  1. I have not heard a ball hit with that loud of a crack in some time. Wow. Inwonder what they will do with Plouffe when Sano is ready. Could he play left field?
  2. I think they were related. Hurt his arm. Couldn't locate. Tried to pitch through it. Hurt it worse. Had surgery.
  3. I think Diamond is a little like Alan Anderson. He had success when the league didn't know him. Won 17 games and the ERA title one year. Once the league figured him out, he didn't have the stuff to make the adjustments. Diamond doesn't have any plus pitches. He relies on keeping them guessing. In the age of video and detailed scouting reports, it's just a lot harder to keep them guessing.
  4. I think Correia and Deduno are safe for the time being. After that, all three of the guys could be gone by the all-star break.
  5. Thomas is a marginal upgrade over Hicks offensively at this time. But Hicks is much better in the field and is developing into a better player than Thomas will ever be. This year is supposed to be about getting ready for next year. I think Hicks will learn to play in the majors more quickly by playing in the majors now. So Thomas should go down when Hicks is ready. But it's nice to know Thomas a decent replacement in case Hicks' hammy injury recurs.
  6. I too had thought he'd return to form when he could work out regularly and get his strength and vision back. But he hasn't. And with each passing day, I lose a little faith that he ever will. I am not without hope, however, that he can somehow find himself again. Until he does, it makes no sense to even try to trade him. Let him play out his contract and hope for the best. If he shows something in July or August, he might still fetch a prospect. If not, it was nice rooting for him.
  7. I agree with Thrylos. The margins are so thin, it's tough to project better than back-of-the rotation for any of the lefties at the higher levels. We have some lefties in A ball and below with higher upside. And we drafted one this year. But we are short on lefty prospects at the B level in the upper levels. I would put Darnell at a solid C with an upside of C+.
  8. He has sat a lot more lately than he did early on. I'd be surprised if he's played in 1/3 of the team's games in the last month.
  9. This year is about development. We will need him to be more developed next year. He is not developing on the bench.
  10. I wouldn't expect full strides from him. He's taken baby steps in his development from the start. I'm happy with progress. Teams can't be all stars. You need some grinders too.
  11. Yep. I'm sure they're not in a huge hurry to get the guys who were just playing in Omaha last week onto teams. Those guys could use a break. In Eades and Slegers cases, I wonder how many innings they'll be allowed to pitch this year anyway. After that, it's a pecking order. Get Eades done this week. Slegers and Demuth done next week. And go from there.
  12. This. I wish Willingham had some trade value. We could move Arcia to left and give Parmelee the whole second half to get into a rhythm. This is exactly why Gardy is not a good manager to develop guys like Parmelee, because slumps happen and Gardy tends to bench guys when they slump if he has other options. But players (and young players in particular) need to play through slumps. Taking a day off to do extra work with Bruno in the cage is one thing. But weeks at a time as a pinch hitter do not help young players develop. Gardy does this with most of the young guys who are not budding stars (like Arcia). Parmelee's kind of a left-handed version of Cuddyer. Cuddyer struggled through inconsistent playing time for years until he finally broke out of Gardy's dog house. We can only wonder what might have been if he had been allowed to develop normally. I'd hate to see the same thing happen to Parm.
  13. I'd like to see him pitch. He must have some deception or something. At the very least a September call-up.
  14. Nothing against him as a man, because he's a good egg. But .279? Really? That's why I opened this thread? He hit like .336 and won a batting title the year before the Twins signed him. Now he's holding his own at a league a notch below the IL. Meh.
  15. I've heard 25% as a rule of thumb, no more than 30%.
  16. The key is to get him ready to pitch 180-200 innings next year. You don't do that by giving him 180-200 innings this year, because one study after another has shown that most pitchers don't respond well after adding 100 innings to their work load one year to the next. And you'd have to have a short memory to forget how Liriano fared the year after going almost 200 innings following a season in which he pitched none. It's much less risky to go 140 this year and 180 next year, if you can afford to.
  17. Sigh: I only like minor league journeymen when you need them. Otherwise, they just gum up the works.
  18. Thomas has done a decent job. But Hicks is better now and in the future. I'm inclined to throw out the first two weeks of the season. Since then, Hicks has been about what most people expected, which is fine--he's improved as the season went along. I don't see how AAA helps him all that much. And my only concern with him is his development. If you can show that he will develop faster in AAA, fine. I just don't see that.
  19. I did some research, and this is the best source I could find: Pitcher Workloads
  20. I think Gibson has a good chance to be better than Baker because he has a quality sinker and Baker does not. But I would be happy for a few years like Baker put up in his mid-20s and then we'll see what we've got.
  21. I don't think Parm is a long-shot. Will he be a star? Probably not. But power-hitting left-handed bats who can play multiple positions are actually sought after commodities. If you can develop one in house, all the better. He has learned everything he will learn in AAA. Now he needs a season of the majors to know what we have. What I've seen is encouraging, despite the numbers. He has a good eye at the plate. He hits the ball hard a lot. He plays good defense at two positions. I don't know why you would send him down. At the very least, he's a valuable bench bat.
  22. I understand the argument for a position player, especially going into an NL park. But I also understand wanting to get him comfortable and settled. Get him into the meetings to go over hitters with Mauer and Anderson. Maybe get him an inning out of the bullpen on Tuesday (in lieu of a bullpen session), watch his bullpen session on Thursday, and generally make sure we do everything we can to make his debut a success. This isn't a stop-gap call-up. He's here for the long haul.
  23. I think this back injury was really bad timing. Several reports had him going to Baltimore for a prospect. Now I think he'll need to come back and pitch decently for a couple of starts before that will happen.
  24. I think this is an area where Gardy has grown. Of course, it helps to have low expectations. When he routinely benched young guys, it was usually in the middle of a pennant chase.
  25. It will be more like 6-8 outings, assuming he averages 6 innings a start. He's at 92 2/3 innings now, so 6 outings will put him at around 130 innings.
