  1. exactly. since that's the case, why have the pitcher take a hit on his FIP twice?
  2. AL, then NL C: Mauer/Molina 1B: Davis/Goldschmidt 2B: Cano/Carpenter SS: Hardy/Tulo 3B: Cabrera/Wright OF: Trout-Crisp-A Jones/Gonzalez-Gomez-Beltran DH: Ortiz
  3. In fairness, it's hard to slam an opposing view if you don't use extremes to make a point...
  4. Once he's in a position of power, he'll be at least 31 years old. Then some people will say it makes no sense to give him a long contract...or so I imagine since some people thought it was a bad idea to give Sanchez as big of a contract as he got....and he's still on the right side of 30.
  5. I agree. Also, Slowey has been their 3rd best starter this year. Now that Turner is up, Slowey has probably dropped to 4th. In any event, strictly by results, his demotion makes little sense.
  6. Just a question. Hasn't the pitcher's FIP already taken a hit for getting runners on base to begin with, if they got on by a walk?
  7. Didn't the Yankees have the best record in the AL just last year? And in 2011? Pretty dominate when you consider both those years there were three teams in that division that had at least 90 wins. To continue, didn't they win 95 games for 2nd best record in 2010? And the year before that they were WS champs? 95 or more wins in the last 4 seasons in not too arguably the strongest division in baseball. That's pretty dominate
  8. I'm not sure the window will be open any time soon. We don't know how many of our valued prospects will flourish or how many will bust. If they flourish, they certainly won't all flourish right away. Adjustment times will be needed for most if not all. There seems to be a growing assumption that our guys will come up, all succeed and we'll have this strong group for 5, 6 years or so. There are no guarantees. That's one reason why it's so frustrating to see when people defend the lack of spending by saying wait a couple years till we are contenders. First, you always try to improve your club, especially when the spending won't hurt in the future, and second, where's the guarantee we'll be contenders in a couple years? Heck even if a majority of our prospects end up being good major leaguers, it's not going to be right away.
  9. Well, his OPS is near .900 away from Coors Field and he's 6th in the NL in OPS+. It's not all about Coors.
  10. You're talking about the Reds' pitching depth, right?
  11. Or that some seem to think it's an automatic it'll happen in 2 or 3 years...automatic that all of our good prospects will succeed. Teams should always try to improve. Signing a guy like Sanchez would have helped us now and in the future without hindering us one bit for the future.
  12. Until we see what Gibson does at the major league level, he's still a question mark. Slowey had great minor league numbers, but he didn't work out with us. I'm anxious to see what Gibson does with us, as anxious as most anyone, but it's not like he's shown himself to be so much different than the type of pitchers we've been producing over the years, has he? On top of that, he'll get to spend the early parts of his prime years adjusting to the major leagues instead of getting that done earlier in his career, which was unavoidable due to surgery...and not exactly a huge shock that it'd be needed...since he was an injury risk when we drafted him.
  13. Don't look now, but KC is on a role...and the pitching is a big reason why. ERA under 2.00 in the last 12 games, in which they won 10.
  14. Nice post! For me, the offseason after the 2006 season was when I personally felt ownership and the FO were only worried about building a team just good enough to be division contender in order to maximize profits. We had a very good team but we needed some final pieces, and the team did nothing but bargain shop in the offseason. The offseason after the 2010 season, we saw the same thing. Instead of getting some needed pieces, like some pitching, they gutted their bullpen and the starting middle infield was gone. It's like they said, 'yeah, we won the division with a good margin, we can afford to downgrade in some spots and still be competitive.'
  15. More Cuzzi info. Better Know An Umpire: Phil Cuzzi
  16. Cuzzi grew up a Yankees fan. He talked about how much of an honor it was to be one of the umpires for the first game in the new Yankees Stadium. Having umpired on and off for 26 years, mostly on, I'll never be convinced he 'missed' the call. No way he misses it going off the glove while the glove is in fair territory AND it landing that far in fair territory...especailly with how close he was...not that he needed to be that close to see it. In any event, it didn't cost us the series.
  17. Or he could be experiencing what many hitters do when they change leagues...a drop off for the first year while they learn the new pitchers.
  18. maybe he'll get his consistency right after the Super Two status date :-)
  19. A good arm can be useful weapon at 1B. Pujols' arm and fearlessness helped him set a MLB assist record for 1Bs.
  20. I think it's funny that one waits until after he finally has a good game again (relatively speaking...5 innings) to start patting Ryan on the back for signing him. He had an ERA over 6.00 in May. Where were all the TR is a genius for signing him posts then? Yes, we should be happy he's had some good games, but it's not like him pitching against a bad offensive team like the Phillies is a sign he's turning back into April Correia. It'll be a miracle if his ERA isn't really close to if not over 5.00 by the end of the season. Like you said, being our 'ace' is no kind of praise.
  21. Because those of us here know more about the prospects than him, duh :-)
  22. well, speaking of trends The Twins are moving in the wrong direction. | SportsonEarth.com : Marc Normandin Article
  23. Holy Cow! Nailed this 1 Jun!
  24. Cape Cod Pitcher of the Year in 2011, right... and I'm not convinced the SEC is better than the ACC or Pac-12 in baseball...not that it really matters when it comes to drafting a single player from a conference.
  25. Do you think he will be a quick sign?
