  1. As expected and as it should be. May was out-pitched (as a starter) by every one (even Pelfrey) except Nolasco (who stunk last year). Face it, there are 5 guys with major league experience on the team who were better than May--and that doesn't include Berrios or any other minor league pitcher in the system. May had success in relief with plenty of expectation that will continue.
  2. Then...there's the possibility that NY wasn't interested in Rosario...
  3. I guess we're all agreed--the Twins got plucked. A future perennial all-star (and possible HOFer) has been senselessly lost forever--and for absolutely nothing!
  4. When considering the value of a player hitting stats are only one element. Defense, base-running, leadership, and for Ruth--pitching are also hugely important.
  5. The Twins have an army of RPs in the organization--use them. The cream will rise. After all, how many times have we heard "...the best minor league system..." and "..this guy has got huge upside...". These guys are only asked to pitch ONE inning. The rubrik is not walks, or pitches thrown, it is opponents' runs scored. The rest is just stats for bar talk--analogous to football's "time of possession", or "hang time of punts".
  6. Do the Twins have a plan? Yes. But it probably isn't: the same as yours, the one you think it is, or much different than previous plans. I think they still view pitching as a luxury, bargain-basement veterans as a security blanket, and that additional minor league "experience" is a blessing. The plan? Control the budget and somehow repeat 1987.
  7. No, they aren't making too much of his weight. That size, doesn't start, stop, or change directions quickly. The stresses on the connective tissues increases dramatically. Running the warning track will be "a sight". In football, the players get about a week to heal the muscle pulls, strains--but baseball players play 6 days in 7. The Twins will need to build another "hot tub" in Ft. Myers. You know next to Mauer's.
  8. All of the "Aces" will be signed by Christmas--don't expect to see one in your stocking though!
  9. I think some of the confusion about Fien, a tendered contract, and free agency stem from the "Ortiz situation". Ryan tendered Ortiz a contract for a fixed amount and the threat that if he [Ortiz] didn't accept the offer [counter-offer to begin a negotiation potentially leading to an arbitrator's decision] that Ryan would withdraw the offer--making Ortiz a free agent. There has been no indication that Fien's offer is contingent on him accepting the original offer. As has been posted earlier, the Twins can take Fien (with a signed contract) to Spring training, cut him, and not be liable for the full value of the contract.
  10. My how perceptions have changed--not long ago most were posting what a great all-around athlete Sano is (and that surely he will be fine at 3B) and now he is reduced to a lumbering ox and can't play the OF (but will still excel at 3B). That hamstring problem he had last season suggests to me that Sano will battle injuries often.
  11. IIRC Seattle had a worse situation at catcher than the Twins--so why is anyone happy-dancing at the acquisition of a catcher fired from the Mariners farm system?
  12. He would be in charge of the bowling league and sunflower seeds.
  13. Conspicuously missing from this list are several big revenues teams: Yankees, Red Sox, Detroit, Houston, and Phillies. Probably several of these teams will be in serious contention come July and have designs on an "upgrade" at 3B. Exactly. I merely implied the "need" basis for a trade (sorry for to those who require a more detailed explanation) that the yield from a mid-season Plouffe trade could well be more fruitful than an off-season trade.
  14. Trading Plouffe midseason (2016 or 2017) is likely to fetch a better return.
  15. Plouffe for a relief pitcher would be foolish. A 3B is worth much more. Plus, the Twins have an abundance of RP candidates.
  16. Let's see: 4 LH pitchers, 2 RH pitchers and a power hitting OF. It seems that there is little in organization near the majors that isn't already on the 40-man roster. It also seems that there is much more emphasis on pitchers than before. Also, I conclude there won't be a FA pitcher added soon.
  17. Nolasco/Milhone is the 5th starter and the other is the long-relief/spot starter. These two two might flip-flop through the season. Late inning relief specialists: Jepsen, Perkins, May. Three guys for extra-innings, mop-ups, and all else: from the RP pool and already on the team. These guys have options--so use those options. Those RPs that succeed stay, others get replaced--pretty much what everybody else in baseball does with the marginal players. Spend a ton of money on a RP? Huh? They pitch 60-80 innings a year. Use that money (plus the rest of the FA budget) to acquire someone who will contribute much more.
  18. I"m not sure if this one belongs in 2014 instead--replacing Gardenhire/Anderson.
  19. ...$11MM...yeah, the Twins swim in those waters.
  20. There are too many specific names on the list. Example: Josmil Pinto. It wasn't the "loss" of Pinto (the handwriting of that was on the wall in before this year), it's the complete lack of immediate, viable replacements for Suzuki. The "loss" of one is sort of expected, the fact that the cupboard is completely bare (internally) for several years is the problem. The failure of Meyer--was overcome by the success of Duffey. The real problem was that there was a bullpen problem that ensued because Stauffer was a failure, Graham wasn't trustworthy, May was treated like a shuttlecock, and the AAA promotions didn't work-out. The Arcia failure is tolerable--there are many other (better) options. An unspoken problem is third base. Plouffe is OK, but what about two years from now when he is far more expensive. Sano may or may not be the solution--the problem is there isn't anybody else coming up to displace them. There are plenty of others in the pipeline for SS, 2B, and 1B--but not 3B.
  21. Let's compare May's starting pitcher statistics in 2015 with the other Twins starters in 2015--Santana, Gibson, Duffey, Milhone, and for good measure Pelfrey and Nolasco--and May isn't top 5. Then add Berrios and you are just beating the same dead horse. Fact is, May is a younger, cheaper, Pelfrey clone--who you have worn-out you keyboard proclaiming that he (Pelfrey) belongs in relief. Which is where May actually should be (and I am convinced where Ryan will assign him).
  22. The Twins swim in the shallow waters of free agents. Anybody they sign (like Stauffer last year) is expected to be the "low-risk, leauge-average" RP. The premise of the article concerned the "higher-cost, higher-expectancy" RP. The price for a top RP was just defined by Boston in the Kimbrel trade--and the Twins won't even consider paying that price. The trade-off is cycling through the 6-10 possibilities in the Twins minor-league system (~$0.5MM/year) or spending the $1-3MM/year to buy a security blanket from the dumpster. Management loves to boast about their system--until they have to put it on the field. I say it's time to find out who belongs--and who doesn't belong--and mediocre free agents don't belong anymore! The 90-loss demon has been slain, it's time to build for 90+ wins rather than 80+ wins.
  23. ...and by extension, use those relief pitchers. The Twins have many "ready for tryout".
  24. Agree. I posted as much a few minutes ago in a different thread.
