  1. 1) It's not the NFL, pro baseball players don't put their bodies through that much. There are jobs out there like mining and commercial fishing, and logging and some types of construction that are about 100 fold more physically strenuous than baseball. And those guys all make less than 70k per year. 2) Maybe, and I can listen to that, but again he wasn't hurt, he was tired, and isn't going on the DL. 3) You'd have to explain how he could possibly hurt the team more than the bullpen? That's not hindsight either, we've all seen this unit. 4) Players have to be aware of situations. The bullpen was overworked. If the bullpen is fully rested and competent, it's probably not an issue. 5) Guys like Jack Morris, Bert Blyleven, Nolan Ryan, etc., would they have asked out of a 2-1 game because of fatigue? No chance, you'd have to drag them from the mound. They all had long, mostly healthy productive careers.
  2. Yes I'm aware, I get them occasionally, it comes with the territory in my profession. Go through my posting history, I'll bet cash you won't find a single post before this thread where I question Buxton's injuries or potential or even performance. In fact I've probably wasted more time than its worth vigorously defending him in ALL of them. Yes they are painful, but if it's debilitating pain for a week, at that age? That points to a much, much more serious issue, IMO or a questionable pain tolerance. Maybe it's the team being over cautious and forcing him to sit out, ok maybe, but that would surprise me given their early statement that it would only be a day or two. To be honest it is a little insulting that people shout down at you if you ask a legitimate question regarding a players ability to play through pain. Disagreement is one thing, sarcastic or insulting comments are unnecessary. Edit: To be clear mike, I'm not referring to your post in that last paragraph, I probably should have quoted one of the others.
  3. I don't think it's unfair at all. I don't know if he's tough or not, but when he asks out of a 2-1 game with only 75 pitches, and an already over worked and underperforming bullpen, not because he's hurt, but rather just tired, I'd say at that point it's fair to question it. Especially when he's being paid workhorse money. Unless you are of the opinion that there is nothing a player can say or do that makes it fair to question their toughness?
  4. I just want to say this entire post is full of excellence, in case anyone just skimmed past it they should really go back and read it.
  5. Nope. Missing a week for back spasms is incredible. It's something to be concerned about, that's not normal, and I stand by my comments.
  6. This is going on 7 days now, with back spasms??? Holy cow, I've always defended his injuries as fluky but maybe this kid is incredibly soft.
  7. I've thought since the start of the season that Max should be up and starting every game. Unfortunately Mollie has no time for rookies.
  8. Some sharp criticism of Hughes from Brian Murphy. http://www.twincities.com/2016/05/18/brian-murphy-twins-phil-hughes-needs-to-either-pitch-or-rest/ Hughes actually said out loud, “It’s not so much the pitches than it is the innings. It’s getting up and down that many times is when fatigue starts to set in on it.” It must be exhausting standing up, moving down the bench, grabbing water, taking off a jacket and walking to and from the mound every five days. If Hughes’ words do not infuriate fans or make teammates bug-eyed angry, then everybody gets the flaccid team they deserve. Call it bilateral compete weakness. Hughes is supposed to be a horse. The Twins handsomely rewarded him with a massive contract extension in 2014 following his 16-win season. He is 12-15 in 198 innings over 33 subsequent starts. “It’s not like I can just go out there and grind through,” he said. Jack Morris’ head just exploded.
  9. That's illegal in North Carolina, I believe.
  10. Oh there is no doubt that everyone shares some blame.
  11. So all 30 teams pay a hitting coach for no reason but charity? Quite generous.
  12. I'll eat my hat if Mauer walks away from 46 million. I don't care if he had a trillion dollars and converted to Buddhism, people don't walk away from that kind of money. And the Pohlad's aren't going to give him 46 million to retire. We are stuck with him.
  13. Not necessarily true. Define few: (Merriam Webster) 1 : consisting of or amounting to only a small number <one of our few pleasures> 2 : at least some but indeterminately small in number
  14. Yeah, I'd go as far as saying it would be impossible for learning a new position on the fly to NOT affect a young players hitting.
  15. I'm not sure that is true. I seem to recall Rosario getting praised for smart plays plenty of times last year, on these forums.
  16. That stuff is true. My issue is why do the veterans seem to get a free pass on this stuff?
  17. I don't really know why everyone keeps ragging on Sano. He has no business playing RF, and has for the most part delivered with the bat since day 1, aside from a early slump this year.
  18. I think it tells us that pro baseball is really hard.
  19. It's a 4 game series. Im going way over 10.
  20. In addition to the MVP and Cy Young, they also had that years batting champ (Mauer), a top 3 closer ( Nathan), and a gold glove CF'er in his prime (Hunter). And we still got swept by the mediocre A's. Embarrassing. And the Twins defenders will say our lack of post season success is because we always ran into better teams with superior payrolls. Not true!
  21. Lol, Mauer is not walking away from 46 million dollars, nor should he. Also, future health? There are literally hundreds of jobs more dangerous than baseball.
  22. How many years is this slump going to last?
  23. If the score is still close enough that you are doing a defensive shift, then it's close enough to steal the open base, period.
