  1. DFA removes the player from the roster immediately. There would be no reason to DFA well before any related trade was official/announced. You may be right on waivers, but I suspect he would be claimed. He's left handed, 25 almost 26 years old, former 2nd round pick, stats are good, and he has options. Remember Brooks Raley? It doesn't take much for someone to claim him, even if they plan to waive him themselves a little ways down the road. I guess O'Rourke cleared last year, but he was 28 years old with a career MLB ERA of 5.83 at that point.
  2. If they are thinking about cutting Breslow soon (and they have to be, right?), now would be a good time. Then they could call up Granite for a few days without DL'ing any position players.
  3. Melotakis can't be added back unless he clears waivers.
  4. Pioneer Press article: http://www.twincities.com/2017/06/21/twins-to-play-two-games-in-puerto-rico-next-season/ They get quotes from Kenny Vargas, but is it even clear he will be on the team next April? He'll be out of options (I guess that means he won't be in AAA), and he's got an 80 OPS+ for 2017 so far, and 98 career... Also, it's unclear that Berrios would even be lined up to pitch either of those games. I don't like the idea of us setting up our rotation just to make that happen, either...
  5. The Twins have variable pricing per game. These particular games will be a Tuesday and Wednesday in April against a frequent opponent, so they would have been among the cheapest games on the schedule. So season ticket holders will lose 2.5% of games, but almost certainly won't save that much on their total bill. In fact, if the Twins raise prices again, they may not save anything. Also, for single game attendees such as myself, Wednesday is the most affordable night, with $5 student tickets (and similar/cheaper on the secondary market) and $1 hot dogs. This means one less opportunity for my family to go to Target Field in 2018, and comes on the heels of their 2017 abolition of kids ticket discounts on Sundays...
  6. Since his return, Gibson has a 4.89 ERA and 4.92 FIP, good for a 110 ERA- and 112 FIP-. Not that different from his pre-2017 career marks (113 ERA-, 104 FIP-). Take out his first start back and the ERA improves to 4.01, but the FIP stays basically the same.
  7. And after everything they did to baby his arm...
  8. Classic Meyer returned tonight vs Boston: 3.1 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 2 BB, 3 SO, 3 WP
  9. I hope Wimmers wasn't on any kind of bubble that required extra MLB evaluation this year before a decision could be rendered! He was pretty clearly marginal. Heck, same for Tonkin and Santana too. Outside of those two, they haven't really been shuffling through bubble players, they've been adding more marginal guys to shuffle (Wimmers, Tepesch, Wilk, Chapman, Gee, arguably Haley, etc.). I guess Rosario made a brief appearance, and Boshers has been hanging around too... But Busenitz and Hildenberger (and yes, Turley!) are a step forward, hopefully a sign of things to come.
  10. Actually, Wimmers has been on the roster relatively little. He wasn't added to the 40-man roster ever until last August, then was removed after the season and added back June 1st this year. I could have done without the reprise this year, though! He's certainly been around the org for a long time, and that will probably continue for the rest of this season at least.
  11. Yeah, I'd probably vote Breslow or maybe even Haley.
  12. If I may answer as a fellow Turley backer, I'd prefer Turley going down to AAA for a few bullpen reps. He's predominantly been a starter as a pro, and given how his first taste of MLB went, I'd want him to be fairly comfortable with a bullpen routine before trying him again at this level! Maybe in a couple weeks, although hopefully someone else pushes Breslow out before then too.
  13. They don't have to put him on waivers for up to 4 days. They can trade him to anyone prior to that time. Probably unlikely, although a team could offer a little more than the waiver fee, or their own marginal prospect, if they thought Melotakis might be claimed ahead of them. And once outright waivers are requested, they aren't revocable either (that's only August trade waivers). So there's no negotiating with a claiming team or anything like that.
  14. I'm not sure it's really "continuing to trim the fat" -- remember, they have been adding fat back as they've been trimming it (i.e. Wimmers). It's more like, at least they are exercising a bit after their waiver-wire binges. They've finally gotten a couple new names on there that are interesting, though (Busenitz and Hildenberger, and hopefully a Turley resurrection in relief ).
  15. Yes, I understood that. But when the front office decided not to add Park back to the roster, they still kept him and kept a 40-man spot free for other use. There was no risk of losing any players there -- actually adding Park back to the roster would have risked losing someone else. Their choice was actually the risk-averse option. That's not the case here -- Melotakis is at risk of being lost. Might ultimately be a fine decision, but it's not really comparable to keeping Park off the roster.
  16. Tracy is almost certainly a non-factor, but he's a lefty starter. Maybe this means they plan to work Turley in relief in AAA? Would still like to see Bard pushed.
  17. No problem! I notice Wikipedia is also incorrect about adding the player back to the 40-man roster. That's not listed at the MLB site, or in the link that Wikipedia references. Can't remember where I read the language before, but I am pretty sure it's only possible to add them back if you haven't already replaced them on the roster. Probably only applies to situations where the corresponding transaction falls through? EDIT: Maybe it applied more to Optional Assignment Waivers, which no longer exist this season? http://www.thecubreporter.com/08042015/why-player-designated-assignment-and-then-optioned-minors Again, Optional Assignment Waivers doesn't exist anymore. (I think Andrew Albers was one of the last to go through its machinations late last season ) That would mean Melotakis is, for intents and purposes, going to be traded or waived shortly.
  18. It's been lowered to 7 days now. So they have just 4 days to put the player on waivers, and 7 days total to do something.
  19. I don't think they can do that. You can't add a DFA'd player back to the 40-man roster if you've already replaced him on the 40-man roster -- so effectively, you can't add them back. Think about it logically: otherwise, you could rotate two guys through the same single 40-man roster spot almost indefinitely, just by DFA'ing one for 7 days, then the other, etc.
  20. If these pitchers could really pitch in a MLB pen for the next several years in any meaningful way, the Twins probably wouldn't be DFA'ing them, right? I'm sure the Phillies already have similar guys in their own system that require evaluation (I see they just called up lefty reliever Hoby Milner, a Rule 5 pick last winter that Cleveland returned). I didn't see that MLBTR chat, but even if the Phillies eventually do settle for a 30th ranked prospect for Neshek, they'd be fools to accept that a month in advance of the trade deadline. Neshek was the #2 RP on MLBTR's Top 50 trade candidates list, and #6 overall. The other two top relievers (Robertson and Hand) both have team control beyond 2017, so who knows if their teams will even find common ground with a buyer before the deadline. It's highly unlikely the Phillies will have to settle for less than a 30th ranked prospect, and such a prospect isn't too much to gamble that Neshek will stay healthy for a month and something a little bit better might come along. Also, the Phillies have top waiver priority right now. They have first dibs on any player the Twins put on waivers, for free! (Well, the waiver fee.) They'd be stupid to give up an asset for a waiver candidate except as a last resort (i.e. right before the deadline). They also passed on Haley in the Rule 5 draft last winter. (Plus, Haley is allegedly hurt.) If you want to propose trading junk for Neshek in a month, you may have a case depending on the market, but right now, it's pure fantasy.
  21. I didn't say they'd get a lot, but they'd be fools to accept so little now. They're not going to get less than these Twins DFA candidates in late July. And if no elite relievers get moved, they might get a little more then too.
  22. No. The Phillies aren't trading a reliever with a 0.63 ERA and a reasonable salary a month ahead of the trade deadline for assorted 40-man mediocrities. Melotakis is the only one you list who might have positive value right now, and it's probably fairly slight.
  23. But there, they kept Park, and got the benefit of stashing him in AAA and keeping an additional 40-man spot open; here, they'll likely lose Melotakis, and the only immediate benefit is rostering Gee (who could have taken Breslow's spot instead).
  24. Silver lining confirmed! Thanks for coming through, Seth! This must also confirm that they expect Melotakis to be claimed on waivers (or traded à la Wheeler), or they probably wouldn't move up a permanent guy like Curtiss. Guessing Wimmers clears waivers and is back on the Rochester roster in a couple days.
  25. I seem to recall reading that perhaps half of all teams don't spend their entire bonus pool? It was a comment around here, though, with no data or link... Would be interesting to see that breakdown (and how it shakes out for teams picking first, of course).
