Yet, Tom Pohlad tried to convince us that we would be a contender if we kept the remaining players and added Bell, Rogers, and Banda. Starting a rebuild in this situation is what smart teams do. The Cardinals traded off their best players and they were in better shape than us. Milwaukee and Cleveland do it as a matter of practice. What is absolute incompetence is reversing the process after what they did at the deadline. What they should have done was to trade Pablo and eat $10M of his salary and used the savings to sign 2 good BP arms instead of Rogers and Banda. The $11.75M in saving from Pablo, plus the $3.625 would have given them $14.625 to spend on 2 RPs. We would have been a lot better and had a great asset or two to trade at the deadline if they were not in contention. My guess is that Tom Pohlad really wanted to cut salary but he had to find a way to convince fans this team was a contender despite a great deal of evidence to the contrary. He came up with the brilliant plan of convincing fans they would be a contender if they just held onto Ryan and Lopez. Never mind they were doing virtually nothing to replace 4 very good RPs and the offense was still very suspect. Falvey didn’t want the baseball world to think he was this incompetent so he fought Pohlad and Pohlad predictably won.

He has played 2B twice this year and 5 games last year so SSS. However, I think that's a viable option but it might be a dip your toe in the water kind of experiment since he has been pretty average offensively so far in 2026. -

I have to admit the bring up Culpepper part was a knee jerk reaction. He needs to prove he is ready and he is not quite there. I also understand why they might hold Rodriguez back for a while. His approach is quite different (much more aggressive) this year which I am guessing the AAA coaches are working with him on. Adjusting his approach would be a lot harder at the ML level so I am guessing that's why Erod is still playing in St. Paul. Gonzalez played 1st again last night and he looks like he can make the transition but he is not tearing it up either. -

I can see your point if you think they are a legit contender. Do you think that they are a legit contender or that replacing Wallner/Outman will make them a contender. IMO, the sooner they change their decision making away from the fallacy of contending this year and start making decisions to facilitate building a winner, the better. I agree that moving on from Wallner / Outman is the right decision but for a totally different reason. They are not going to contend by moving these players up but it will be more interesting to watch and they will facilitate reconstructing the roster to contend in the not so distant future. Wallner down / Emma up and share OF playing time between Buxton, Martin, Larnach, and Emma. Martin and Emma can both backup CF so DFA Outman and bring up Culpepper. -
It had not even crossed my mind he would have another 5 starts in a row with no runs and a sub .5 whip. If that happens, I could see it but he turned 22 on Tuesday so if he ends up playing half the season at AA that would be fantastic. The next few years look pretty promising with Bradley, Able, Prielipp, Quick. and perhaps Rojas?

This was his 1st A+ game. he was just promoted from Fort Meyers to Cedar Rapids. Let's give him a dozen high-A starts before sending him to AA.

Diaw and Tait sound like a great catching Duo. Whoever is not catching can play a different position or DH.

IDK ... They wouldn't get anything for him so why not send him to AAA and get rid of some of that movement or at least try some type of change because this is not working at the ML level. See if he can be salvaged. Send him down and bring up eRod. -
Sorry! Sometimes sarcasm goes right over my head because crazier statements have been made here in all seriousness. The Abel and Bradley deals are making Falvey look pretty smart and of course he made the Ryan and Lopez deals too. The most recent high pitching picks Prielipp, Soto and Quick look pretty good at the moment as well. Now, they have made some terrible early round picks like Cavaco / Sabato and quite a few others but the most recent picks have been pretty good.

I did not care for the Varland trade but understood there is greater potential value in a starter as compared to a reliever. In aggregate, the sell-off is looking like a major boost toward putting a contender on the field. They traded 3 valuable assets in Duran, Jax, and Varland. The Duran and Jax trades are looking very good. Those trades look like they will be providing significant value long after Duran and Jax would have been gone through free agency. The Varland deal is definitely more questionable. They could have held on to him and cashed in at some point in the future. Now, if Rojas becomes a 2 or 3, and Roden is a contributor, it's hard to criticize the timing of the move.

Let's try to be a little more objective or at least acknowledge reality. If Falvey is an idiot based on the Vasquez decision than the vast majority of posters here (including me) are idiots too because most of us were looking forward to the end of Vazquez in Minnesota. Anyone here who would have predicted this kind of performance from Vazquez would have been ridiculed.

I have not seen Mendez at 1B. It's quite possible he just does not look like he has a chance to ever play 1B so they are sticking with LF. I have seen Gonzalez at 1B twice. He at least looked like he might be able to make it work.

They have only played Mendez at 1B twice so far according to BB Reference. They don't have any other legit prospects for 1B in Wichita so I hope we see more of Mendez at 1B.

It's hard to imagine Ross is suddenly this much better than he has been the previous 4 years in Milb. I am very hopeful he is the breakout of all breakout players. His skill set would be a huge boost to this team. A couple of the other AA guys are off to a great start. Mendez has been a beast. Let's hope he can transition to 1B because what I have seen of him in the OF is not good. Olivar is the guy I am really pulling for because he could pair very nicely with Tait. Those guys could both have enough bat to play another position or DH when they are not catching. Off course, one is a LHP and the other RH. Those two together could really help roster depth.

Martin's career OPS against LHP is 801, and .683 against RHP. Are you looking at 2026 where he has only had 17 ABs against RHP? I like Martin well enough and would be fine with giving him more opportunity in the short-term against RHP. However, I sure hope Rodriguez and Jenkins perform significantly better than Martin against RHP. Martin profiles as the ideal 4th OFer.

I like where you are going with this. Erod would not be blocked with Buck / Martin and Erod the starting OF and Larnach the primary DH. However, Wallner goes to AAA in that scenario and he is behind Roden for coming back. It would be nice to see some more athleticism on this team. They can shop Larnach at the deadline if he is still hitting and replace him with one of Jenkins / Roden / Wallner or Gonzalez.

What about their off-season would have you believe they are serious about winning? Dropping the payroll again does not signify a serious attempt to win. Even one legit high-leverage RP would have made a significant difference. The personnel decisions were pretty good given the restrictions resulting from their decision to decrease payroll. RPs are always an iffy investment but had they could have $13.6M on legit late inning guys instead of $3.6M on Rogers and Banda and still ben $15M under last year. Why would you lump a guy with an wRC+ of 135 (Bell) in with Outman and Clemens. The consensus around here seemed to be for Lowe (91 wRC+) Bell is outperforming him significantly so why is Bell still getting flack other than we knew he is not a good defender. Hind sight be 20/20, they should have trade Lopez and spent the $20M in the BP. If the team failed, those guys probably would have had value at the trade deadline.

I have been watching most of the Saints games and Culpepper will be a big upgrade defensively at SS. While I have never been high on Lee, his recent offensive improvement complicates the issue. We don't want Culpepper playing a part-time role and pulling Lee when he is hot makes no sense assuming Lewis will be back soon. Would they consider playing Lee or Keaschall at 2B? I also like the idea of bringing up Roden. Outman is DFAed. Roden and Larnach play the corner OF positions and Martin plays 2B. Keaschall or Lee to 1B, Bell is the DH. Walner may need to be sent down and Clemons might need to be cut in this process as well.

They played Roden in Center with Rodriguez in RF and Fedko in LF. Are they preparing for Roden to back up Buxton in CF? Roden and Martin are both better options than Outman. Not as good defensively but much better offensively. Eventually Jenkins or Rodriguez will get that role. First as a BU but Buxton probably gives way to one of them in the not-too-distant future. For now, spare us from Outman and let Roden / Martin / Kriedler fill that role. It was also good to see Gonzalez getting time at 1B last night.

I agree. Let's get the show on the road. They are probably not feeling any sense of urgency given he is a year or more away and perhaps they are hoping to make him serviceable at both positions.

Castro didn't tear up the minors and was released after not showing well at the ML level. This is too small of a sample size to believe Ross has changed his offensive projection just yet. However, if his bat remains fairly dominant, he could be great in the "Castro Role". I would love to see Culpepper up in 4-6 weeks with Ross taking his spot in St. Paul. BTW .... Culpepper looked very good at SS last night.
