  1. As I understand it the Twins won't be making a run at Abreau. Tanaka, unlike Guerrero, fits a need, unfortunately it's the same need as most teams. Texas has bowed out, all the other big spenders are seemingly still in. It appears the Twins are going to take a shot, if our scouts return with good reports from Japan. I certainly hope we get him, but it won't be the end of the world if we don't.
  2. I agree the line-up is too ambitious for opening day, but I really liked it anyway. Go Twins!
  3. Very good job John! I don't think anyone can call this year a success, but once it's determined a rebuild is necessary, unless you have the financial wherewithal to attempt to spend your way out of it, you can't avoid a year like this, or last year for that matter. I figured out a massive rebuild was needed in April of 2012, and I'm very surprised with where they are right now. No organization ever wants to rebuild, but the alternative is endless mediocrity at best.
  4. I don't give up on great field/no hit SS with 502 PA. A team could contend with Florimon and who knows Santana maybe better. The NC State kid think 2 years, not 5-7.
  5. The biggest part of any mid-market rebuild is waiting for the top draft choices to mature. The Meyer and May trades helped, and the Butera and Morneau trades will yield small pieces. I'm guessing similar small pieces will be picked up this winter and/or next trade deadline. I still think Ryan will find a top starting pitcher somewhere, but I'm not uncertain he can't wait until the winter of 2014/2015. By then he may have the right pieces to trade.
  6. Take a look at the SS from North Carolina State. The point is Ryan has a much bigger and clearer picture than we do. Florimon and Santana will both remain at SS, Guerrero it's not as sure. You do realize the highest pro league in Cuba is equivalent to Class A+.
  7. I'm not saying you're wrong, but it came out after the draft the Twins had Stewart #2 on their board which would have been the highest ever for a high school pitcher. Also, as I've posted before, Jim Callis at BA has Stewart in the bigs sometime in 2015. I'm guessing Stewart and Eades are part of the rotation in 2016.
  8. Mike, lets just pretend Ryan bid 50M and won the prize. He already has Florimon and Santana and has a pretty good idea how they fit in. He also knows the 2014 draft is the deepest at SS in the past decade. It's always important to remember Ryan sees a much bigger picture than we do. If I were him, I would spend it on starting pitching and little else.
  9. Terry Ryan is 22 months into a 5 year rebuild. At 41 months it will make a lot more sense to everyone. Many on the board can already see it and the national media is picking it up. I think the last words I saw were "massive threat" in 2 or 3 years.
  10. How the Twins handle Deduno will actually be a pretty good indicator of how they will look at building the starting rotation for 2014. This is not a good time to be 30ish, a AAAA type etc., with any sort of arm problems. Going into the 2013 season, the rotation was in such shambles, they really had no place to start. Next year they can start with Correia, Gibson, Diamond/Albers and if he finishes strongly Pelfrey may even enter the conversation. The Twins are not going to ring the bell next season. Finding 5 healthy starters who can take the ball every five days and stopping the shuttle between Rochester and Target Field may well be enough for next season.
  11. Reestablishing trade value for Doumit and The Hammer are important parts of the Twins near future. I don't believe they have made the final decision on Pelfrey yet.
  12. Good report Bob. Nice to know Bard will probably start at Ft. Myers next season. With his pedigree, nice college career at a big time school, pre-draft ranking etc., I'm guessing we have a fast riser here.
  13. Great idea Shane!
  14. I'm starting to wonder if Correia can pass a drug test. I have to no idea how the rotation will fill out, but with Correia and Gibson as locks, we will certainly be in better position come spring training than last season.
  15. Mike, if the Twins scouts decide it's a go, I would like to take our best shots at both Abreu and Tanaka. I'm too lazy to go back and look, but IIRC the fun and games don't start until at least January. It's impossible to predict who will be successful, but I have little doubt the check book will be opened this winter. The past is not a perfect predictor of the future.
  16. Terry Ryan once again positioned us into a win-win situation. No trade, we retain one of our best players for an additional 30 days, trade and we obtain 2 players on the 40 man roster of one of the better organizations in baseball. I don't know how it can be explained much clearer than Seth's posts numbered 224 and 228. Continuing the "Twins are Cheap" mantra is not only lazy, it's silly.
  17. I always watch the starting pitching auditions this time of year. I can't help thinking back to Terry Ryan's first successful rebuild when my family got together and watched Kinney, Lohse, and Santana all pitch back to back.
  18. I don't disagree with you and hope the Twins resign Justin. I don't believe attendance will be a problem. Last time I looked we averaged 31,000 this year, which says a great deal about how loyal Twins fans are and I think about what a great place Target Field is to watch a ball game. I heard the doomsayers predict that Target Field is going to become a parking lot. Well it never happened and never will. Like many fans, I would prefer ownership just pull out the check book and forego the need to rebuild. Barring this, I like to watch the new players.
  19. I'm guessing the Pinto delay was a paperwork thing, I know we don't have 40 good players. As I have previously posted, it's very unlikely a team with Buxton and Sano will ever lose 90 games. I'm sorry to hear you are losing interest in our beloved Twins. IIRC you have posted favorably about the Cubs and Marlins. I don't follow either of those teams, but at a quick glance it doesn't appear either of those teams are rebuilding.
  20. Alex, I apologize to you, but I have no clue how to respond. I know you're a good Twins fan so let's leave it that. Go Twins!
  21. That's actually a pretty good comparison. Made me laugh.
  22. I completely agree and was very surprised when he said it. Regardless, I've been a disciple of his years and I listen to whatever he says very carefully.
  23. Let me add several thoughts on future starting pitchers. I agree with Stewart, Meyer, and Gibson. I would go with Eades and our first college starter drafted in 2014 also. I would include Berrios as the next up and Wimmers as a dark horse. Jim Callis at BA has May as a reliever, and I believe everything he says. Eades was the #2 starter at LSU for 2 years and is a hard thrower. I really like pitchers from top college programs and no college program is better than LSU. The 2014 draft is much stronger than the past 2. If the BPA to the Twins is a college starter, he should be available by 2016. Once again rikker49, great idea for a blog. I can't get myself to even think about what our starting rotation will look like in 2014. I'm hoping our scouts really like Tanaka in Japan, we have 100M, and everyone else is out of money. Go Twins!
  24. I believe the Twins are similar to more teams than they are dissimilar to. I agree the Twins have the need and money to sign a rotation upgrade. My post was meant to address Gonzalez only and I apologize if I didn't make that clear.
  25. If he wins the job in spring training, he wins the job. I agree with the other poster, if he hits .230 with his power we're good to go. I believe Seth posted some time ago, his defense is somewhat better than Plouffe's. If he is ready, there is nothing to wait for.
