  1. it's higher than his 84 ops + last year. However a .714 ops for a starting left fielder isn't something I'm excited about.
  2. I was clamoring to see Parmelee early in the season, but with the extended look this season, we've seen more of the same in his prior short stints. I'm afraid with his options situation, TR has been painted into a corner again. Hammer coming off the books will help, but I don't see much in the way of help behind him.
  3. Interesting reading Dodgers fans reactions. Of course none of them pay attention to the Twins, so they don't quite understand the depths of the team around him. It seems to be a mix of frustration that he's perceived as a bad pitcher, frustration that he's not Lester, and happy about the trade because they are so pitching thin in the minors.
  4. I wish KC well. He was a valuable contributor to the Twins. By far the most stable and consistent starter over the two years. I'm also very happy for the youth movement to continue
  5. Agreed Goulik, I think Vargas is the top of the DH pecking order. And I'm not certain if it will be Hicks or Santana in CF. I think TR and Gardy will be less enthusiastic about Hicks' ST hitting dominance and leave him in AAA for a while. I do think during the season that Hicks will earn the CF job and Santana will take the SS job as a result. Santana has already earned his shot, but lack of CF options has made the case.
  6. http://blogs.twincities.com/twins/ Gardy's quote in the linked article says everything I wanted it to regarding Schafer, Hicks, and Santana. Kinda shocking really... Being open about finding fill ins and what they're looking for in each player.
  7. I don't have a problem with trading Fuld for a decent 4th/5th type starter and then backfilling him with the same kind of waiver wire pick up. It's fine, the team had a need and they filled it. However I agree with Chief, for a team that's supposed to have this fantastic farm system, how is it that there isn't somebody in house who could be ready? I understand that injuries have taken their toll, and Hicks needs some TLC in AAA before he is ready, but it doesn't inspire confidence that the Farm system is as good as it's reputed to be. I'd rather see this type of move than rushing a prospect to ride the big league pine, but I'd rather see some exciting prospects rather than cast offs. I'd rather see Santana at SS and a guy like Rosario or Buxton or Hicks in CF. Unfortunately Buxton/Rosario/Hicks isn't ready, so we see Santana make the best of it, and Jordan Schafer ride the pine.
  8. While I am in the camp that it's time for a change, I do take issue with a few things. 1) Gardy is not the GM. He may have sway with who comes and goes, he's not the decision maker. Former Twins All Stars might actually make a case for him to stay. As a coach and manager you pass knowledge and training on to players that accumulates over time. 2) Gardy's post season success indicates lack of depth of quality of top end pitching. Good hitting can only get you so far and there was a very steep decline in quality after Johan Santana to Brad Radke. Sure Radke was a work horse and one of the better pitchers in team history, but he was a marathoner, not a sprinter. Getting to the post season is a marathon, but winning it all is a sprint. To win the World Series you can't ride the Rick Reed express to glory. 3) I need more evidence of some secret agenda to deprive Twins Fans of World Series glory. I do firmly agree that a culture change is a necessity, and the manager is a big part of it. I'm not certain it's as easy plugging in a fresh face. Gardenhire has maintained an elite position and managed this team through an incredible run of success, albeit never as high as I thought it could have gone. Replacing Gardenhire means reducing that skill purposefully. It's just like going with the rookie short stop, there will be a steep learning curve.
  9. I would put Danny Santana on your players to watch list, and a reason to watch the Twins. As a rookie he's been the team's best hitter with an .807 ops. Out of necessity He has been playing CF, but I think most everyone involved wants him to end up at his natural position SS. What's exciting is he plays with passion, he's really fast, and came back from injury in a very ugly slump, but Gardy let him play through it, and he has recovered nicely. Gardy has described Santana as providing a spark, and you can see it when he plays.
  10. Great stuff Brock. Also fun to see your old Rocket Pig monicker on the thread.
  11. Your right Jim, but if we follow Shane's plan for the big leaguers, those posts would be back filled by talent acquired by trade.
  12. I hadn't heard it was Mauer's decision to move to first. At the time it was said that the team asked Mauer to move for health concerns.
  13. Exciting stuff on both fronts. Fingers crossed for health...
  14. Fantastic work. Great indicator of value in risk/reward, especially the tiered data sets.
  15. but he is consistent. He's consistently inconsistent. That's why he's a bad groundball pitcher. He has no idea where the ball is going. I would love it if he became the second coming of Brad Radke, but he's not Brad Radke. Do I want him to fail? No. Do I think he's going to be a viable starting pitcher? No.
  16. If May and Meyer are coming up, you need Darnell for insurance, unless you want Scott Diamond on the major league roster again.
  17. His xFIP in May is quite similar to his career. Tough April, but to be expected considering the changes he faced. He is who the Twins signed. That's how free agency works. He isn't going to be better this far in his career than his average over the whole 4 year contract.
  18. I agree with Stringer. His fielding is not good enough. High OBP predicated on the walk, with .198 BA says his BA should come up to Mendoza and his OBP should come down quite a bit. Why not challenge a .198 hitter? NL rule: Never ever walk the pitcher.
  19. I know they won't end at .500 but it's a heck of a lot better than watching the last few seasons
  20. The All-Star for the Twins should be Hughes or Dozier, but I think it will be Perkins. i was optimistic about the signing, and am further heartened by the start. I hope he can continue his duchess as the data suggests he could. Being in a larger park really did help his performance. Imagine what a real major league outfielding defense could do. Not a high bar, but he has been the Twins' best pitcher this season. Even with the rotation shaping up over the last 3 weeks or so, he has continued to be their best pitcher.
  21. I'm curious to see the counts on the heat map. My guess is the majority of the red blob down the heart of the plate comes at 0-0 and 3-0 figuring that he isn't going to swing, so make sure to get a strike. Good stuff Eric, thanks
  22. With Buxton's aggravation of his wrist injury, is there a new return to actin time table?
  23. He's hitting way better than Hicks, and he's been almost as good if not as good as Hicks in CF. That's more of an indictment of Hicks, but Santana has earned it too. As RiverBrian said, if you're making a super utility guy, commit. When Full/Arcia come back, send Hicks to AAA to learn to be a 4th outfielder without the pressure or pitching of the bigs.
