  1. Agree except for the MI part. It has to be a pitcher or a SS, not a 2B.
  2. Fair point about needing to see Ryan actually perform that endgame FA pickup, I agree he hasn't done much in that vein in the past. But just because he might not get that part right doesn't mean things suddenly change at this point in the rebuild process. It is still probably only appropriate to overspend when that move puts you over the top. Throwing money away now is still a bad move. No, I don't think Smith sat down and said "Hmmm, this Ramos trade is just awful and will kill us down the road, but I think I'll do it anyway." However, I think if you want something bad enough and you are impatient enough, it can be very easy to talk yourself into an unwise course of action. I've purchased many things that I had to talk pretty fast to justify to my wife and even myself. Then three weeks later comes the buyers remorse.
  3. For what it's worth, I put very little stock in the notion that we had to overpay to "lure" free agents here. I simply think that Ryan assessed and assigned a value to each free agent and wouldn't offer them any more than that. End of story. The market appeared to be very kind to some marginally top-end pitchers last offseason. Overpaying is overpaying, and is usually an incorrect decision. I won't make any excuses for this because it doesn't need any excuses. He is doing is job, making (or trying to) good value decisions and not hurting us 3-4 years down the road when we expect to be really good again. And if you look at the crop of last year's free agent pitchers people thought we should go after (there is an ongoing list in another thread) it certainly looks like a lot of teams overpayed and that Ryan's evaluations of worth were proven correct. You say what was needed, but that is a very unclear sentiment.
  4. I honestly think other GMs will too often make a decision they know is "incorrect" in order to get what they want done. The Ramos trade comes to mind, in my opinion one of the worst the Twins have made in a decade. Ryan would never have made that trade because it simply was bad AND didn't have the benefit of putting us over the top talent-wise. Perhaps Smith thought he was the piece that would bring a championship, but if so I'd vehemently disagree with that assessment. More likely he simply wanted a good reliever and far too easily made the call to way overpay for one. Sure, there is a very real element of risk/reward in every move, and I do think there is a time when overpaying becomes the "correct" decision. But not last offseason, and in my mind not unless you are sure it will bring you the piece(es) that make you a strong contender. And even then you are still mortgaging a part of your future, the short term benefits simply outweigh the long term detriments (you hope).
  5. Money well spent is money well spent. Why would Ryan spend money on free agents last offseason that he didn't think were worth what they were asking/getting? You build a franchise powerhouse not by spending money like water or simply because it's there, but by making good decision after good decision. Whether the payroll is there or not is irrelevant. Disagree with his assessment of worth and value if you want (I do on occasion) but at least give the guy credit for trying to make every decision a good one. You can't say the same for Bill Smith, or for many, many other GMs for that matter.
  6. Thank you for confirming that no matter what Gardy says or does, there will always be fans on here who will stake him out over the coals and roast him alive for absolutely no reason. Maybe all the TD critics should get together and write his press copy for him? Or have him text you all from the dugout to ask if he should leave his pitcher in another inning? That might at least save you all some time writing and the rest of us reading.
  7. Colabello can be a pretty awesome DH if he can get even close to those AAA hitting numbers. Not sure he is a good option anywhere besides 1st base, though, and I think we need that spot for Morny/Parm/Sano/Mauer. I for one think he will hit for some power and average at the MLB level and either fit into our future DH/1B plans or net a fair prospect at the deadline/offseason. I don't think there is a precedent for a player who is that overwhelmingly dominant in AAA (.354, 40+ HR pace) not producing at at least a fair clip (.300, 25 HR, 75 RBI) in the majors, but I could be wrong. Congrats to you Chris, and GL.
  8. Did not think we'd have a 5 spot on CC by the 3rd inning. This feels good.
  9. Come on Chief. Look at all the 100M+ contracts given out to pitchers over the last 5-10 years and I would be willing to bet that there is more regret than value. Not saying the Twins shouldn't try to identify a top-tier guy to go after, but it has to be done intelligently and is heavy with risk regardless.
  10. Plouffe had a month and a half just last year that was far better than Dunn's last nice stretch.
  11. I liked for the Adam Dunn comment alone. Would be really nice to win a series against the &^#*@# Yankees going into the break. That's the type of finish that could give us some life to start the second half.
  12. Yeah, nothing to worry about at all. He's walking a ton, which likely means both that he's seeing the ball well and that pitchers are being very careful around him. Seeing another 80-100 ABs worth of pitches will do wonders for his comfort level.
  13. That assessment seems accurate to me. I just feel they average out to...average, stats be damned. We are agreed that once he refines his craft he will be well above average defensively. At the plate he has been good enough even this year after his rough start. He will be a strong player for us for the next 5-7 years at least.
  14. Sorry, this doesn't track at all. He's already an average defender at worst with the ability to be a ++ defender when he learns a bit more. And the rest of his year certainly does make up for his horrible April. He came in, was very overmatched, and made the adjustments a professional needs to make. He has been a nice success since May, and projects as WAY more than a 4th outfielder. Starting corner at worst.
  15. It would be interesting to see what our top slot would net. A "B" prospect? More? I hadn't really considered the idea of packaging our slot within a trade to sweeten a deal and bring in a stronger prospect/player in return. This could help make Hammer et al more palatable to other teams.
  16. Interesting thought. Gets the shaft = hasn't earned as much playing time as Clete, but I think he should play anyway since he is a bigger part of the future wave. Gets the shaft. TD dictionary updated.
  17. All valid points, but why don't you think that Perkins can be part of that next wave? He's cheap. He's a hometown guy. He's signed for 3 more years. He's really good. Unless we are offered the farm, he looks like a nice building piece to me.
  18. I've said it already, but it MUST take a "Meyer or better" pitching prospect or a MLB ready SS that can hit and play good defense ~Elvis Andrus as a rookie, etc. Anything else and we'd be much better off keeping Glen, much better off.
  19. Good point. I too feel our future success is all but gaurenteed. It is not only likely but almost certain that some of our prospects will fail. But the sheer number of quality arms and bats in our system ensure that enough will make it to make our MLB team very strong in the near future. That is where my confidence lies, not in assuming everyone will pan out to All-Star level.
  20. Elite SS or SP prospect or it's no deal. And I don't think he brings in an elite SP prospect a la Mayer. So that leaves a can't miss SS prospect, preferably MLB ready or 1-2 years away from being MLB ready. Otherwise you keep Perk and his glorious contract and even try to extend him in a couple years if he keeps performing. Selling high only works if you get what you want back.
  21. Not sure why we're talking about an innings limit at all? Whether a starter goes 5, 6, 7 or more innings per start has much less to do with W&T on the arm than the actual number of starts made. For instance, Gibson can go an average of 5 innings and make 30 starts to 150 innings. Or he can go an average of 7 innings and make 21 starts to 147. But the year that saw him make 30 starts will almost certainly be harder on his arm. It's similar to the idea that once a reliever is warmed up and ready to come into the game, he's basically worked his arm enough to count as an appearance as far as fatigue goes. Also true (as far as I can tell) is that the prep a pitcher goes through for each start (bullpens, warmups, long toss, etc) counts for far more than an arbritary number of innings he throws during that start. Thoughts?
  22. Went to UND for 4 of my 9 undergraduate years. It did not go well.
  23. Seriously considering naming my first born son Oswaldo. Ok, I can't back that up. But nice hit.
  24. 7IP, 2ER would also be "Wildly Effective."
