  1. Because it's above replacement, not in a vacuum. A replacement level SS is going to give you a lot less offensive production than a replacement level 1B. Consider a guy like Kennys Vargas. Would he still be a fringe player if he was a legit SS, or catcher, rather than 1B/DH?
  2. Ok, I was going off memory. But, I looked, and you're right, their ERA+ during their peaks are closer than I thought.
  3. I mean SOMEWHERE. If he's that good, that he deserves to be hitting at the top of a lineup, then he should be a centerpiece in a trade. Personally, I have my doubts that he can hit anywhere near that level.
  4. I assume Darvish is one of your two sure to be overpaid FA's, who is the other one?
  5. What's the argument that peak Johan was better than peak Koufax?
  6. If Granite is a good enough hitter to bat at the top of a lineup, shouldn't he be starting somewhere?
  7. Haven't you heard? The accusers were all paid for by George Soros. That's what the voters are sticking to, anyway.
  8. I never argued that he shouldn't be brought back. But he's going to be an 86-90 ERA+ guy. You can attach all the disclaimers you want to his age, he's still 30 years old. Mileage on his arm has nothing to do with my point. I'm not worried he'll get hurt. Point me to the long list of guys that drastically improve at that age, sustainably, and perhaps I'd be swayed. Either way he's getting a shot. Getting 2 arms pushes Mejia down to AAA. We'll check his numbers after next year, and see if he's turned a corner. I'm confident in my prediction.
  9. All that does is keep open a window of mediocrity, IMO. This is not a team that is a couple of good role players away. They lack superstars, and superstars aren't available in free agency. They are only available by picking top 2 or 3 in drafts. (I'm aware there are probably a few outliers found later in the draft. )
  10. 1) I don't think it's pessimistic to expect exactly what he's already consistently shown himself to be. I'm not predicting he'll be worse. 2) Every year I read about how he's figured it out now. Snapshots of a particular up or down, at this stage of a player's career, is far more likely to just be a normal up or down, than some kind of new trend. 3) He's already a serviceable back end starter. I was responding to a poster suggesting that he'll suddenly become league average or better. By definition that'd make him an average #3 starter. 4) Is it common for 30+ year olds to make sustainable adjustments that make them drastically better than their career standard? Because that's how much better he'd have to be. Drastically. I'd assume you could find a few outliers, but I'd also assume that it's extremely rare. Perhaps if he was 26 or 27, I'd be a bit more optimistic than I am at 30 years old.
  11. He should have been fired immediately after last year's bizzare season ending press conference, where he practically acted shocked that there wasn't a victory parade for a pathetic first round exit.
  12. I said after last season that it was time for full tear down and rebuild, and was of course mocked and ridiculed. You trade any and every piece you can. Equal value doesn't matter. The most important step is becoming bad enough to get a few top 3 picks. This is a league dominated by superstars, of which the Wild have none. Suter's contract might still be moveable. Parise's obviously would not be. Try a new window in 5 years.
  13. I have no idea what he's like. But, allegedly, one of the questions on the questionnaire was literally , "do you like me?". I hope that's just a weird lost in translation things, because otherwise that's a bit of a red flag.
  14. He had a 4.46 FIP last year, and is now a year older, and well into the age range where athletes stop being good. I am indeed predicting a very big regression.
  15. Well we are clearly way off each other in our evaluations of what 2018 is going to look like for Santana if you're only counting that many guys as better than him. I'll be happily surprised if he's league average.
  16. I hope you're right about Santana. I don't share the faith.
  17. Kyle Gibson has consistently shown he's 12% below league average through his prime years. He's suddenly going to become league average or better in his age 31 season? I honestly don't understand this yearly optimism with Gibson.
  18. Well yeah, that's the goal isn't it? If the point isn't to do whatever it takes to field "a really good baseball team", then what are these guys even here for?
  19. I think you are not giving him enough credit as a pitcher. Getting him would be a jackpot. If it takes 50 games of a guy barely cracking .600 OPS to get him, oh well, I'll take it. Look at it this way, he'll be conservatively a 4+ WAR player, more likely (IMO), a 6+ WAR player. Even if his bat is putrid for 50 games, it'll likely only subtract 1 WAR at worst, likely less. No brainer, IMO.
  20. You're probably right that they won't, but I don't think it's much to ask. I don't expect Santana to be better than league average in 2018, and fear he could be significantly worse. They'll need 2 more better than what he'll be, at a minimum, IMO.
  21. For the record, I could care less about the record. For me it's players looking like they've never even played football before, his lack of addressing the most important position, and the absurd gobbledygook that comes out of his mouth.
  22. Ruesse is the only one not falling head over heels for his shtick, as far as local media goes. Well, Common Man too, if you consider him media.
  23. Well there isn't much competition in the Conference he was in before. And he had 1 awful year, 2 mediocre years, then 1 good year which ended in a loss when they had to play a Big10 team in their bowl, so it's not like he built a dynasty, or a sustained run of sucess. Sometimes a first date is enough to know it's never going to work. I don't need to see 3 years, though no disrespect to anyone who does.
  24. Either that or Twitter has a max number of characters.
  25. Another coach would have at least tried, instead of essentially taking a knee for 3 quarters, trying to keep the final score within 50. What message does that send the players? "When things get tough, we quit." You guys can take as much time as you like, I don't need to. He's in way over his head, and has zero substance, which is why he needs his shtick.
