  1. Get to Des Moines, Iowa while you can, preferably via Cedar Rapids! I was fortunate enough to see two Cubs games down in Arizona--including the infamous Will Ferrell game. Good stuff. I agree with the anti-Boras rants. Go Cubs! And, go Bryant, Russell, and the rest of the Cubs stacked farm system. I'd love to see a Wrigley-Target Field World Series in 2018!
  2. The difference, of course, is that since Dec. 13th, Mike Pelfery has posted a 1.32 ERA over 14.2 innings, while May and Milone are sitting at 4.22 and 4.50, respectively respectful numbers, too. Pelfery's fastball sits at 92 mph on the radar gun. I believe he rushed his way back from Tommy John surgery, and that cost him--and the Twins--dearly. I also believe he was told by the Twins front office that he would be competing for a spot in the Twins starting rotation during Spring Training. He worked hard in the offseason, came into camp, and put up some good numbers, leading him to spill the ink that he's “kind of disappointed, frustrated, a little upset,” at not making the rotation. Which leads me to believe that someone--not just Pelfery--didn't handle the situation very well. He went on to say “If some team realizes I’m healthy for the first time in years and thinks I can help them, let’s do it." Game on. Do it Pelf. Prove us wrong. It makes me want to cheer for the guy.
  3. There's more than some speculation that Paul Molitor has Oswaldo Arcia on a short leash, meaning Rosario could be called up to play leftfield, and Acria could be sent down to play left out. If so, my hunch is that Rosario will get reps in left for Rochester.
  4. Yes, both "aired laundry." I wonder if this doesn't play to the best interests of both Pelf, and the Twins. If Pelfery wants to start elsewhere, and Ryan wants to manufacture a trade for a proven reliever, why not spill a little ink via the media? There is so little we know from the fan's view. But I wouldn't put it past Ryan and Pelfery to put on their little media show, and then give each other a high-five behind closed doors. If no one team takes the bait, Pelf goes to the pen. That's all. If Ryan wasn't a willing partner in the ruse, Pelfery's desire to start for another club is still advanced. Pelfery played his bargaining chip, and then offered a mea culpa behind closed doors. "I'll behave. I'll pitch in the pen." Meanwhile, other teams are shopping for pitchers to fill the back end of their rotations BEFORE the season begins...
  5. Milone regressed, giving up four runs on five hits while walking two over four innings. Based on one day's performance, May takes a step forward, while Milone takes a step back. And in other news, Perkins gives up a solo homer to Delmonzo, bracketed by strikeouts... Just good to see him on the hill.
  6. File this one under "consider the source." Baseball imitates life, in that we get to watch how athletes, managers, organization and their fans react/respond to victory and defeat. We also get to see how players come up in the minors, prepare in the offseason (five days until pitchers & catchers report!!), and how they handle retirement when the game passes them by. The grand old game is an interesting microcosm that we enter into when we buy a ticket, or teach our children how to play catch in the backyard. These players become household names when our sons and daughters ride their bikes down to the five-and-dime to buy a pack of baseball cards (or the checkout at Wal-Mart). Baseball has a certain morality. The rules of baseball create ethical absolutes. I like that. That's why this "twitter feed" is so fascinating. Neither Knoblauch nor Pettite get to be righteous. Both were spectacular talents, who allegedly broke the rules. Both won multiple World Series rings--as part of a team game. But there is still a place for class, dignity, contrition, respect--just as there is room for slander, abuse, name-calling, and pettiness. At least it seems Pettite is not petty.
  7. Two thoughts, remembering that no two concussions are alike: 1) Justin Morneau leads the NL in 2014 with a .319 BA, four years removed from his 7/7/2010 concussion. Reason to hope?? 2) Did we keep the wrong first baseman? Frankly, I would love to see Mauer medically cleared to catch again, as a backup. Fat chance. But a guy can hope, cant he? Morneau is under contract with the Rockies until the end of this year. Maybe we can trade Mauer and Torii for the Big Canadian?
  8. The only thing being compared here is signatures. Fun article. Fun. Lighten up, guys. Happy New Year.
  9. 1. Berrios. Just because of his draft day video. (I don't know how to paste the link. This new TD site is a mystery to me. Tutorial?) Put that video in the encyclopedia/Wikipedia under "dreams coming true." 2. Denny Hocking. Watched him and Midre Cummings play at A Kenosha. That visit turned my attention to minor league ball. 3. A.J. Pettersen. He befriended my boys after a game in New Britain. It was late, outside the locker room. He gave two little boys his undivided attention.
  10. The Twins made the right choice, making room for other talent on their roster I too would like to see Parm fit in, and perhaps excel, with the Padres. I went out to see the Twins play at Petco last May. Got a chance to visit with several members of the Parmelee family. Good, gracious folks. I wish him well, somewhere else.
  11. Roster changes via trade, the draft, and offseason moves seem to create the most activity. I, for one, rarely log on to the site during the season unless a big story breaks. I get my Twins fix through watching/listening to games and reading box scores during the season, but rely on Twins Daily to make it through the offseason.
  12. Cody, I wonder where you would rank Trevor May, absent his MLB numbers? He and Polanco are the only two of your top ten who saw major league action in 2014. Conversely, does Polanco drop down if not for brewing a stellar "cup of coffee" during his brief stay on the Twins roster?
  13. My wife and I are trying to raise two boys. We help coach little league, and enjoy following the Twins. Professional sports is not just "the toy department." It is also a place to teach a game, and learn how boys can grow to become men--men who will have to live in an unpredictable, unscripted world where balls take funny bounces, and people will ask unpredictable questions. "How will you respond, boys?" I am fascinated by posters who think controversial topics should not be brought up in public press conferences. Do we really want our sports to be that predictable? We might as well watch reruns of sports events where our team always wins, or our favorite athlete always comes through in the clutch. Some very unpredictable things can happen when a popular player like Torii Hunter steps into the batter's box, or behind a microphone. Would you want it any other way?
  14. The story broke 24 hours ago? How about this story from the Strib, dated Nov. 21: "Torii Hunter Pondering a Return to the Twins" plus numerous reports of his Thanksgiving dinner with former teammate and new bullpen coach, Eddie Guardado. Sorry, Twins Daily was asleep at the keyboard on this one.
  15. Hey, this is fun. Sports are fun. Torii Hunter is fun. And if he can light a fire under the boys, even better. I like the move of bringing Torii in as a player-coach, and if he hits 20 homers, all the better. Also, I'm glad that Twins Daily is FINALLY covering this story, with three articles? Guys, did you take a long Thanksgiving Break? This story has been in the local media all week. Seems like you got out-scooped, and are only picking up the story after-the-fact.
  16. I like Brian Dozier and Trevor Plouffe. They have a chemistry that one can sense around the batting cage, and during warmups. They are also under team control for the next 3 to 4 seasons. Why overpay now, when Sano and Polanco are emerging? Rosario is also an interesting option, although he seems to be headed back to the outfield. Are his days at 2b over? Maybe not. We'll know much more about Sano by June, if not by the end of Spring Training. The same is true with Rosario. So, I say the Twins should keep their options open, and leave these two roster/payroll decisions until after the 2015 season. I say no.
  17. There's no reason for the Twins to sign middle-of-the-rotation talent. There's plenty of that on the roster already. We need an ace. Go big, or go home.
  18. There are better ways to spend $19 million. But, there's no doubt we need lefty starters. If the Twins want to spend that sort of money, spend it on Lester.
  19. I'm good with this. Here's hoping that Gene Glynn moves up and joins Molitor's coaching staff. That leaves AAA open for Douglas "Eye Chart" Mientkiewicz.
  20. Big drop for Rosario. He's poised for a nice comeback in 2015, I hope...
  21. I have a great picture of Gardy, with his arms around my two boys after a Spring Training Game--they were seven and nine when the pic was taken. It was a delight to see him out before the game, taking infield with the players, yukking it up with the fans when he missed a ground ball, looking for the hole in his glove... I will miss him, but it was time. Thanks for the memories. I will enjoy seeing the name "Mientkiewicz" across the back of a Twins jersey again, hopefully soon!
  22. June 2015, travel through Cedar Rapids (Twins A). Catch a game and travel on to St. Louis to see the Twins play the Cardinals (6/15-16), continue to Chattanooga (Twins AA) for a game or two, then on to Elizabethton (Rookie) before looping back north. Sounds like a good week's vacation.
  23. The Twins and Timing: 2015 arrives and Sano breaks camp for the big leagues. Fans pay to watch him and Vargas take BP, but leave before the game starts. Who can stand to watch Nolasco & Co. give up four runs in the top of the 1st?
  24. Danks ERA by inning (career, 2014) 1st: 4.03, 5.00 2nd: 4.09, 8.00 3rd: 4.13, 4.33 4th: 3.90, 2.00 5th: 4.52, 6.66 6th: 4.72, 2.79 7th: 5.11, 4.00
  25. not going to touch that one...
