  1. Do you like pitch framing? Maldonado produced 0.6 WAR in just 114 PA for the Astros last year, and has had a few other recent seasons as good or better than that. He's definitely in the "no-bat backup catcher" class, but he's a far sight better (and 3 years younger) than Bobby Wilson (0.0 fWAR in 151 PA for the Twins last year, -0.6 in 41 PA for Detroit this year) or Nick Hundley (who hasn't been above 0 fWAR in a season since 2015).
  2. That's fair, although anticipating high prices is also part of a GM's job. That should have been a factor when selling Pressly a year ago, and making Blake Parker our only offseason pen acquisition.
  3. Better call in to work after 3 PM, to see if you've been traded!
  4. I don't know about WS favorite. Even on paper, the Mets may be no better than 3rd in that division (which is where Fangraphs had them preseason 2019 too).
  5. Correct, Wheeler is a pending FA. Although the Mets could extend him a qualifying offer if they keep him and have a pretty good chance of retaining him, perhaps on a discount, or getting a comp pick in 2020.
  6. Sure. There is no limit on how soon a player can be traded again, once they are on your official roster. Plenty of guys have been traded the same or very next day. (Some 3-team trades take this form.) There is waiting period for trading new free agents signed in the offseason -- May 15th, I think?
  7. To be fair, I think it was free pitchfork night at Target Field recently. Next homestand features Falvey and Levine Effigy Night. Edit: to be *even more* fair than twinsnorth49....
  8. It seems really, really unlikely in this case. Lavelle's report had zero insight into the Mets deal with Toronto, which a Mets source could have presumably improved. And why would the Mets be feeding this info to Lavelle but no one else? And perhaps most importantly, it was a very unfavorable report for the Mets, basically saying that talks were over and implying they would not resume. How does that help the Mets get a better offer from someone else?
  9. Yeah, her reaction might depend on the quality of the lawn and/or child.
  10. It's been discussed here, but any team that could use Schoop for the next 2 months probably also wants to keep their worthwhile relievers. (Or get a better future return, if they are selling now.)
  11. Better mow the lawn before 3 PM today -- there's no August lawn mowing period this year anymore.
  12. But have you tried using the excuse, "Even Yoda did not prevent the rise of the Sith"?
  13. Interestingly, I was thinking of a similar analogy after the Syndergaard/Buxton report! In my analogy, "I didn't have time to mow the lawn" corresponds to Lavelle's report that "the Mets asked for Buxton to be part of any deal". Here are those same two phrases again, with added context: "I didn't have time to mow the lawn, after I spent the afternoon cleaning old decorative beer signs"*** "the Mets asked for Buxton to be part of any deal, after the Twins informed them Lewis and Kirilloff were unavailable" *** yes, I actually did this just the other day. Wife didn't mind, although the lawn still hasn't been mowed.
  14. It was almost certainly a Twins source. It was a local reporter (Lavelle), and the same article from Lavelle contained info about the Twins negotiations with Toronto. National sources had the Mets ask as both Lewis and Kirilloff earlier.
  15. I think other teams have done similarly. I'll bet the Yankees did it after the Johan trade in 2008 -- "the Twins demanded Cano to be part of any deal" (when Cano was already an MLB all-star) when it's possible the Twins only asked for Cano after the Yankees said "no dice" on Hughes, Melky Cabrera, etc. (Seems like Lester or Ellsbury were indeed on the table from Boston, though. Ah, memories!)
  16. Yep, no way I would fire them. But maybe I'd dangle them in trade? They might be at peak value. See if we can get a couple 40 FV GM prospects for the future.
  17. On the other hand, Bauer might be overrated. Fangraphs projects him for 1.6 WAR the rest of the 2019 season, which is actually an improvement on his 2019 performance thus far (just using his 2019 numbers so far would only give 1.2 WAR the rest of the way). Puig and Reyes are projected for 1.2 WAR the rest of the way too, and they are replacing guys who have -0.7 WAR for the season so far. No doubt it will hurt Cleveland's pitching, but even with a replacement level starter, they should be able to make up for it on the offensive side of the ball. And at least they have some wild cards coming back from injury with the potential for above-replacement starting pitching, as opposed to offense where I don't think they had any hope for immediate internal upgrades.
  18. Statcast says Franmil Reyes, in 2019, is: Top 7% in Barrel % Top 5% in Exit Velocity Top 4% in XSLG (Expected SLG) Top 10% in XWOBACON (Expected wOBA on contact) Top 7% in Hard Hit % https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/franmil-reyes-614177?stats=career-r-hitting-mlb His XSLG would be 2nd on the 2019 Twins, behind only Cruz. His XWOBA would be 3rd, behind only Cruz and (somewhat inexplicably) Castro: https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/team/142
  19. No doubt Chapman is much, much more valuable! But a 125 OPS+ isn't anything to sneeze at, even at DH. Carlos Santana has a career 120 mark, and Encarnacion only had a 122 in his time with Cleveland.
  20. B-Ref has Reyes at 0.4 WAR, but Fangraphs has him at 1.4. (B-Ref uses DRS for defense, which has him at -10 runs this year, while Fangraphs uses UZR which has him essentially average. In a comparable number of games last year, DRS had him as essentially average, and UZR at -4.4, so maybe 2019's -10 is a bit of an outlier?) I'm not sure where you are getting "Sano-like injury concerns" for Reyes? He's big, I guess, but here are his career games played: 2014: 128 games played in 139 team games 2015: 123 / 128 2016: 130 / 140 2017: 135 / 140 2018: 145 / 162 (MLB rookie season) 2019: 99 / 107 If you think he's a risk to pull something while running in the outfield, note that Reyes has already played 740 career pro games in the outfield, the last 160 in MLB. Sano only lasted 39. (And of course, if Reyes gets time at DH, that helps going forward.)
  21. I think so too, although I'm not sure I'd want to do that trade!
  22. I think it's fair to guess that if we ate Kennedy's salary, we could get him for a modest prospect return: Royals Reportedly “Not Inclined” To Pay Down Salary In Trades https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/07/royals-trade-rumors-ian-kennedy-danny-duffy-salary.html
  23. There have been Diekman, Wood, Phelps, and Martin dealt already... although I guess they're probably close to the Romo class...
