  1. I think you can sum up the umpiring with two pitches. On both, the starting pitcher recoiled at the ball call, turning away in disgust at the call. One was a Berrios pitch that was three inches inside the strike zone, and another was a Sabathia pitch that was at least 4 inches off the strike zone. This season isn’t over. The month isn’t over. Hell, this series isn’t over. They can still finish this series .500, this month above .500, and this season in the playoffs. Come on boys, pull up your socks and start hitting the ball, and win some ballgames. The damn Yankees aren’t invincible, they are just another team. Remember, WWII has NOT over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor!
  2. Absolutely. Odorizzi had a clear strike out on Hicks to end the first before the third run scored.
  3. So I was wrong before I was right? The great thing about losing 14-1 to the Yankees is that it’s 0-0 when they play tonight.
  4. I just don’t get how they chose Kinley over Chargois, who has gotten into 9 Dodgers games, 7IP, 5 hits, 8Ks, 3BB, 2.57ERA. If they keep him and take no one then they aren’t forced to keep a dud on the roster.
  5. I get that this was a game against a tough lefty, but Morrison hits his first home run and a deep warning track fly in his old home park, and gets benched the next day? On a different note, nice game thread Vanimal! Hope that the date with the future Mrs Vanimal was successful but was also not with the Chief Meteorological Intern.
  6. Tough loss. If that groundout by Miller doesn’t bounce ten feet in the air off the mound, the game is over. Morrison getting a homer and another deep fly - very promising.
  7. Well, the expectations for Hughes are pretty low around here. I’m calling a W for Phil on Sunday.
  8. The real question from the game was whether Molitor said “good job shutting them down for 7, José, now who’s got the next nine?”
  9. Because I don’t trust any other Twins relievers?
  10. I thought the Lindor homerun deserved the attention given. He is a young MLB star from Puerto Rico returning home. During the game Roberto Alomar, who Lindor idolized growing up, said that he loves watching him play. Really cool moment for him to hit a home run. And the crowd came to see that. I don’t begrudge any time spent on it, even though it came against the Twins. Odirizzi shouldn’t have started the sixth. 90+ pitches, was sweating from the humidity to start the game, tiring. I was surprised to see him out there. I think Morrison is going to be fine. He’s got a good sense of the strike zone, and he’s hit some balls hard at some people. He’s going to heat up just fine. I found the game and the coverage great. Really nice to highlight all of the great Puerto Rican players, noting all the switch hitters, the catchers, etc. I don’t think I was really aware of which of those players were from Puerto Rico. And fantastic to see the players doing community service the day before. Brian, great intro as always, but a quibble on the Joe M conversation. Since Morgan sent a letter to all Hall of Fame voters this year imploring them not to vote for Bonds and Clemens...I don’t think he is in favor of Pete Rose getting into the Hall. Now, on to today’s game. Let’s hope Berrios is the focus of the coverage, and pitches well. The weakest player on the All-time Great Puerto Rican team was SP Javier Vazquez (who was still amazing). Could Berrios put up a Vazquez-like career? Oh, and Bernie Williams got fat.
  11. Zander Wiel has to be in the top five best names in the Twins’ system. Brusdar [any last name would work] Graterol topping that list, of course, with Akil Baddoo up there as well. Is he Zandy from Vandy?
  12. Love this format, Tom, with the pitching lines, homers, and the multi-hit games. Combined with the top 20 prospect lines, makes these easy to peruse in a useful way. Thank you!
  13. Great piece. I never wrote Joe off. It’s always been interesting to look at the multiple years between Morneau’s concussion and his batting title in Colorado. It’s fantastic to see Joe playing back to his full abilities. I hope this is a start to a special season for him. Which of the following things will he accomplish this year? -2000 hits (check) -Long hit streak -All Star Game berth -Compete in HR Derby -Gold Glove -Batting title -Post-season success
  14. One point of clarification...Berrios has 24 Ks on the season, not 20. So cool that he gets a start in Puerto Rico.
  15. Joe run so his hit streak to nine (didn’t play in one game, and his career total to 1998. People are starting to notice, as Marney is even talking about it. In 1998, we had Monica Lewinsky, Kosovo, the US Embassy bombings in Kenya and Tanzania, the death of Harry Caray, and Google. Let’s go, Joe!
  16. Joe’s nine-game hot streak turns to start the season has him hitting over 400 and up to 1997 career hits. 1997 was the year of: The Heaven’s Gate cult, Pathfinder on Mars, Deep Blue, The English Patient, the Kyoto Protocol, a cloned sheep named Dolly, Harry Potter, the death of Princess Di, “Candle in the Wind”, the Prius, the Titanic (the movie), Simone Biles, and the creation of Chongqing as a municipality in China (it’s personal, I was living there).
  17. 1995! What historical events can I incorrectly cite from that year? What will all the haters find to critique? The Bosnian War, the Oklahoma City bombing, Forest Gump, the Unabomber, “Gangsta’s Paradise”, the death of Howard Cosell, the OJ trial, and Toy Story.
