  1. He was hitting .371 over the previous 23 games as of last Friday, the 14th. Kepler sucked - he improved. Santana sucked - he improved. Margot sucked - he improved. The continual macro view of a guy’s stats doesn’t mean much……he hit under a .100 for 5 weeks - to get to .225 through 12 weeks is a big change. It’s like a golfer finishing in the Top 5. couple times in May with a win in June……and one keeps saying they are terrible because they missed 3 cuts in April. Things change! He’s not a fabulous defender - granted. Neither is Larnach & Martin often looks like a Jr. High kid out there but he makes most of the plays. We have what we have……no perfect Teams.
  2. Gotta deal with reality - 9K’s in last 14 AB’s….3 hits, all HR’s. Same profile, different week of the season.
  3. Farmer finally at .200 BA with .307 OBP Margot to .225 BA with .302 OBP Santana to .247 BA with .327 OBP …..Leads team in HR & RBI ……with endless availability! How about a little bit of recognition for these 3 that absolutely “had to be DFAed” on May 10th & after……..no mention of positives, only complaints.
  4. TWINS: 4th (of the 6 A.L. playoff teams) in Pen ERA 3rd (of the 6 A.L. playoff teams) in OPS Varland - Lopez - Paddack are skewing this but all teams have outliers as well. Seems the Starter ERA is the primary concern. PEN’s issues are principally, health to date……having to pitch guys that won’t be around by mid-July.
  5. A reasonable Topa & then Stewart ……..any upside at all with Thielbar……..that’s a good Pen. Is Winder available anytime in next month? Varland won’t got to Pen until September ……needed as starter depth until then. I don’t see him being able to handle going back & forth “as needed” so stability as a starter is the deal. Funderburk & Ronny H. should be able to help in short-term.
  6. Maybe Festa? Didn’t check, but doubt he’s currently 40-man. Lee is pushing!! Cannot imagine Wallner being moved up if he’s striking out at a 50+% rate recently…….regardless of HR. Hope they don’t waste 2-3 days for a real view of Kepler. He’s either ready to go or he should get a 10 day break, immediately.
  7. Gotta say, Lewis is supreme bat talent, but your comment about Alcala got me wound up again………Lewis essentially ended the last 2 games in losses. His error for out number 3 on Wednesday and an unearned run being charged to Alcala created that loss to a reliever. Getting thrown out while already in scoring position in the 10th inning on Thursday is not good baseball, regardless of how high end the throw was from right center. Hitting a HR doesn’t excuse, or act as some leveling trade-off, for a bad play. Gotta say Lewis was at the heart of those 2 losses. Thielbar’s rope is getting pretty taught as well.
  8. Margot is hitting .281 v. LH pitching …..that skill & OF depth were the reasons he was acquired. It’s not Margot’s fault he has to routinely start v. RH pitching because Kepler was hurt - Wallner was absolutely terrible - Larnach had a bad toe - Kirilloff went in the tank after 3 weeks. .281 BA - .356 OBP - .747 OPS v. Lefties .230 BA - .308 OBP - .617 OPS overall He’s been just fine for most of the past 7 weeks! Farmer is hitting .196 and was at .085 on May 1st. His defense is at least average if not better. If he can get to .225-.230 by September he’s the player they wanted. Career BA of .255 so after his start, a .225 finish would be him hitting to his career average for 4 1/2 months.
  9. Signing him for $8M/yr for 4 years starting in ‘26 is a good move! RF - LF - 2B - SS are all places he “could” spend time at next year & forward. I know this will bring some wrath but IMO, Julien & Martin & Castro have 2B covered going forward in ‘25 and beyond. Lee at 3B solidifies the left side through ‘28 with CC. Larnach - Wallner - Martin - Castro - Kirilloff are the Corner guys from ‘25 forward. ROYCE at 1B m. This gives him a long-term home……injury risks go way down ……,Twins fill a Power Hole at that position ……,,etc. Royce could also move to LF …….he would fill a hole there too as an everyday guy on the grass. Lee - CC - Julien - Lewis (Julien at 1B doesn’t work for me) with Castro playing behind the Glove guys as needed and also playing regularly in the OF.
  10. When I watch games the problem (to me) is side to side. The plate is stationary and is always 17” wide……with the width of the ball - it should be considered 19-20” wide. It’s STATIC though……shouldn’t fluctuate based on where the umpire sets up!!! Guy’s up/down zone fluctuates with varying stances and the variation in physical make-up of the players. I can see the real potential for some missed pitches up & down and can live with that. Balls being called that are over the plate on the edge away from the umpire OR a pitch 3” inside being called a strike because that’s where the ump was set-up is tough to watch repeatedly.
  11. Jax will NEVER be traded if he stays healthy as a Twin……may leave in free agency but not traded. “Kjerstad may be the answer” & so might 125 other guys in AAA across MiLB & 6 of them are in the Twin’s system already. It’s pretty real …..other than hype, he’s not really shown that much upside ……if it were the case, The O’s would have him on their 26-man. Margot seems to have cemented himself, with Martin showing up as well, for the Corner RH hitting guy!! Wallner/Kirilloff/Larnach/Castro have the LH hitting LF spot sewed up through ‘24!!!
  12. Along with Okert & Paddack……. Current PEN is really good through 6 guys, despite a few issues. ……..Jackson has another 1 or 2 tries and w/o a steep improvement, he’s gone. Thielbar seems like a wasted roster spot at this point……when does he get his last try, or else?
  13. The SHOW is not for setting productive players aside and experimenting with guys based on where they were drafted. A player earns his way on to the roster. If Lee starts performing at some level other than “pretty decent” in St. Paul for some length of time, he’ll get brought up - til then, he’ll develop at AAA. The decisions have been made for the near term……Wallner - Kirilloff - Julien - Lee ALL need to do something at AAA, repeatedly, to get time on the MLB roster……Wallner is close but he’s the only one in the current conversation. The organization doesn’t make moves with the 26-man roster based on fan based curiosities……not with a winning Team. Castro leads the Team in AB’s - Hits…….2nd in OBP. His OPS+ is 120…..the guy has 24 XBH and it’s June 19…..I don’t really care where he plays if he is competent defensively…….his offense is what it is (not 2022)……taking the attitude that he’s due to fail can be applied to anyone on the roster……see Ryan Jeffers. I do not expect Castro to be the starting 2B spring of ‘24 but right now he fits.
  14. Margot (as of Friday) had hit .371 over previous 23 games……….same conversation as DFAing Farmer above …..,,what’s the big picture?? ………..not the knee jerk based on emotion from May 3rd!
  15. The Fan makes no sense - Castro has the Team’s most AB’s ……he’s respectable from the left side and great from the right side. You’re right - nobody else to play. …………….,,… ”regression” to what? ‘23?? He’s good playing! Farmer’s going nowhere. Lee or Julien for Martin may happen allowing Castro to go back out to the grass.
  16. Thielbar is a problem & if he doesn’t pitch well in very next outing - I see him being removed from 26-man for Funderburk.
  17. No. Could be done for a day or maybe two but they won’t go short a reliever for any length of time. All the speculation is fun but Martin going down and Wallner coming up in the next 10 days seems to be coming more & more real. Farmer started the year (5 weeks) hitting .085. He’s nearly at .200 7 wee kg s later and has never really been “hot”. I don’t see him going anywhere ………Dodgers is an interesting thought as it frees up $3M they could apply to a deadline acquisition …..,doubtful.
  18. Thanks for that tidbit - I tuned in sometime late in the 3rd. Nobody showed anything on Martin, other than the hero play, the rest of the night. Royce is hard to not get used to & he can’t keep up 2 HR’s every 3 games. It’s something to see!!!
  19. AGREED. It’s tough to give up a bunch of runs (4?) previous time out and then shutdown the opposition for 3-4 innings…..with a tired arm. But, if one isn’t commanding pitches it can happen every outing.
  20. I think it’s “no”, due to a low % of needing him on the regular. Long relief can be needed 2 days in a row and then not for 12 days. I like having him around and he seems to be deserving but that isn’t what drives things. The “competition” or discussion isn’t really between Varland and anybody, it’s between Jackson & Thielbar IMO.
  21. Alcala is starting to look “Stewart like” with his stuff and generally ….better control. It’s all about throwing strikes with him. Glad to see him at least progressing.
