  1. FWIW, with the Twins off day Monday, we wouldn't need a 5th starter again until Saturday August 18, and Mejia would be eligible to return that day (assuming they make his DL stint retroactive). Although I have no idea if Mejia would actually be ready to return that soon. Still no excuse not to start Romero on Sunday. If anything, the Twins should probably go with a 6-man rotation at this point, even without Mejia (Romero + Gonsalves?) and swap fresh relievers up and down in the Duffey/Drake spots as needed.
  2. The one I like to trot out: Bartolo Colon was born the day before Todd Walker.
  3. Yeah, I was looking at potential 40-man additions in another thread, and they probably have room for Stewart if they want. But if they're going to add him to the 40-man and keep him into 2019, then there really isn't any urgency to move him up to MLB right now either. I'd probably rather see Romero, who could/should be in the opening day rotation next year. And Gonsalves after that.
  4. Yup. I hope it's Romero, and they just let Rochester do a bullpen game on Saturday. Although I suppose the Twins could do a bullpen game on Sunday instead, but that would feel pointless.
  5. Good idea, I should have mentioned him too. But Thorpe just pitched on Wednesday, so Sunday would be short rest for him.
  6. Well, if you don't think Stewart will be selected in Rule 5 again (or if he's selected, you think he could be returned), then you're probably better off leaving him off the roster for now.
  7. He'd need a 40-man spot, but I would guess he is well-rested.
  8. As for who gets sent down Sunday to make room for the starter, I'd guess Duffey. Although they could DFA Oliver Drake yet again. Seems doubtful we could make another trade by Sunday.
  9. Figured it deserved its own thread, because it implies another roster move soon -- Mejia was scheduled to start on Sunday in Detroit. It will probably be Fernando Romero, who last started Sunday Aug. 5 for Rochester (and he did quite well). Could also be Littell on regular rest, although his Tuesday start was poor this week. Gonsalves and De Jong just pitched the last two days for Rochester, so it won't be them. Non-40-man, Kohl Stewart is scheduled to start tonight for Rochester.
  10. Ooh, how about a "family business"?
  11. Yup: https://www.thecubreporter.com/book/export/html/3521 And a player in the minor leagues isn't considered on "optional assignment" unless they are on the 40-man roster. That means in 2015, Duffey wasn't on "optional assignment" despite playing in the minors from April through July. Only in August, when the Twins added him to the 40-man roster and then sent him back down for 7 days, was he considered to be on "optional assignment". (On the flip side, Duffey got MLB service time credit for those 7 days too.)
  12. This is a fair point. A lot of people said they had a good offseason, but honestly, if they had done any less, I think it would have been a disappointing offseason: - We lost 2 relievers from an already suspect pen, so we signed 3 FA relievers (1 of whom was recently back from surgery) - We lost approximately one SP to attrition (we'll call it the Garcia/Colon spot), so we traded for Odorizzi - We had a pretty mediocre DH situation, so we signed Morrison - We lost another SP (Ervin) to injury at the beginning of spring training, so we signed Lynn If we had rolled into 2018 counting more on Duffey, Boshers, Hughes, or Vargas, I think that would have been bad. So really, these moves were kind of the minimum acceptable standard. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but I don't think it necessarily deserves any special credit either. Whatever credit you want to give them for not making any really bad moves (like giving a 4/52 deal to Alex Cobb) could just as well be offset by a lack of credit for failing to make any great moves (like getting Gerrit Cole or Miles Mikolas).
  13. A few luxury tax teams will be out. A bunch more frugal/fringe teams will likely be out at that price too (Cleveland, Oakland, Milwaukee, etc.). How many teams have ever taken on $4 mil for a month of a bench bat? I recall Justin Morneau, who was a bit different hitter than Mauer, but still a professional lefty 1B bat. It took us right up until the August 31 deadline (plus an August HR binge from Morneau?) to convince Pittsburgh to take on the remaining ~$2 mil salary, and all we got in return was fringe 40-man DFA candidates. I have a real hard time envisioning anyone stepping up for $4 mil on Mauer. Or assuming the Twins were willing to eat it, how many teams have given up a meaningfully "better set of prospects" for a month of a bench bat? That's going to take out those teams too. Yeah, it's already "budgeted" and we're in a lost season, but I have real hard time imagining the Twins would be particularly eager to eat millions just to get Mauer into a pennant race somewhere else. (Not to mention the PR hit of losing perhaps their most popular player, and in such a lopsided deal.)
  14. Duffey still has an option remaining for 2019. (He has only used options in 2016 and 2018 so far -- he stayed in the majors all of 2017, and spent fewer than 20 days on optional assignment in 2015.)
  15. Well, Gibson might be a realist. He's not entering FA until his age 32 season, and he might come with a draft pick penalty if we make him a qualifying offer. Given how the market played out last offseason, he might not have any real shot at "big money", and a more modest guarantee could be seen as acceptable (it's at least insurance for him in case of injury, which is always a concern for pitchers).
  16. Mauer is still due a lot of money for that small role, though. A few teams may not even be able to add it due to luxury tax concerns. And I wouldn't expect the Twins to eat it.
  17. Probably room for both if you want, assuming Drake isn't sticking around. Although does De Jong have the stuff to suggest he might be good in the pen?
  18. Worth noting that since we've renewed his contract 6 times, Duffey will be eligible for minor league free agency if we don't keep him on the 40-man roster this offseason, even if he clears waivers. Although he also has a minor league option remaining for 2019, if we keep him on the roster. Chase De Jong is in a similar spot, in terms of contractual status and remaining options.
  19. Yup. Given the circumstances, we might as well take one more look at him in August. If they like what they see, we can look at him further in September; if they don't like what they see, we can waive him on Sep. 1 and call up a new 40-man addition.
  20. I get your thinking -- I generally liked the moves last winter, and the trade returns at the deadline -- but I think that glosses over the intervening 4 months. Would have liked to see more of an attempt to shake up the 2018 team, maybe in May/June, before resigning themselves to seller status. Belisle was an underwhelming attempt, to say the least.
  21. The corresponding move for Austin hasn't been announced yet, but this guy was spotted entering Logan Morrison's suite at the team hotel:
  22. Yes, Oakland is paying the full remaining salary, per Beradino:
  23. You forgot his shot at pitcher! And for that, I envy you.
  24. FWIW, Bard has had a pretty poor season at AAA. His K rate is way down. I have no idea what his "spin rate" is, though. Probably better off looking at Duffey or Busenitz again -- they're both basically the same age as Bard anyway, and have accomplished more this season (and through the pro careers).
  25. Not to step on Tom's toes, but yes, Slegers had a setback. Sounds like it may not have been in the rehab appearance, but in a bullpen session a few days later (although I suppose it could have spanned both). "Slegers shut down with shoulder discomfort" https://www.mlb.com/news/aaron-slegers-pulled-off-his-rehab-assignment/c-289579486
