep us in it without his best stuff. The rest of the team including the manager did him no favors, imo.

Wait, Pineda is better than Smeltzer right? Smeltzer = Tommy Milone? Am I missing something?

Article: Week in Review: Test Passed in Tampa
Jham replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Well, I think they're underselling how good we are. They did outscore us this weekend, indicating a potential sequencing issue, and they're a stats focused organization, so I see where they're coming from. They probably saw us perhaps juggling the rotation to make sure our top guys pitched while we avoided Snell, and Glasnow who will be back soon enough. Crohn had a big hit. They couldn't have loved that. But they see us starting their castoffs, it's hard not to feel superior. Odo has an xFIP of 4.28 and a Fip 2.80. That's because he's giving up 1/2 as many homers as last year. his ks are up with his velo, and walks are down, a great combo pointing to a real change, but the HR will come. So they're right about him getting lucky. even his FIP is up above his era by nearly a run. I certainly don't take for granted that we're a better team now, let alone in August when Glasnow is back. I certainly hope our front office doesn't assume that either.- 28 replies

Article: MIN 9, TB 7: Odorizzi Shines In Tampa Return
Jham replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Regarding the pitch count, Odo was facing a really good team that doesn't give away at bats and makes the pitcher work. He did great. I don't know what Tampa was thinking cutting CJ Crohn, but thanks. It's sort of working for them, but they gave away an asset in a competitive year when they'll likely be a buyer, all for limited salary relief. For whatever reason, I'm not that worried about Magill and Parker. Blow outs either way make it tough for relievers who rely on adrenaline to focus in. Sometimes they might even try some new stuff.- 27 replies

Article: Shoulder Impingement Q & A
Jham replied to Heezy1323's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
But do you have any theological background, since it's a shoulder? Dr. James Andrews is pretty good. Is there a Rev. James Andrews by chance? -
The old twins never negotiated contracts midseason. I'd look to extend some guys. But if an nl contender wanted to trade for Castro? If we could get a King's ransom for Odo or Gibby? If we wanted to bring up Kiriloff or roll with Arraez and teams wanted Sano or Schoop more than they wanted Dozier but less than Machado? If we're concerned Cruz's wrist will linger and have doubts about picking up his option, but teams are calling? Right now, it appears that we don't need everyone in order to win. We traded Pressley last year even though we needed him. And Garcia the year before. I think we'll trade prospects to upgrade the pen. I think we'll look to add starters with control and shed a starter(s) who are likely to walk while their value is high. Again, not advocating for a limited sell, just think it's very possible.

Not sellers per se. I suspect we'll be both because their stated goal is sustained success. I'm not sure they can help themselves. Same reason we traded for jaime Garcia then traded him days later. We feel like we can trade some of our talent and still win. Arraez for Schoop, Kiriloff for Crohn, etc. If we add people, we'll have to make room. There's no chance we resign everyone next year. We'll be tempted to grab a return before they go. But agreed, not at the expense of the division.

I actually think we might be actual sellers at the deadline, as well as buyers. This team was built to tear down. Lots of expiring deals and 1 year contracts. I doubt the plan was for Cruz, Cron, Sano, Rosie, Schoop, Castro, Parker, Gibby, Perez, Odo, May and Pineda to all be on the team the entire year. I doubt the idea was for Gordon, Arraez, Gonsalves, Romero, Thorpe, Vasquez, Kiriloff and Rooker to remain in the minors all year. We may buy, but I'm almost positive we'll be doing some selling to restock the farm as well. Schoop, Castro, Sano and Rosie I think may be shopped along with May, Parker, Pineda and Gibby depending on our adds.
