    Right now this looks like a pretty loaded team with decent depth at all spots except SP. We have a couple minor leaguers moving up levels, and Festa may be seasoned enough later in the season, but Varland can't cut it as a SP. Revert him to RP and lets move on there. The hitting approach has improved immensely. When you are crushing Seattle you are doing something right. The other argument that we play in a poor division is also falling by the wayside. The central has 4 solid teams. Currently record wise the Central has the 6, 8, 9, and 12 best records in baseball. This isn't an easy division by any stretch of the imagination. You also have the White Sox who have gone 3 and 3 since finishing playing us. I think we will be glad that we got a lot of our games against them out of the way. Kepler is continuing to be a stud this year. SP is firing on all cylinders and the relief pitching could be dominant by mid season once we get everyone health and Staumont built back up. Lastly most of the consternation in this thread is now looking pretty silly a few weeks later.

    Staumont, primarily hung out at 94 mph with fastball but did hit 96 mph. That is encouraging. Hopefully can continue to ramp it up this summer.

    9 of Keplers 22 hits this season, of which 3 were doubles were to left field. When the defense continues to play an extremely heavy shift on you, taking the pitches on the outside of the plate to the opposite field is become an easy hit for Kepler. He is starting to realize that. Then when teams start to play him more straight up, watch the hits to right field explode.

    Lets just discuss the Trade Polanco - -.1 War Twins - Topa - still on the mend looks solid. He is likely our #3 or #4 reliever when healthy. Gonzalez - showing he can still hit at the A+ level can keep this up at AA will remain top 100 prospect. Bowen - Legitimately might be the best player out of the trade. His stuff looks nasty and he just looks like a solid confident pitcher out there. Yes its A+ ball but there is a lot to like there. Disco - as a throw in Cash Santana's (5.5 million contract) bat is slowly starting to warm up. Still solid defensively. With Kiriloff struggling again, very nice to have him. Better than Gallo immensely in my opinion.

    The 5.5 million we got from that trade effectively paid for Santana, I could see why some include him.

    The trade was a steal for us, if we would have gotten anything from Disco it would have been amazing. The arm was toast all along. Go watch some of Bowen pitching. He looks like a legit prospect, he was no throw in. Gonzalez is pushing towards .800 OPS in A+, would like to see a little more out of him. Biggest thing is need to hope Topa gets healthy. He really adds a lot of depth to the bullpen.

    Lopez at 11 pitches to after an inning, and 5 runs in support, should make him very comfortable to attack the zone. May end up with an easy day for the bullpen, they need it.

    Kepler with another, hit run and rbi, helping the counting stats and set up well to take another bump in increasing his WAR.

    The guy is a very good when not trying to pull everything and just hit the ball hard. Since July of last year, his BA is over .300. For a hitter that has basically averaged below .240 that is eye catching. Many have argued that the clock would strike midnight and he would revert back to his past 3-4 year statistics. That doesn't appear to be the case. I would love to get him at a decent extension price, but if he continues this he is effectively a lock to get the qualifying offer.

    The slider is wicked. Right now it his best pitch by far and the best locating it. The fastball doesn't ride much, but has elite velocity, does struggle a bit with command. Hovers 97 to 98 can push to 100. He really needs a 3rd pitch, add that with a little better command of the fastball with a little more movement and you are set. His focus has not been baseball til this year. I thought we would have seen a bigger jump lately. The real question isn't so much if the command will improve I think it will. Its if he is a reliever or a starter. Yes I wouldn't be surprised if someone picks him before us but my guess is he is still there unless he tears up for the rest of the season. I do agree there should be some very solid bats available at our pick as well. Brecht has potential #1 ability though with his 2 pitches, if he can find a usable 3rd with slightly better command, he will really boost the pipeline. As an aside the team has been picking more players with command issues just look at last years draft. Several with command issues, granted they weren't picked in the early rounds LOL.

    For comparisons sake this was against the following vaunted teams, Rutgers, Nebraska (best of the bunch, 3rd in B1G) and Northwestern (awful).

    McCusker I think got stung a bit by the Covid draft, never was able to get into an organization. We picked him up last year. Doing what he is doing in AA is impressive. Yes he is older, but he wasn't really a prospect. I don't think we can hold age against him in this case, other than it will take some of prime years away if he does make it. He has gone from no reasonable shot at being a major leaguer to he is now on the radar. For him it is a heck of an accomplishment. 2023 - Independent leagues, A, High A 2024 - AA, maybe AAA Could be in the big leagues next year if keeps improving.

    As shown, Arraez value is extremely tied to be an elite contact hitter as he offers very little else on defense or in power. For San Diego this was a luxury trade, they really don't need more offense, but a great table setter even as a DH is useful. He is also a nice fill in at 2nd base if an injury occurs. As shown San Diego paid very little in the grand scheme of things. Compared to Pablo, it was a massive loss for the marlins. The other issue is Arraez camp is clear they are looking for max dollars. No extensions, challenging arbitration. They are being extremely aggressive. I wish Arraez the best.

    I have seen 2 drafts where he has dropped to 23 to 24, however against weaker competition, he has dominated the last 3 weeks. Struck out 36 in 22 2/3rds innings and only 2 earned runs during those 3 games. Before that stretch he was struggling and looking more like a 2nd round pick. He his so tantalizing yet at other times struggles to get through 3-4 innings. I think he is likely a top 20 pick but still some one to keep an eye on.

    If there were ever a fanbase or an organization that would love the hitting style of Luis Arraez, its the Padres. He is the closest thing to Tony Gwynn since the former quit playing.

    Its really a .8 War for 17 games, as he was a -.2 War to start the season.

    He has effectively been at this pace since last July. He is making more contact and better contact. The current approach is so much better than previously.

    Just as a follow up. Kepler this season had a rough start to the season, but since coming back has been on a tear. For the Year a slash line of .293/.364/.812 134 OPS+ The last 2 weeks .421/.500/1.147 231 OPS+ He is hitting the ball confidently to all fields, waiting on outside pitches and slapping them into left field. The home runs are a little light which is to be expected with cooler temps, but I would gladly take this version of Kepler any day of the week. At .6 War for a little over 1 month, he is on a good start to have a heck of a season, and continue the discussion on whether he will get a qualifying offer or not 😉.
