  1. I agree that a Royce Lewis promotion would on come with bad news-a Carlos Correa injury. Please, baseball gods, keep them both healthy and playing shortstop every day. Not a prospect, but my guess is that Devin Smeltzer will get called up. He'd have to be added to the 40 man roster, but I'm rooting for him.
  2. Great quote from the Detroit Free Press: "Never had a good grip," (Tiger's catcher) Haase said. "Frickin' grabbed a big ol' mud ball and just sailed it. Base running mishap by them. I was going to run the guy back, tag both. There would be no one at home, so I just tried to pitch it. I just sailed it." https://www.freep.com/story/sports/mlb/tigers/2022/04/26/detroit-tigers-game-recap-minnesota-twins-javier-baez/9547063002/
  3. He's "the best player in the world" until he isn't. Will this be true for two weeks? Two months? Two years? I absolutely love watching everything he does. For so many reasons, I wish him the best, most of all because of the quote below. Every Minnesotan should be cheering for this young man: "This is our home. For my kids, they’re a part of Minnesota. We can put our boys through school and not really have to worry about it. I love the city. I love the fans. I love the organization. They were the first ones that gave me a chance to become who I am today. So for me, there’s a lot of loyalty to this. That’s how I was raised.”
  4. Wild card, baby! How much does the recent collective bargaining agreement, and expansion to 6 American League playoff teams shape recent front office decisions? No one will mistake the 2022 Twins roster with 2019's Bomba Squad, and their 101 regular season wins. But 85 to 88 wins will likely lead to a wild card spot. Add Pineda and Cueto, If they go 15-10 and 14-12, along with similar numbers from Gray, and a wild card is well within reach.
  5. I saw Chase Petty pitch in a scrimmage at Hammond Stadium on Thursday. He was impressive, especially his secondary stuff. Petty is known for his big 100mph fastball, but he was striking out guys (Severino & Tatum) and drawing weak contact on sliders andchange-ups. I was looking forward to watching him blossom into a top-of-the-rotation starter. This one could haunt.
  6. Falvey and Lavine were walking across the Hammond Stadium lot yesterday as my son and I were going to watch an intrasquad scrimmage. I asked, "Are we going to get a deal?" Falvey replied, "We hope so. A lot of progress has been made in the last few hours. Keep your fingers crossed." Sure enough, halfway through the scrimmage our phones blew up with news of the agreement. One other note from our sidewalk conversation: after the fingers-crossed comment, I said, "I hope you are right, guys. And I hope you can sign some pitchers!"
  7. He signed a ball for one of my boys (who are in college now) as our family sat along the third base line. I have a big voice, so as he ran out of the dugout to the outfield I bellered, "Go get 'em, Sammy!" The guy half turned as he ran, flashed an appreciative grin, and then went to field his position. It was one of those delightful moments when the wall between players and fans melts away, if only briefly.
  8. This front office has made more deposits in my Bank of Trust than withdrawals. I'm finally of the ripe 'ol age to be a season ticket holder, and will be next year too. But if management and labor can't arrive at a new CBA (collective bargaining agreement) and there's another work stoppage, the bank defaults, and I'll bring my sign out of the closet, "Don't Feed the Greed." You've got me for one more year, Derek & Mike.
  9. Willins was fun to watch again tonight! A fan favorite in Des Moines, too! I couldn't agree more about Charlie Barnes If he can't make it as a starter, how about as a two-pitch lefty out of the bullpen? He was good again last night.
  10. Balazovic last pitched on June 30th and isn't scheduled to pitch again until July 10th. Thoughts, ideas, questions, concerns?
  11. Our family is on a two week road trip. We went to "Toga Night" last Thursday night in St. Paul, drove to Kansas City for the bookends of the Twins three-game series, and spent Saturday at the Negro Leagues Museum. Now we're in Wichita until tomorrow, then we catch up with the Saints again in Des Moines. Excited to see Charlie Barnes pitch! Man, I want him to find that breakthrough pitch that will propel him up the prospect list and into the big leagues! Great game last night! Beautiful stadium, great fans--they gave our family all sorts of restaurant and what-to-do suggestions. We even toured the original Pizza Hut Museum. As for the game, Steer continued to dominate AA after his call up. Palacios had cooled off of late, but went 4 for 5 with a double, Whitefield was amazing in center. When he caught one over his shoulder on a dead sprint, my 18 yr old son said, "That's THE Willie May's catch, Dad." Bechtold's back-to-back clutch dingers in the 7th and 9th were brilliant! Looking forward to tonight's game and the rest of the road trip!
  12. "Yeah, and my very unscientific and non-measurable, but incredibly reliable and 100 percent deadly accurate eyeball test tells me he threw nothing that looked in the least bit dominating. Nobody got bad swings, nobody got really fooled on pitches." Same eyeball test = My waiter at Red Lobster last week, serving our table Cheddar Bay Biscuits. Same guy.
  13. Hoping for a breakout from Charlie Barnes. This lefty with a big bender might find something this year. How much fun could that be?
  14. Looking at the Twins and Saints schedules, I'm disappointed that there are only a few options for day-night cross-town "Green Line" doubleheaders. One in May, one or two in August, one in September. Missed opportunities to promote and support both teams.
  15. Bold prediction: The Twins will win 25 games before they lose 25 games.
  16. Hitchens the Cat wants out of Chaska like Aaron Rodgers wants out of Green Bay.
  17. Al's Breakfast is closed but our guests could avoid COVID spread by ordering a quart of pancake batter and a pound of bacon. Whip up a batch and cook it up on the ol' hotplate, boys.
  18. Astudillo's ability to put the ball in play also makes him an ideal pinch hitter with runners on base. Runner on second, no outs, tie game? How often will that happen with MLB's extra innings rule? Enter La Tortuga. Contact, even weak contact, moves the runner from second to third. Yes, Astudillo doesn't draw walks, but in this situation, moving the lead runner with contact is more important than drawing a walk and setting up a potential double play. Utilizing Astudillo's high-contact bat is likely the better tactic in a pinch.
