  1. Now that I think of it -- did Twins Daily pull a Tonya Harding here?
  2. Flip him to the same teams clamoring for his services this summer?
  3. I think Graterol is like Alcala -- Roster Resource has them mistakenly eligible this winter. They both signed after the conclusion of their minor league seasons in 2014, and were 18 or younger on the preceding June 5. Thus, neither should be eligible until their 5th Rule 5 draft beginning in 2015, which would be 2019.
  4. Interesting question. Pineda and Castro are going to take two of those spots -- there's no disabled list in the offseason. Here are 7 new Rule 5 eligibles that also warrant consideration: Gordon Wade Wiel Arraez Jay Stashak Vasquez Here's another 2 repeat Rule 5 eligibles that could be discussed: Stewart Reed We'll estimate 9 internal additions. Subtractions, we have 5 free agents who might be gone -- but I could just as easily see all of them either retained or replaced by another MLB player: Mauer Forsythe Belisle Rodney Santana So then you're cutting chaff. Could start with pitchers that haven't been used much: Busenitz, Curtiss, De Jong, Drake, Duffey, Slegers. That's 6. Astudillo is probably gone. Wilson too. I'd guess Granite is cut, then one of Grossman or Field, and you have 10 spots cleared. For wiggle room, you've got the other of Grossman or Field, plus Magill. Not too tough. A little less wiggle room if they added Rooker, though.
  5. From August 3rd: "Right-hander Nick Burdi, the Pirates' Rule 5 Draft pick working his way back from Tommy John surgery, had his rehab assignment stopped on Friday due to a left quadriceps strain." https://www.mlb.com/pirates/news/jung-ho-kang-has-left-wrist-surgery/c-288706054 He's already been shut down for a week, so he's eligible to reset his 30 days rehab. That's what the Twins did with Ervin Santana earlier this season. Also, guys coming back from Tommy John surgery are also eligible to apply for rehab extensions, up to 30 days in 10 day increments. https://www.thecubreporter.com/book/export/html/3539 So there was no real danger of the Pirates needing to roster Burdi before Sep. 1st this year.
  6. I think we have to re-calibrate. I'm not even sure it's worth looking at minor league numbers for relievers anymore. My concern is that the new front office has done more passing up and cutting than they've done bringing in good relief talent. Finding guys that can make it is more valuable than identifying guys who can't.
  7. Or at least, we can trade them away in another lost season in 5-6 years! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GibiNy4d4gc
  8. One of my big gripes with the front office is how they waited until late June to call up Mejia this year, and then they sent him back down right away after the heat stroke game in Chicago. (Technically worse: they sent Mejia down after Lynn's poor start on the following day.) Not that Mejia would have been a savior or anything, but he was a solid enough option to help shake things up, either as a starter or perhaps even in long relief.
  9. Forsythe is 2 years removed from showing any power. And his only meaningful recent versatility is playing 3B. He'd have to show a pretty solid return to form for me to consider bringing him back -- a binge of singles and walks alone won't cut it. (.583 BABIP so far with the Twins!) Keep in mind the market for infielders this offseason -- Forsythe doesn't look that compelling, and our projected payroll room doesn't suggest we need to go dirt-cheap on the position either. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2016/12/2018-19-mlb-free-agents.html
  10. Demonstrating that he is ready to fill the shoes of Matty B!
  11. Actually worse than that -- the Twins couldn't sign Morales until June 8 (once the draft started). And he started playing for us the next day, on June 9. Presumably he was working out on his own up to that point, but he was basically 3 months behind everyone else. And coming full circle -- Morales came to the Twins from the Mariners, who had replaced Morales by acquiring... Logan Morrison!
  12. First of all, my post contained an explicit Spinal Tap reference. Don't worry about taking it too seriously. Second, they could have said "prospects". That is what everybody here has been saying, repeatedly (including you, I think) -- "11 prospects." Of course, the word "prospect" probably doesn't play well with the intended audience of this letter right now (disappointed MLB season ticket holders). I am guessing that is why the term was avoided, rather than a desire to include and motivate Forsythe. Even switching the term to the more generic "players", though, they added the qualifier about players who will contribute to our future. It is implied that by contrast, the players we traded away were not going to contribute to our future. So saying Forsythe will sort of invalidates the logical premise of the statement. They could have said "11 players who can be Twins beyond 2018" or something if they really cared about it. I don't think Forsythe gives a darn. I don't either. Frankly neither does the front office, they were just looked for some words to placate disappointed season ticket holders. I just thought it was odd when I read the number 12 there, remembered the number 11 from here, then looked it up to see if I missed some PTBNL or international bonus cash or something. Then I thought of the Spinal Tap joke -- maybe they just felt 12 was better because it was one more than 11.
  13. They can be traded to the claiming team, but only in a 48 hour window after the claim. If they go unclaimed, they can be traded anytime. You are right about the 30 day waiting period to request waivers a second time. And the second trip through waivers is irrevocable. https://www.thecubreporter.com/book/export/html/3528
  14. They just can't quit him! Per Berardino:
  15. Perhaps not. But that just makes it more important to time the promotion, if at all possible, for maximum impact. You want him to have significant impact on 7 MLB seasons, preferably starting with a competitive one.
  16. I hope they don't take this as any sort of challenge, but the Twins would need to go 10-41 the rest of the way to reach 100 losses. I guess the 2011 Twins finished pretty close to that -- they went 10-40 just before winning their last 2 games and narrowly avoiding 100 losses. I know last night is fresh in our minds, but I am not sure if we are that rough of a squad, even after the recent trades.
  17. Morrison is on pace for 506 PA right now, so if we keep playing him, the 2019 option cost will go up. I posted this elsewhere, but Morrison only got $6.5 mil guaranteed (including buyout) coming off his 2017 season. Doesn't look like there is any chance we pick up his 2019 option at a net cost of $7-7.5 mil, even with a solid finish.
  18. I think you are looking at wrong line. Austin has a 100 wRC+ in MLB this year, but at AAA, it's 131 (Yankees AAA) and 146 (Twins AAA), basically the same as Rooker.
  19. I don't think so. First of all, Verlander had a full no-trade, so he could block a waiver assignment just like a trade. Secondly, I think the Tigers wanted to eat some of the contract to get talent back -- they didn't really need pure salary relief, and Verlander was still good enough to expect some return, assuming they could convince him to waive the no-trade.
  20. Morrison's 2019 option is $8 mil, or a $1 mil buyout. Technically, he is also on pace for 506 PA which would increase the option to $8.5 mil. So, net $7 mil or $7.5 mil. Given he only got $6.5 mil guaranteed (including the buyout) in late February coming off a career year last year, I think we can safely conclude he would get much less this winter, even if he goes on a "mini hot streak".
  21. Our last two position player pitching appearances (Astudillo and Garver) have both come immediately after Matt Belisle appearances in the same game. That's a special kind of setup man!
  22. Drake has had hundreds of professional innings for us to evaluate. Garver had literally zero. I think it would have been irresponsible NOT to pitch Garver last night, to see if he has what it takes to be part of our 2019 pen.
  23. Yup. And I have mentioned before, but sometimes if you are interested in a player, claiming him in August might actually be counter-productive, as it only gives you 48 hours to strike a deal. Let him go unclaimed, it gives you the whole month. Probably irrelevant with Mauer, but the Astros probably wouldn't have landed Verlander last year had they claimed him -- they needed the full month to negotiate.
