  1. truth hurts sometimes. How long are you going to pitch in the minors until you become a career minor leaguer. He's not there yet, but...
  2. absolutely true, but if you're the manager, and you have a player who's strike zone judgement is in question, and his ability to make contact poor, would you give him the green light on that many 3-0 counts?
  3. to be fair 48% of his 3-0 counts had a green light, that should be all of his hacks... Maybe the manager has more to do with performance at the plate than we thought....
  4. no way, if Schafer gets the nod, Robinson will be 4th OF
  5. So Pinto isn't up for backup catcher, just Herrmann and Fryer? I hope Arcia gets some more time to mature and develop. As Moli said, he's 23 and still has a ton of potential. Maybe AAA is a good place for Arcia to start 2015. I wish that wasn't the case.
  6. i like the optimistic idea of Rosario, but what if he struggles? How will the Twins respond? Quick hook to triple a, or ride it out like Hicks, or somewhere in between? There's a lot of uncertainty there, but the upside of having Rosario with some good MLB experience' being the CF for as long as needed and being the defensive replacement for Arcia in the late innings, or moving Arcia to DH or RF and taking over left when Buxton comes up is really appealing. Realistically, Rosario needs more minor league seasoning before becoming a regular big leaguer.
  7. whom do you suppose pays John to write? Maybe I shouldn't post this... But shhh... Don't tell.... I get this service for free! I don't know if John gets paid to write, it doesn't matter, I just wouldn't make that assumption, unless he works for say NBC sports hardball talk, or something. Personally I would agree, reading is hard, and one of the few things harder is writing, which is why I rarely blog and my posts are terrible but I appreciate all of the hard work by all of the TD contributors and community' especially during spring training. Some spring soon I'll take John's advice and make the trip.
  8. this is how it should have happened, but it didn't. 2014 wasn't his first season in the majors, it was his second. His hitting was aweful but can be improved. His fielding was awful that can be improved too. So you have a prospect who is an awful hitter and poor fielder(-10.9 UZR per Fangraphs) on the big league club. That's doing him and the club a huge favor. Are Robinson/Schaffer batter? Maybe fielding wise, but if they struggle, who cares they aren't prospects. All of Hicks' issues might be fixable but is the big leagues the place to do it?
  9. so defensive metrics should be weighted based on runs avoided? Say a catch made with the bases loaded and two outs should be weighted heavier than a catch made with bases clear and no outs? Or robbing a home run?
  10. It's definitely not zero, and poor fielding can cause home runs
  11. im no expert, but Ken Rosenthal says that sign and trades are still banned. The point is to keep teams from accumulating sandwich picks via sign and trade deals. In this case if sign and trades were legal the Twins could trade Stauffer to San Diego, San Diego could then have Stauffer and the Comp pick they received for Stauffer (assuming qualifying offer was made) and the Twins would get whatever the agreed upon tradeable asset, say AAAA CFer. It would drive up the instances of qualifying offers and collusion.
  12. I should hope Vargas gets a long leash this spring, and maybe both Buxton and Rosario man the OF so Torii can be a DH, bench bat, coach, or target field usher. I hear usher is really good job in retirement. The Twins don't need another Torii
  13. I would imagine a small consideration would be talent available at high A and still being able to hold on to the AAAA guys at AAA as well. My understanding is high A to AA is a big jump, so if there are several uber-prospects in AA all ready to make the jump to AAA, when might be impacted by when there's talent ready to backfill in high A and/or roster space at AAA.
  14. that must be the only reason TR resigned Duensing... To perpetuate trade rumors
  15. ditto, maybe I thought Berrios was knocking on the big league door a little louder than he actually was, but I figured as a result Moli would want a longer look at him.
  16. agreed, Mauer's productivity is based on OBP, it's just obp based more on hitting than walks, hence the BABIP statement. Mauer for the first time since Morneau pre concussion, has good power hitters batting behind him. No pitcher will give him as many free passes as he previously received. Mauer is a good player, even after his worst season as a pro, he's still one of the best players on the team, just more of a Wade Boggs than a Paul Konerko. As for Dozier, he does need to improve, BA is one of the areas, power comes and goes, but BA for a high strikeout guy can help bridge power gaps. I am just less worried about it because Dozier has shown more home run ability. Ask me again in September when Dozier has come back down to earth? I'll be calling for Polanco to take over at 2nd and call TR to question why he didn't sell Dozier high. I'm ok with being a hypocrite.
  17. i agree with Brock, not really turning on them...I think both deserve a shot at starting short stop, as well as Polanco. But this team has a lot of needs, and while depth is nice, having a starting CF is good too. I really like the concept of trying to package Escobar and Nolasco for a stop gap CF.
  18. To Thrylos' point - I'm much more worried about Mauer's batting average than Dozier's. It's all based on BABIP. If Dozier can continue his power stroke combined with high OBP, I'm ok with a bit lower BA because so many of Dozier's hits aren't in play relative to Mauer. On the other hand, Mauer's hitting is so predicated on singles and doubles, he's going to be challenged more, especially against teams like the Royals who are built for defense. Mauer needs a high batting average to maintain productivity.
  19. doesnt number of outs matter? Sure two outs is 100%, but what about no outs? What if the pitcher can't find the zone? I love to criticize Mauer as much as anyone for being passive, but that's also why I think he's a terrible 3-4-5 hitter. Bat him 2 and let him create RBI for Dozier-Arcia-Hunter-Plouffe.
  20. im with you, but just because it didn't work with Hicks doesn't mean it can't work with Rosario. However, if your going to give Rosario a shot, it needs to come with the mindset that Rosario's development comes first. Send him back to AA if he struggles too badly for too long.
  21. Thanks Lindsey - Really great perspective on the Twins situation from someone who's been there done that.
  22. id be ok with a Schafer/Robinson platoon. I hope Robinson finds a way on to this team as a late inning defensive sub. Outfield will be brutal again
  23. i too tend to lean in the challenge prospects camp, but in this case I also agree with Shane that Hicks was promoted too quickly, and worse than that, it wasn't corrected for any length of time. Maybe it was the right time to challenge him, but when he didn't rise to the occasion, send him to AAA for longer than a month, and sooner than a year and a half later. A month or two in AAA when your head is that screwy isn't enough, and it doesn't appear to be intact yet. I hope Hicks can be a productive big leaguer, but I don't think it will be the begininning of the 2015 season. Maybe a September 2015 call up?
  24. http://m.twins.mlb.com/news/article/112097980/minnesota-twins-outfielder-aaron-hicks-hicks-benched-after-losing-track-of-outs-on-bases Hicks already benched by Moli - here's hoping it works
