Another disappointing decision by the front office. Sands is just not that good. He had a decent season a couple years ago, but he hasn't been good at any other point. I'd much rather see what Anderson can do for us.

Boston surging definitely impacts the deadline. I was hoping a trade could have been made with them for Sonny Gray and Aroldis Chapman to cover our need for a starter and shutdown closer. It seems they're no longer an option. Back to the drawing board, I guess. If Tom Pohlad is to be believed, staying the course would be my response. Keep Jeffers. Keep Ryan. Go for a spot in the playoffs. Obviously cant have 3 catchers. Im trading Caratini. He was instrumental in helping keep us afloat while Jeffers was out, but Jeffers is a far superior player. Im keeping Alex Jackson as the backup. He has done very well with his opportunity. Im trading Josh Bell. He has no defensive home and contract is up at the end of the year. No future with the team. At that point, I'm moving Larnach to DH. That clears an OF spot for a prospect. Im trading Royce Lewis. He needs a Change of scenery. Its been 3 years since hes done anything. Its selling low, but hes just not getting it done. That clears a spot to acquire a huge bat. 1B is usually one of the easiest spots to fill at the deadline. Lee stays at 3B. Kriedler holds down SS. I'd like to see Clemens at 2B. Big Bat trade acquisition at 1b. Jeffers stays at C. Buck in CF. Keaschall in an OF spot and a young guy in the other OF spot. (Roden, Jenkins, Erod, etc.) I would find a top end starter in a trade somewhere. Ryan, Taj, Top End Starter. Round out the rotation with 2 of Ober, Prielipp, and Zebby. That should get us to the playoffs and a good top 3 for getting it done in the playoffs. Id also find a proven Closer. Not a guy with an ERA in the 4s that was good a couple years ago. I mean a current lock down starter that will get it done in the playoffs. Gomez and Morris are both doing well. Nance seems like he can stick. Those would be my moves. Im sending out 3 players from the ML roster and trading for 3. We have plenty of prospects to get this done. A logjam of OFs in AAA. Id like to find another decent set up guy too but I think we might be able to get by with just 1 great closer acquisition.

Anyone else annoyed at the timing of Prielipp being pulled? Let him finish the inning. I understand hes on a limit but he was dealing and looking darn good. That decision cost us 6 runs and completely undermined the dominating start from Prielipp. And why does Sands automatically get a spot on the roster while a guy with an ERA under 3 gets sent out? Because he had 1 decent season 2 year ago? Dude is overrated. I do understand why he was put in the game in that spot. It Should've been a low leverage spot but he completely imploded. Nance and Funderburk are looking decent at the moment. Adams was on a nice run before today. Hopefully just a hiccup and not the start of something bad. I am fully over Royce Lewis at this point. Why is he ever batting cleanup? .208 average for the season and his numbers are even worse over the past couple weeks or so. Its been 3 years since hes done anything. Its well past time to let go. Is Buck ok? He has been struggling pretty bad for a couple weeks. I hope that hip isn't holding him back still. If it is, he needs to let that heal up. Clemens with 2 triples today. What a difficult feat. Kriedler with 3 doubles and 2 stolen bases. He and Clemens have been stepping up on both sides of the ball. 3 hits and 3 RBIs for Jeffers, showing hes healthy. I sure hope we keep him. Probably a top 5 Catcher in the league. We need to keep guys like him. A's were kicking the ball all over the field today. Very nice to see the team take advantage of those opportunities. On a side note, I wasnt too pleased to see Arcia released from AAA so Gray could have a roster spot. Arcia is a better player in a every aspect of the game. It was a puzzling decision for sure and I just cant understand why the team has been sticking with him so much. He kept getting starts in the ML over better players and now hes taking a AAA roster spot over a better player.

Thank you! As a fan, I have been in disbelief with so many writers and comments on this page clamoring to trade our best players. Absolutely not. We are trying to win. Once you're in the playoffs, anything can happen. There is a 0% chance I'd be in favor of trading Jeffers or Ryan. Those are 2 elite players in this league. I dont care what the return would be. If they were traded, they would need to be replaced. KEEP THEM! Give Jeffers the QO. Try to extend them both. Lackey and Tait are VERY nice C prospects, but there are no guarantees. Now, I am in favor of possibly moving players that wouldn't be a part of the future. Like Bell. If he is traded, move Larnach to DH and clear a spot in the OF for one of the many high end prospects waiting in AAA. Moving guys that have underperformed for 3 years like Royce. Possibly even Martin. But there is no chance I'd be in favor of trading our stars.

Marek Houston sure does look ready for AAA. How long can Kendle keep up an OPS over 1.000? Both of these guys are mashing AA right now.

What an awful article. Terrible premise. The fan base would, and should, rebel even more than we have if anything even close to this happens for the reason of saving money.

This is exactly why you keep Jeffers and trade Caratini. Then you dont need to trade for a rental bat. Jeffers is better than all those listed.

Insane timing for this article. Just last night I commented that its time for Royce to be traded. Hes just not getting it done. His OPS the last 30 days is only .671. His defense is probably OK if hes mashing but he just isn't. Its been 3 years. Change of scenery IMO. A .671 OPS and maybe average defense at 1B is not how this team will win anything in the playoffs.

People all over this site had a huge issue with Clemens when he was starting at 1B but his numbers showed defense near GG levels and his OPS has been flirting with .800 most of the year. As far as im aware, his defense has always been good. It was the bat. If his bat keeps up like it has been so far, I could see him as a starter.

I dont really know which prospects I'd trade. There are some on the ML roster I would move/make available. I would trade Bell and move Larnach to DH against RH pitching. Opening up an OF spot for one of the many waiting AAA guys. Also opens up DH days against LH pitching. Royce Lewis can be traded. Change of scenery IMO. Trading for a quality 1B at the deadline is usually fairly simple. Im trading Caratini and keeping Jeffers. The drop-off from Jeffers to Caratini is immense. Alex Jackson is a nice backup. Giving Jeffers the QO in the likely event we cant extend him. Austin Martin is available. Buxton stays in CF. Keaschall keeps an OF spot. Lee stays at 3B. Kriedler/Culpepper at SS. Clemens at 2B. Trade for 1B. Jeffers at C Obviously need pitching help. There are a few trades that can be made to help the team now and clear roster spots for some AAA guys.

Last year's trade deadline was mostly understandable up until Louis Varland. Hated the trade when it happened and hate it ever more now. Jax trade. Love it. So glad hes no longer on the team. Duran trade. Not a fan of the return, bit I understand why the trade was made. Correa was a cancer. He needed to go. Outman for an injured reliever. Terrible return but no longer our problem. Paddack trade. Im surprised we got anything. Kudos This deadline should hopefully be better. We have prospects that can be traded to strengthen our team. Tait comes to mind after drafting Lackey. Tons of AAA OFers. It can be done.

If Tom Pohlad meant what he said about competing, trading Joe Ryan would be the opposite of that. If you trade Ryan, you would then need to find another player just like Joe Ryan. Same can be said for Jeffers. This Twins team has some legitimate stars. Joe Ryan would be the top pitcher available. Jeffers would be the top catcher available. Buxton, though not being traded, would be the top CF available. Ryan is a top 20 pitcher in MLB. Jeffers is probably a top 5 catcher in the league. These are not players a team with championship aspirations gets rid of. These are players you extend and build around.

Zyhir Hope is a very solid prospect, but we already have too many Lefty OFers. He would be great to add to an outfield with Jenkins and Buxton. Just too many other OF prospects waiting for a turn. Eyanson has good numbers, too. Not interested in any of the others as headliners in a deal. TBH, my preference would be to keep Jeffers and hit him with the qualifying offer for next season if we arent able to extend him. I think It would be difficult for him to reject that kind of payday. I would be trading Caratini. Keeping Alex Jackson. Jeffers and Jackson would be my preference for catcher the rest of this season and next year. Jeffers would get his desired workload and Jackson can give him a rest once a week or whatever is needed.

Absolutely not. Houston should be as untouchable as Jenkins IMO. He has elite defense and his bat has played at every level so far. Add to that hes moving up the ranks fairly fast, already at AA and should be at AAA as soon as Culpepper is called up. I'd also need a lot more than that to even think about trading Quick. Let alone adding more to a deal. These all seem like nightmare scenarios for a Twins fan. Scenario 1: MASSIVELY overpay for a struggling rental starter and 1 year of a reliever. Scenario 2: MASSIVELY overpay for a SS on the decline by trading away our future SS that could easily debut next season, plus ERod and more? 🙄 by far worst proposal of them all. Scenario 3: Overpay for a 1B, which we have plenty of options for already on the roster, for a guy as inconsistent as Royce Lewis to replace Lewis? While At 1B this season, Kody Clemens was performing at a GG level defensively and has flirted with an ,800 OPS most of the year. Internal fix right there. Some of the worst nightmare scenarios I've seen in writing yet.

Yes do it. Extend him and Ryan. Then sign or acquire 1 more top end starter. My preference for a starting rotation is to have atleast a 3 headed monster to have for the playoffs. I like what Ryan and Taj bring with their work ethic. If we can find another high end starter like a Sonny Gray (probably not specifically him since Boston is in a WC spot now) but a guy like him. ERA in the 2s. That leaves 2 spots for the younger guys or guys coming back from injury like Pablo and we dont know how he'll perform.

Wait. So we could potentially get the best closer in baseball and they'd throw in Xander Boegarts if we give them less in trade? Sign me up! Xander is worth 1.3 WAR already this season with a down year on offense. He's not happy in SD and it shows in his play. Get him out of there and see if the team environment here suits him better. If he can get back to even close to who he was before signing in SD, $25M a year would be a steal. Admittedly, he could make things go the other way and completely sour the locker room. But man when hes playing right, hes fun to watch. He'd lock up SS or 2B for a while, too.

If Sonny Gray is available from Boston, while you're on the phone, get Aroldis Chapman in the deal, too. We'd have a top 3 in the rotation for a potential trip to the playoffs and a closer with a proven track record of success.

The team needs to figure out what they have. Buxton isnt going anywhere, nor should he. He's expressed a desire to wear 1 jersey his entire career and he's earned it. It would be a huge mistake to ever part with him. Keaschall, in a very short sample, looks to have found his defensive home in the outfield and his bat plays there. It seems very unlikely he's going anywhere. That leaves 1 spot for upwards of 4 prospects. You can hold them in AAA only so long. Yes, injuries have cost ERod a lot of time, but when healthy, he has nothing left to prove at AAA. Roden is already up getting a chance. Mendez also has very little, if anything to prove in St Paul. Then there's Jenkins, who could realistically be called up at any point now. Not to mention Fedko, who really didn't get much of a chance, he also has very little if anything to prove in the minors. And there's also Wallner down in St Paul. He technically still playing RF, even though his best position is DH. If he's rediscovered his swing, hes shown the ability to be a high end bat already. Not Necessarily OFers but we have Sabato and Gonzalez ready, too. These guys are just getting older while they wait for a chance.
