  1. Well I became hooked as a twins fan when they did win 2 world series, as a child. Just because the Twins haven't won since, doesn't mean it doesn't matter if they win or not.
  2. But in this case, baseball is a business, and the game is a product. It DOES matter if you win or lose. This is like a restaurant saying it doesn't matter if my steak is cooked properly, as long as the chef had fun cooking it. I'm not saying these guys have to go home and kick the dog if they lose, but at the same time, these guys making tens of millions of dollars don't get to pretend it's the same thing as kids playing a pick up game at the park.
  3. They were 3-6 last year, and playing their third string QB, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. The Gophers were expected to be mediocre, and yet were 15 point favorites. EDIT: They were coming off a 28 point loss to powerhouse Central Florida, and were down another QB since. They aren't just bad, they are awful. And they rolled over us. Hopefully this is rock bottom, and a wake up call to the players and coaches that the game isn't played with nonsense cliches and catchphrases.
  4. I think his point is that if he's ready to play he should be in the lineup, not on the bench. I agree. I don't care if he hasn't seen live pitching in a decade, if he's healthy I want him in the lineup.
  5. You have to think Maryland on a third string QB is going to be the easiest Big10 opponent on the schedule, right? Forget .500, I'd be searching for a conference win.
  6. And this is why I hate scheduling cupcakes in non conference. Those games should NOT count towards bowl eligibility- that would discourage teams from scheduling them. You get a false (and meaningless) sense of their abilities. This defense is getting shredded by a team that was mediocre at best, before they were down to their third string QB. It also is terrible at preparing a team for conference play. They suddenly find themselves playing against a team that actually is capable of beating them after playing zero competition all nonconference season. The rules need to change, because as they stand now I totally get why a mediocre team is tempted to get 3 or 4 free wins towards a bowl berth.
  7. A 6 at bat sample size has no meaning whatsoever. That's actually a check in the "pro" column for me, that Molitor is not looking at silly 6 AB sample size batter vs pitcher stats like Gardy did.
  8. Yeah Rogers doesn't belong in a really good bullpen, unless it's a mop up guy. If you squint really hard, he's maybe average at best. Which sounds good at first, but the few teams with elite bullpens don't give meaningful innings to average at best guys.
  9. Congratulations to Jose and his wife! But 3 by age 23? It's not a race Jose!
  10. Well it's always better to win than lose, of course. But so far they've yet to play anything resembling a real football team. Hopefully once the remaining Kill/Claeys commitments are cleared, we'll actually see them schedule a game or two that has at least a small chance of losing. I'm not saying I expect Alabama and USC on the schedule every year, but the Kill/Claeys era nonconference games have been pathetic.
  11. Rosario has a .220 higher OPS for his career at Target Field, and .300 higher this year. Target Field isn't hurting his numbers at all, in fact he's pretty bad everywhere else.
  12. Yarn cited 6/1 through 8/17, not through current. The reason being, and I agree with him, is that people are trying to say that since his COMBINED numbers are good from June 1, that means he's turned it around from June 1 onward. In actuality, he was still pretty bad from June 1 to mid August, and THEN has been really good since.
  13. Kyle Gibson didn't qualify last year, and likely won't this year either. When I said qualifier, I meant drv's criteria of 250ip the last 2 years.
  14. It's not 77th best in baseball though. It's 77th out of only 87 that meet the qualifier. That's the bottom 11%.
  15. Another thing that seems logical, but do we have any imperical evidence? Are there any studies showing that players are worse if they play more games?
  16. WAR is a counting stat, so any above average starting pitcher who stays healthy for the full season is likely going to crack the top 30 in WAR for that individual season. That may make them one of the 30 "most valuable" pitchers that year, but is that the same as actually being one of the 30 best? Maybe it does, I'm just thinking out loud. If Pedro misses 15 starts, and his counting stats suffer, he's still one of the best in baseball, IMO, despite fWAR disagreeing. (That's just a hypothetical BTW. Then again, staying healthy is a valuable skill, so we should credit that. I'm not sure, but yeah Radke was really good, and underrated.
  17. Is "post season tested" even a thing that matters? I don't know. I have a feeling it is one of those things that sounds logical so everyone just goes with it. Do we have any evidence that teams with more playoff experience perform better, compared to their skill level, than teams without? If we do have statistical, not anecdotal, evidence of that, I'd love to read it.
  18. Ha, no, my name is a reference to the great Herb Brooks.
  19. Can someone explain the Smith/Brooks usage? To my untrained eye, Brooks looks like the vastly superior runner, but they just keep giving it to Smith over and over instead of Brooks. What am I missing here?
  20. With just a 50% success rate, may I ask what possible upside there is in that strategy?
  21. He's (Palka) got a .759 OPS, in AAA as a corner OF'er who turns 26 next month. He has no business on the mlb roster during a playoff push, and I have to imagine he'll be removed from the 40 man during the off-season. His upside looks like career AAAA player at this point.
  22. Why are you tolerant of Rosario trying to steal? Is it because he has decent speed so he must automatically be able to steal? He's 8/16 on the season. Those 8 caught stealing, BTW, lead all of baseball! And for his career he's 24/40, just awful. Him trying to steal, not once but twice, against Perez, is inexcusable.
  23. Also, Boshers is not a specialist. He SHOULD be, but unfortunately he's not used that way.
  24. No, it's not his fault, but the fact remains regardless. So long as they are keeping Molitor, they can't have a straight LOOGY on roster, because Molitor won't use him properly.
  25. That'd be great if he was used as a LOOGY, but he's not. Career. 803 OPS against RH hitters, whom he's faced 50% more than LH hitters this year.
