  1. Wouldn't a 2 day assignment be perfect for those guys? You don't want them on the bench long term, but 2 days is nothing. FWIW, they'll get a multi day interruption for the all star break next week anyway. I don't think that violates the "play them every day" philosophy either
  2. Yup. Still can't believe that 4 years of Andrew Miller cost less than the 3 year Phil Hughes extension...
  3. I'm not opposed to a trade but I wish we had been looking more aggressively internally. Hildenberger should have a month-plus of MLB experience by now, including some leverage appearances. Reed and Bard could be getting looks by now as well. (Why is Bard still in AA?) No offense to Jorge, but Romero could have a spot start already in preparation for a possible pen assignment later. We had 4 months before the trade deadline to find internal solutions and I don't think we've done a good job of that. Breslow, Wimmers, Belisle, Haley, etc. Hard to get excited about a potential deadline deal in light of that approach.
  4. Let's see... Santiago's next turn is Friday. Gee is scheduled to pitch today in a doubleheader for Rochester, so probably not him. Turley pitched 5 innings yesterday, so not him either. Felix Jorge would line up pretty well, since he started last Saturday. We wouldn't need a 5th starter again until Tuesday July 18.
  5. I wouldn't worry about it. Maybe just an asterisk note if one of those teams had a game in-progress at press time? Even then, you'd probably only have to note it for teams around the top / around the Twins -- I don't suppose we're too concerned with the day-to-day jockeying of Detroit and Chicago right now! In theory, B-Ref has some nice embedding tools, that can be defined by date --- but they don't update promptly enough to be of any use here. Not sure of any others. http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/?date=2017-07-03
  6. I posted this elsewhere too, but the Angels don't need a 5th starter for a while, thanks to an off day and the all star break.
  7. You are right. Minor league players can have their contract renewed 6 times, so parts of 7 seasons if you count their original contract. So Rodriguez, as a 2011 draftee, is eligible after this season. Bard and Zack Jones would be after 2018, as 2012 draftees.
  8. Burdi would be a fantastic pick, if left unprotected. Built-in excuse to be on the 60-day DL for the first half of 2018.
  9. There is no DL in the offseason, so Burdi would just occupy a 40-man spot until March, then we could move him to the 60 day and open up a spot for someone else. But from November (when I presume he would be added) until March, he will count against our 40. They will have to make room for May too as soon as the regular season ends. O'Rourke will probably just get cut at that point.
  10. Yes. Once you are eligible once, you are pretty much eligible forever until you are on a 40-man roster (or a free agent). I think Jones and Bard won't be eligible for minor league FA until after 2018.
  11. New wrinkle: the seams are different, leading to more blisters for pitchers: http://www.tsn.ca/stroman-leaves-game-with-apparent-finger-issue-1.795756
  12. This is correct, Meyer was indeed optioned. Although the Angels have an off day and the all star break coming up, so they don't need a 5th starter for a little while.
  13. Bard, Van Steensel, and Hurlbut will be repeat Rule 5 eligibles, I think. Melotakis will be eligible for the first time too.
  14. On that note, last week I heard that Molitor said the Breslow DL stint was timed so he'd get a little extra time off with the all star break too. Not sure if that was just an empty statement to add authenticity to the transaction, but in theory that could mean another pitcher would have to be removed by that time to activate Breslow.
  15. Don't know if this deserves it's own thread, so I'll just put it here: Vargas optioned to AAA, Adrianza activated So we still have 13 pitchers. On the horizon: Haley set to make a rehab start in AAA today (Tuesday)
  16. Bard apparently has some good spin rate: http://twinsdaily.com/topic/25111-depue-gonsalves-on-spin-rates-haley-on-his-role/
  17. Burdi is already out with TJ surgery. Bard is still buried at AA. Help us, Jake Reed, you're our only hope. (And John Curtiss)
  18. Here's the line, last paragraph of the Jorge story: http://www.twincities.com/2017/06/29/twins-miguel-sano-invited-to-all-star-home-run-derby/ Makes some sense. The 26th man is available for both games, so it doesn't make too much sense to use the spot on a starter. Also, the 26th man can be recalled again within 10 days, which is not likely a concern with Jorge. (Not that we want Gee back that soon either, though!) My guess is they are looking to drop a reliever for Pressly soon anyway. Depending on how tonight goes (or even Saturday's game 1?), they could drop that reliever, recall Jorge for the start, and then option Jorge and recall Pressly for Sunday (or even Saturday's game 2, if Jorge started game 1). (Hopefully dropping Belisle, but more likely optioning Busenitz, or possibly Hildenberger instead pending further results. Boshers seems safe for now, given their recent reliance on him.) If it was Belisle, it would also open up a 40-man spot, so it wouldn't have to be Pressly coming back yet. Jake Reed? John Curtiss? Those would be fun. EDIT: Oh yeah, the Twins are still running a 13 man staff, and Adrianza just started a rehab assignment at AAA. He'll be eligible to return Monday, and I'm guessing we will go back down to 12 pitchers then.
  19. I wonder if part of it is they want to further evaluate Jorge before a potential trade. Romero's likely not going anywhere unless they make a really big splash, which is doubtful. (Eventually, Jorge might find himself on the 40-man bubble earlier too, but probably not this year.)
  20. Really? I think that is what Beane would ask for but I'm not sure Gray is all that great anymore. He outperformed his FIP earlier in his career, and now he is under-performing it. Meanwhile, Sickels had Gordon and Gonsalves at 43 and 60 before the season (Gordon's probably risen a bit), both B+ with a 2018 ETA.
  21. Jorge wasn't eligible for Rule 5 this past winter, because he was added to our 40-man roster. He was eligible the previous winter (December 2015) but of course his experience was pretty minimal at that time.
  22. Berardino reports it will be Felix Jorge
  23. He was 25 at the time. And he was no longer in AA either.
  24. Overall, his FIP matches his ERA pretty well so far in 2017. So I don't think he's been BABIP lucky overall, even if he was in this particular start.
  25. Drury has been their everyday 2B this year, and defensive metrics suggest he might be doing all right with the conversion. And both Drury and Tomas are RHB. Tomas for his career is better vs LHP than RHP, and Drury is basically the same vs LHP as RHP. I wouldn't read too much into half-season platoon splits (or even full season platoon splits, look at Justin Turner last year). Tomas should probably be replaced for other reasons, of course. I could see them targeting an outfielder, but nothing that would cost Bradley.
