  1. At least it wasn't "Dozier's double" for the winning "hit".
  2. Sunday's game is win or else. The Angels travel to Houston for three games--and somebody has to win.
  3. I guess Escobar was deemed the goat--so he's gone!
  4. I gave "likes" to the anti-bunt comments, but I want to jump on that too!--bunting was stupid with a runner on first. If two base-runners, maybe OK, but definitely not in this situation!
  5. Apparently the Twins have been made aware of the rants :shoot: from TD about the bullpen so Hughes was moved to the pen so he can pitch to RHB in "high leverage situations".
  6. So, a "bad fan" is what?--someone who doesn't think the team will make it to the playoffs? Or what? To think "not make it to the playoffs" is simply pessimism. Is criticizing management the determining factor for a "bad fan"? I'd like to know--because that trait is virtually universal, and not just in baseball. Is the source of your discomfort that the Twins just lost two games to team that you dislike (or perceive to be a pushover)? Patience Doc, the Twins will win some more games this season--maybe even tonight. Now go have a Snickers Marsha, you get all cranky when you're hungry.
  7. The Twins are permitted to use their entire 40-man roster in September--why aren't there more of them here? That decision is beyond Molitor's level, he can only use those "available". As far as the decision to use Duensing? True he has failed too frequently--but then so have the "other available options". Some pitchers "weren't available"--and I believe that that decision came from above Molitor. This entire discussion, nay the entire thread, emanate from the pattern 1) Twins Lose a game 2) Dave goes on a witch hunt (Ryan is cheap/foolish, Molitor is stupid/inexperienced, and/or (player) is no good/used incorrectly). However, there is never a corresponding thread when the Twins Win despite the decisions of (Ryan, Molitor, and the use/misuse of no good players. Yes, sometimes the Twins win despite themselves.

    Dozier

When Dozier signed his contract it included "elevated status"--he belongs to the club. Recall it's Dozier's face that is on the folding schedule for 2015. Dozier is permitted (encouraged?) to play to hit HRs and to generate buzz/sell tickets. The Twins finagled to get Dozier in the ASG to help their "marketing". Bottom line--Dozier will not be change his swing to "hit to RF" or "get more walks"--he's doing exactly what the Twins want him to do!
  9. ...and yet he is still better than Gardenhire.
  10. TD posters tend to have the rosiest of rose-colored glasses about Twins prospects. That yields uber expectations (as well as considerable smugness) concerning future performance of said player(s) and the team as a whole. The many comparisons to Trout (as well as Mays and Griffey Jr.) now have been tempered by the reality of this Summer's performance--and some are hurt (WHY?) while others make excuses/rationalizations. Of course the book on Buxton is only in the first or second chapter and there is plenty of time for the story to improve. However, even the biggest fans must consider that Buxton's future is not that of a future HOFer but simply that of a good, solid, player. Your point on Correa is spot on! There were posts on TD that mocked Houston's selection of Correa instead of Buxton. I wish I had a $1 for every SS post on TD. I'm not criticizing the selection of Buxton, but I definitely disagree with those that criticize Houston for selecting Correa.
  11. Arcia would not be a better option. He is an all/nothing type of hitter (this Summer, generally nothing )--but the score was 5-3--an on-base type is far more useful than a pure slugger. OK, Santana has flaws, but he fits the profile of the OBA type much better than Arcia. I guess Arcia has become the poster-boy for straw-man arguments for hitters in this Forum--but that has become tedious especially considering his poor results at Rochester.
  12. "Everybody wins 50, everybody loses 50, it's what you do with the rest of them that decides your season". It isn't clear if this was one of the 50 losses, or one of the 62 that is fought over. Starting Hughes tonight with virtually no activity was asking for it--and that decision should be one of the five "plays" that determined the outcome. I disagree with the five selected--and their assigned weights. DET's fifth run has to be one of the five. Sano's 9th inning strikeout--I don't think that belongs. The first two outs made were likely more important in determining the final score.

    Big Papi

When was Ortiz proven to be a PED user? I had not heard this before.
  14. So, do we remove Plouffe from Gold Glove consideration--after the tongue he received for hitting 2 HRs Friday?
  15. I think it involves a rack.
  16. If he retains Anderson and PtoC it will ensure the Twins will never be dead last in the division.
  17. Many Twins pitchers have had "convenient" injuries (after a period of "suck"). There was talk of Pelfrey being replaced by Hughes (when he returns) while Duffet stays in the rotation. What's the chance that Gibson lands on the DL?
  18. I'm sorry, this is the second lamest excuse (first is the ~160 innings limit) used for this discussion. There are numerous names that are expendable right now. Additionally, should a team select a player they are obligated to keep said player on the Active Roster (like the Twins are doing with Graham) for the entire season or give him back to the Twins. There will be sufficient players who just plain aren't ready and wasting a spot on the Active Roster is unjustifiable. Please consider, that much of the discussion of a Berrios promotion is caused by the wastage of an Active Roster spot for Graham in the first place. The Twins need(ed) a quality, veteran RP--but can't have one one, because of Graham. True, this season has been far more successful (in Wins/Loss record and playoff contention) than was expected in the preseason--but to not take full advantage of "unexpected success" is just plain wrong on so many accounts.
  19. Hmm, I guess we'll have to look elsewhere to find the winner of the Fireman of the Year Award.
  20. Everybody is "on his way out"--this is an empty statement. Hopefully, the Twins soon promote someone better than Perkins, so huge salary dollars aren't allocated to a one-inning pitcher.
  21. I certainly hope no one is suggesting wasting Berrios as a closer--a complete waste! If Berrios fails as a starter (a la Perkins) then move him to the bullpen. There should be plenty of RPs in the system to audition as closer--perhaps even two or three which would permit a "bullpen by committee".
  22. While "playing meaningful games in September" sounds like a "good" result--it is truly the objective of every team, every season. In fact, most teams in MLB can still say "they are playing meaningful games" today! As a goal, that is a rather low bar. My response is why after you stated the Twins are "keeping assets in reserve" would you be satisfied if the team falls a game or two short? There was unspent budget (Santana's 80 game suspension) plus any insurance money recovered due to injury to players. Plus, anybody who realistically could contribute to the success of the team for the rest of the season. Everyone expects the players to "give their best" during the season, why not the Front Office as well?
  23. You omitted: Gardenhire was responsible for dumping Hardy--'team needed more speed'; Smith wasn't hired or promoted to scout, evaluate, or develop talent; player personnel director was "contacted" to "get Gardenhire a SS". Smith performed his role as "yes man" so the "real baseball people" could construct the team. Smith's role was never to evaluate players--that was the responsibility of "real baseball people". If Pohlad (or the rest of the executive committee) wanted "a real baseball person" as GM--they could have done so! It was well known that Smith wasn't one. Smith didn't "promote himself" to GM.
  24. The cure to bullpen woes is simple--better and longer starts from the starters. The standard needs to be changed to seven innings and there needs to be a discontinuance from the reliance (abuse!) on using one-batter pitchers.
