    Yeah, but remember, MLB is an entertainment business--think Bill Veeck and Charlie Finley. It doesn't have to be about maturity, just putting butts in seats for the show!

    I might not pay attention at all if they do that. C'mon, you'd have to take a look for curiosity's sake, if nothing else! We're in uncharted territory already--why not the moment when, "Just when everyone thought it was safe to return to the ballpark, but ... HE'S BACK!"

    Sorry (not sorry) to keep mentioning it, but this looks like a team ready for Doug Mientkiewicz. Even if you hate him, he'd be better than Rocco, the team would be more fun to watch, and outside of the improvement, we'd never know the difference (to quote Groucho).

    That's hard to imagine. If someone out there wants a Triple A team, they can just buy a Triple A, not try to transform an MLB team into one.

    I think it's what it looks like: owners who no longer are interested in the team and are trying to squeeze as much money out of it before it (I hope) sells. And unless that sale happens soon, look for more of the same over the winter.

    Excellent eulogy for the end of an era. Regardless of whether there’s a new owner or if the Pohlads are still around, the Twins will be a very different team next year. And next year starts today.

    Or he’s doing exactly what he was told. Usually when a business sells, it’s the buyer that strips its assets, not the seller. Gonna be a long August and September.

    I dunno, in a free market a commodity is worth whatever someone is willing to pay. It wasn’t like no one knew he was going to be iffy—two teams had withdrawn their offers after seeing the results of his physicals. The Twins made him an offer anyway. Correa would have been a fool not to accept it.

    You’re right, they can, but they won’t. I have no idea how things line up today, but when Carl Pohlad bought the Twins, his personal wealth was said to be greater than George Steinbrenner’s. The difference was Steinbrenner wanted to win and Pohlad just wanted to make a profit. So yeah, they’ll foot the bill for one superstar, as long as they keep the rest of the payroll nice and compact. But why bother if keeping him doesn’t even get you a .500 ball club or into the playoffs? Send the guy someplace he can finish his career with a winning team.

    I know there are a lot of folks who hate him, but I’d still like to see Doug Mientkiewicz replace Rocco. At least we’d see some emotion and some interesting baseball.

    Like I said elsewhere, I would have been happy to see Harrison Bader stick around for some of the that money. But they won’t find anyone if they don’t start shopping. Now they at least can look.

    Then it’s lucky that I said, “young, durable, and controllable everyday position players.” On the other hand, I’d have been happy if they’d have hung onto Harrison Bader—$10M would have covered his contract for next year.

    Even if he were playing at the level he was being paid, he wasn’t going to single-handedly carry the Twins to a championship or even into the playoffs this year. The Twins can’t afford to be paying superstar money to a guy whose consistency and durability have been in question since day one. So maybe whatever they can recoup of his salary will be enough to hire two or three young, durable, and controllable everyday position players next year

    That’s on the FO and ownership, not Correa. It’s not like there’s a salary cap the organization is butted up against…except their self-imposed one. Absolutely on the front office and ownership. Correa did the best he could, when he could, but he was never worth to the team what they were paying him. So I’m glad the Twins and Astros were able to come to terms.

    He’s managed to do well enough for himself a couple of times, but whatever difference that’s made, it hasn’t been enough to keep the team even in the playoffs, but for a single year. The whole idea of paying one guy a superstar salary, then filling so many other slots with cheap free agents, retreads, and reclamation projects never has set well with me.

    …on a player who’s performance hasn’t lived up to his contract. Twins took a chance on Correa being a big difference-maker. Unfortunately, he hasn’t been.

    It’s inevitable. But if the Twins can’t get that performance out of him, then send him on his way.

    Agree, and don’t care if that’s the case. Either way, the Twins won’t be getting that performance out of him.
