  1. Maybe, maybe not. Maybe he's just taking time to adjust. I hope so. I liked him before he ever hit the majors. I've never been down on him.
  2. Oh did he? He asked me to google the remaining info. He also didn't specify where they were ranked prior to being signed. On top of that, I NEVER claimed he wasn't telling the truth. I NEVER said the Twins were weak in the international market. Cause they aren't. I never claimed they were cheap in the international market, cause they aren't. ALL I did was say the list was out and asked IF they'd sign one of the top 30 international prospects, and he jumped in with his claim that seemed defensive. But, of course, everything has to turn into a combative discussion. Can't just ask a question. He said they had signed a top 30 prospect in each of the past 4 seasons. Do we know the ones he listed were? We know Sano was.
  3. You asked for info and I gave it. If you wanna say it doesn't count because Ryan said something later, that's fine. Doesn't mean it wasn't said, which is what you asked for. Well, actually you asked for a direct quote, which Mackey didn't put in his article. He just told us Ryan said it.
  4. That's fine. We disagree. No biggy. Is neither the first nor the last time that will happen.
  5. It is in the way I said, simply that FIP is better than ERA and OBP is better than BA. Any further relationship between them doesn't matter, since I didn't imply any more than that. And you go ahead and think ERA tells a better story. I disagree. I think it gives a better view of how the pitcher himself performed based on the things he can control and it's a better predictor too. I provided a while link as to why. Disagree if you like, that's fine, doesn't matter.
  6. No, I understand they signed international players. I never said they didn't. My original question was if they would sign one of the current top 30 international prospects. And it was just a question. You brought up that they had done so in each of the last four years, and you seemed sure they had, so that's why I'm asking you to back up your claim, since you brought it up. If you can't provide the info to back your claim, that's fine.
  7. Why do you think it's random? You don't think they had a reason for having the number they did? HR are a guaranteed run scored while HBP, walks, etc are not. Shouldn't HR be weighted quite a bit more since it's a guaranteed run scored and shouldn't strikeouts be weighted more in the opposite direction as well, since that guy definitely isn't scoring? In then end, it's a pretty darn good player evaluation tool. Here's a good quote: When FIP doesn't work: The one thing FIP can't tell you is how many runs the other team scored. So it is a nice tool for player evaluation, but the one thing it doesn't measure is the one thing the team cares about most — whether runs were actually prevented. Fairly or unfairly, Javier Vazquez disappointed a lot of fans in New York and the Bronx. A lot of runs scored on his watch, whether they were his own fault or the fault of something like Derek Jeter's poor range at shortstop. Still, FIP is a great tool to have. It's a version of ERA that tells you how well a pitcher actually pitched, rather than how well his team did. There are always more complicated measures of a pitcher's exact contributions on the mound, but certainly none as simple. 8. Well, Phil Mackey wrote: 'Earlier this offseason, Ryan said the Twins will likely limit Gibson's innings to somewhere between 130 and 140 in 2013 -- much like the Atlanta Braves did with Kris Medlen, who pitched 138 innings in his first full season back from Tommy John surgery.' Unless you believe Phil Mackey is lying about what he was told by Ryan, whom he talks to all the time, it was probably said by Ryan. Rhett Bollinger, who has the ear of the organization as well since he's their beat reporter for MLB.com wrote: 'But he'll have his innings cut short this season, as the Twins are expected to limit him to about 130-140 innings. There are no plans to use him as a reliever initially to limit that total, but the Twins could decide to start him slowly at Triple-A Rochester before giving him his first call to the big leagues.' I mean, I suppose if you are hell-bent on insisting on exact quotes, this doesn't work. I believe most reasonable people can probably take at least Mackey at his word as to what Ryan said. Seth, who is pretty well respected around here, asked for info on inning-limit as well, and he took Mackey's word for it, even without exact quotes. http://twinsdaily.com/minnesota-twins-talk/6702-kyle-gibson-s-innings-limit.html
  9. Well, I didn't even mention xFIP, so I'm not sure why I'd be required to mention how it's flawed. And most stats are flawed, it's a matter of degrees. FIP is better than ERA (just like OBP is better than BA), and it tells a truer story about how the player himself did.
  10. Exactly, which is why I never said trusting others when it came to Correia was a bad thing. I know you said you weren't referring to anyone, but just making my point clear.
  11. I wasn't taking a shot at them, I was just wondering. No need to get defensive. In any event, since you brought it up, they got a TOP 30 international prospect in EACH of the last 4 years? Can you refresh our memory on who they were?
  12. On another site, a list of the top 30 international prospects came out. I wonder if we'll get any of them.
  13. You're certainly making an early defense of the upcoming FA moves/non-moves by our front office. Preemptive strike in action. Why wouldn't we need any of those guys? Because our OF is awesome? Because we couldn't slide one to 1B (like Beltran), cause we're set at DH? On top of them, which are a lot of good names, BTW, Zobrist might be also be available. Kendry Morales should be, Morse should be, Aaron Hill should be. Lester may be available, Vogelsong may be available. In any event, it's not like we see much better FA classes pop up every year. It's not a particularly bad one.
  14. He didn't say anything about trading Gibson
  15. ERA measures earned runs allowed, not runs allowed, since you want to play the snark game. ERA is based on a lot of things (like the defense behind you and the scorers definition of error). I like FIP better. It goes off things pitchers have actual control over. ERA is better than Wins/losses satt for pitchers, but (like errors and fielding %) still has it's flaws. Thanks though.
  16. Um, did you SEE my earlier post on this thread? I said I would give him credit for the signing if he ended up with an ERA under 4.40. What about that is me saying I wouldn't give him credit if he does well? What I'm saying is Ryan didn't judge his abilities, his talent. He signed him, but he went by what others judged his abilities to be (his scouts telling him he is better than his numbers). I also never said there was anything wrong with that approach. All I'm saying is if someone says, in regards to Correia, that Ryan is a better judge of pitching than him or others, well, he wasn't the one who went out there and judged him. He signed him, but others judged his ability and he signed off. Maybe it'd be best if you read posts more carefully and followed conversations along closer.
  17. I'm not sure I agree with that evaluation, especially if some teams don't exercise options on players, but do you think FA classes are going to get better any time soon? In any event, it doesn't much matter, because he likely won't outbid (or, in Mr. Ryan speak overspend) on the better players any way.
  18. I got what you were saying, like I said, I wasn't even talking about you. Thanks for the clarification anyway.
  19. Why would those situations compare? First, one was pitching in the majors. OF COURSE it's going to get more attention. Second, Strasburg was a MUCH better prospect AND their team was headed for the playoffs.
  20. I'm not talking about you, but it seems like I read comments like this a lot from the blanket apologists in a variety of conversations...and then if (and often when) that time frame comes up and nothing happens, the pissed off breaking point date gets moved back some more.
  21. yeah, I wasn't being serious...
  22. I can find it if you like, but it's common knowledge that after the signing, and the backlash that came from it, he said he didn't see him. He said he hadn't scouted him and that he was trusting his scouts who said he's better than his numbers say. That whole situation has been discussed over and over again. Here's one: Well, I always go back to the scouting evaluation, people that have seen him, and we saw him a lot with the Pirates, and certainly before that when he was with the Padres and the Giants. We like his makeup, he has stuff, we had evaluators tell us and me in particular that this guy is better than the numbers. I have a lot of faith and trust in people that have seen him.
  23. Sure, just point me to the post where I say anything remotely like that. The post you're replying to certinaly doesn't. My post simply points to the fact that he didn't scout Correia prior to signing him, which counters the statement 'Terry Ryan is a better judge of pitching than you or I' when talking about Ryan getting Correia. HE didn't judge Correia, his scouts did.
