    If Smeltzer isn't painting the black AND getting some favorable calls, he's just not capable of being effective. 88-89 mph top velo just ain't gonna cut it. He's a middle reliever at best, not a starter.

    We are so completely inept on getting a guy home in those situations. Time after time. Lead off triple and Buck dies there. We can't even hit a fly ball somewhere for a sac. It's pathetic.

    I think we're getting to see the real Smeltzer the last few starts. He's certainly not going to blow anyone away, and his stuff is average. He's very hittable. However, if Smeltzer has absolutely everything going for him on a particular day...hitting all the spots and getting guys to chase, he can be effective. I honestly don't think he's a viable, long term answer as a starter. I think his value will end up being as a reliever. Lefties hang around forever, and I bet he will too, but not as a starting pitcher.

    Fantastic research! As to Jeffers...he's an ok back up C, nothing more. What little, and very occasional, pop at the plate he has, isn't worth playing him as much as Rocco does You just can't keep running him out there as the starting C. To have both Jeffers and Sanchez in the line up together, with one as the DH...is lunacy.

    He definitely hasn't pitched as well since his return from Covid. Whether that has something to do with getting sick, it's certainly possible. We may never know. He's also a rookie and he probably has to make some adjustments, as the league sees more of him and gets the reports on him. He's not pitching all that badly, but just not as well as earlier in the season. We'll have to see how the second half plays out.
