  1. Is that an eye patch Rodgers is wearing? How cool would that be if he made it to the majors.
  2. It is not Anderson. Anderson wanted him to abandon the four seamer and just throw the sinker, slider and change. That's basically waht he is doing this year. I'm sure there are many factors, but the biggest one is familiarity. When you pitch five times a year against the same teams, they eventually figure you out. He's the same lazy head case he was in 2010 and 2011. He's just facing different hitters. I wager his success will diminish as teams figure out how to lay off the slider, and wait him out, as the Tigers did.
  3. Also on Mauer, he's had two historic slumps this year: One happened early when he tried to catch 5 days a week and his hands turned to mush; the other happened more recently when Doumit was hurt and Mauer had to catch everyday for a week. I think Gardy came up with the right formula for Mauer catching last year. No need to tinker with it.
  4. Aaron Hicks: Last 28 games: .271/.327/.521/.858 Last 14 games: .265/.324/.588/.913 Last 7 games: .250/.333/.625/.958 When you bat 0.040 in your first 28 games, and that at the lead-off position, you never dig out of that hole.
  5. I don't consider myself an apologist. But I acknowledge that I don't have visibility into a lot of the decisions, so I give them the benefit of the doubt when I can't know something. An example is on free agents, where we don't have visibility into what we offered to whom, except in rare cases, when the player or his agent says so (e.g. Liriano). On the other hand, if I know the facts and they clearly made a mistake given the facts, I am comfortable criticizing the FO. In my experience, those things line up less often than the critics on this site seem to think. Now for my positive: I think the Twins have done a great job the last five years in acquiring young talent. Unfortunately, the four years prior to 2008 were not good in that department, and we are dealing with the aftermath of those decisions on the big league roster now.
  6. Pretty good draft last year when Rogers and Baxendale (11 and 12) become top pitchers in the system a year after the draft.
  7. Probably May. Baxendale hasn't pitched much in AA.
  8. I think the Yankees will go after him. A lot of guys in his position go into NY and hit homers to right field. He fits that ballpark well, whereas Target Field, not so much.
  9. Also, had a conversation with a buddy who spent a long weeked in CR right after Buxton was promoted. He said "the [CR] right fielder [Walker] was clearly the best guy on the field of every game I saw." He said it was like watching Harmon. You got the feeling he could hit a homer in every trip to the plate.
  10. Nothing against Hicks, but I expected Walker to be promoted, considering that he seems to hit a homer and a double in every game.
  11. I understand taking Williams over Walker, but not Hicks. It must be defense and position. Looking at the numbers, especially lately, Walker is the better player than Hicks. But Hicks plays first and that's Vargas' position, so...
  12. Put it this way, of the 30 or so guys to whom the Twins have given significant playing time, Correia is near the bottom of the list of guys to complain about.
  13. Thanks. Saved me the trouble. There are some good names there. No aces, per se. But a lot of solid mid-rotation guys. My sense is it is much deeper than 2012. Between Santana, Garza and Hughes, the Twins could have a shot at a guy who would be a number 3 on most teams but would be our ace.
  14. How they can keep Adam Brett Walker down in CR any longer is beyond me. I'm usually a guy who preaches caution. But my goodness! He's destroying that league.
  15. We've talked about Sanchez ad nauseum. He's a shoulda, if he was willing. According to Liriano, we had a competitive offer, but he wanted to go to the NL. Not sure about the rest. Overall, it was just a really weak class.
  16. Because of all the intangibles, I think they will need to be blown away to trade him. But if they are blown away, they should trade him. I would start with Brock's proposal and add that the top 50 pitcher needs to be in AA or higher. He needs to be someone who could pitch in the majors next year.
  17. They changed draft coordinators from Radcliff to Johnson in 2008. That's when the current wave started with Hicks. More recently, the league changed rules around signing, so we can draft the best player available and not worry about signability. Finally, we built a better DR academy and started spending money there.
  18. Any idea who the next 10 are? Of course, Stewart would probably crack the top 10, as good as it is. Other top performers this year include Polanco, Harrison, Walker, Vargas, Baxendale, Tonkin, Minier, Duffey and Pinto.
  19. He's said to bowl a wicked twister.
  20. That was the line I expected for his season. I expected him to start slow and gradually improve, which was his pattern in the minors. But I was surprised he started soooo slow. I expect him to end the season with a line like that, which means he'll need to hit something like .280/.330/.410 the rest of the year to continue to dig himself out of that 2-48 hole. I think that's doable.
  21. The Twins have said repeatedly that when they call Gibson up, it's for good. Odds are Walters gets DFAd after the game tomorrow.
  22. I was with you until the health thing. Mauer has had the healthier career.
  23. The Leviathan has it right about competition. I just don't think he'll get moved. I think they want to give him a chance to get back to "normal" and see what they have at the end of the year. From what Ryan and Antony have said, they hope to keep him longer term, if he returns to average or above production for his position.
  24. Really? They don't want to pitch in a major league game? Did you ask them?
  25. They have 20 days. I believe they will use most of them. That was confirmed by Gardy today: Hicks will not be rushed back to Twins lineup | StarTribune.com
