  1. Don't forget the punchless Philles.
  2. Nice post, thanks for the info. BTW, where can I find this particular info?
  3. In the end, there's always exceptions to any rule. For the most part, I agree you usually want power from your corner IF and OFs, but special players like Mauer, Boggs, Gwynn and quite a few others can overcome that. That's why they're special. In any event, Mauer isn't even a 1B, he may never end up being a full time 1B while under this contract, so while the conversation has been interesting, we aren't even to the point yet where it's an issue.
  4. I wonder how much Stewart being drafted by the Twins affected Gonsalves decision to sign. Maybe not too much, but listening to the interviews last night of the two of them, it seems they developed a pretty quick friendship and are looking forward to going to Florida together and getting starter.
  5. Rod Carew says Whassssup? :-)
  6. but, but, but...1Bs hit HRs :-)
  7. As a general rule this is how they operate. Like you, one can always find exceptions to a general way of doing things and say, 'Here, look.' Doesn't mean much, doesn't disapprove anything, but it sure makes that guy feel better.
  8. They gutted their bullpen and downgraded their middle INF. The raise in payroll that occurred in 2011 had more to do with players they already had getting raises...like Mauer's big jump, than it had to do with getting a couple FAs. Respectfully, how did they go for it in actual personnel?
  9. Imagine in 4 years. Meyer, Stewart, Gibson, May, Berrios.
  10. Mauer is hitting better and slugging better than Morneau with men on 1B in 53 ABs. Morneau has 10 more ABs with runners on 1st with one more RBI. That's just with runners only on 1st. When it comes to all situations where a runner is on 1B, Morneau has 23 more ABs and 21 more RBI.
  11. The first AB is 20-25% of all of his ABs, a significant amount. Also doubles don't always score someone from 1st. Revere, a very fast player, didn't score from 1st on a double to the wall one time even though there were two outs, he was leading off first and, since there were two outs, he could take off at the crack of the bat. Position in the lineup does matter. More runners in scoring position, more RBIs. He's not in a RBI spot in the lineup. He was moved from that, even though he has always excelled with RISP.
  12. I'm not sure I've said anything that puts me in that category, but I hear what you're saying.
  13. Dodgers, Angels, Red Sox and Yankees make way more money than our team even after payroll. They spend it cause they have it, because they are dedicated to at least trying to have a competitive team, AND they still make much more money due to TV contracts and/or owning their own TV stations making them big money. Fiscal irresponsibility doesn't apply to them regardless of their payroll because they are still rolling in dough. On top of that, I don't see anyone saying we should spend like them...only that they should spend the percentage they said they would.
  14. But is it a change in strategy brought on by Ryan? I ask because, remember, we drafted 35 pitchers in 2011 and only 17 position players. That's a higher percentage of pitchers than 2012 or 2013.
  15. Part of that comes from batting 2nd and all the times the leadoff guy in the game gets on base and is only on 1B, instead of in scoring position. That percentage was much better last year.
  16. Only one AL 1B has a better OPS than Mauer right now and only three MLB 1Bs have a better OPS right now. But he's not a HR hitter.
  17. We won't know that for sure for awhile. Quantity of players drafted at a position isn't necessarily quality. Then there's the whole development part.
  18. 5th highest in AL, not all of MLB (12th in MLB) and 2009 was his best offensive year. This could end up being his 2nd best though after a very good year last year.
  19. We've got Mauer for five more years. I imagine he'll continue to be our primary catcher for at least three of those five years, maybe even four or the whole five.
  20. what the As have accomplished based on the payroll they have been forced to have has been absolutely amazing, regardless of whether or not they've won the World Series. part of that is that they put a premium on drafting and developing quality pitching and then they use that pitching, as they get close to FA, to acquire pieces.
  21. Slowey is never going to want to come back to the Twins....and I don't think the Twins will ever ask for him. It's a dead issue.
  22. Most reliable pitcher in April...a pitcher who has gotten extremely lucky considering his ERA is slightly under 4.00 while his FIP is almost 5.00.
