New Years Resolutions: Starting Pitching
TwinsDr2021 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
IMO, the best thing that could happen for the Twins is another short season, either Covid or lockout. Run a few young pitches out there that get hot and don't have to sustain it over more than 8 - 10 starts. Make the Wild card win a game or tow and look like geniuses.- 40 replies

New Years Resolutions: Starting Pitching
TwinsDr2021 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Looks like they road hot starts from Perez, 7-2 3.71 ERA on June First 1st, Odo 10-2 2.24 ERA on June 16th, Berrios 8-2 3.14 ERA on June 7th, Gibson 6-2 3.75 ERA on June 2nd. Pineda struggled a bit at the beginning and then had a decent run until, well..... If you look at their ERA's in June and what they finished with something was different after June, well except for Berrios his ERA stayed about the same. They road Duffey, May, Littell, Harper and Rogers in the pen.- 40 replies

Montas is controlled though 2023 (that is two years) , Pablo Lopez though 2024, Sixto Sanchez though 2026, Max Meyer though whenever since he hasn't pitched in the majors. So those wouldn't be considered 1 year, but Bassitt is a free agent after next year, which means one year, and if the Twins aren't competing it actually would be a half year, since they would trade him at the deadline. Luis Castillo like Montas is controlled though 2023, but if you can't get him to extend he would probably be traded at the next deadline as well, because he would have move value then the next year deadline. I am not giving up one of the top pitching prospects for 1 year of anybody, for two years I would be will to move a Duran or Canterino, plus a position player or two.

Is it possible to negotiate with a player prior to trading for him? If so, I would probably do the Bassitt trade as you listed. If not no way I am giving up anybody in Col A or B (because no chance they take all of Donaldson's contract), and currently they don't really have a replacement for Kepler, they aren't swapping contracts for Sano, and Arraez should be able to bring back a better player/contract, so it would could down to the bottom half of Col C, and if the Twins aren't good again and have to trade him at the deadline, they probably couldn't get back equal value to what they traded for him. So basically I am not trading for any pitcher with 1 year left of control, unless that pitcher comes along with somebody that has 3 or more. Last year would have been the year to trade for a pitcher with one year of control to go along with Berrios, Maeda, Pineda, Happ and Dobnak, probably won't have worked but I wouldn't have been upset if we lost a prospect because they attempted to shore up the pitching staff with a lineup seemingly ready to win.

This makes sense if you are talking about a complete rebuild for 2024-25 and in that case why not add Donaldson and Maeda to the list, because you can't trade all those guys for players that need to be on the 40 or most of the 40 will be minor league guys, so you will be trading them for really young guys that won't need to be on the 40 man for at least a year or maybe two or more (that is why the yanks traded Cave to the Twins, they got a guy with upside and won't require a 40 man spot for years). And if this FO is going to a complete rebuild, I am out on them and the Twins.

Well that talk is silly, Now maybe if they would signed a couple Ray, Gausman, Stroman or Rodríguez for example, then sure go out and trade for another starter with a year or two of control and give up a prospect like Larnach/Jeffers or somebody else to make a real run at a title. Trying to build a rotation out of FA's and trading prospects for pitchers with a little control is no way to have continued success.

solid logic, but trading away assets to get other assets that may help in the short and long term works as well. Look at the Odo and Maeda trades, neither were made with one year in mind. That is why IMO they aren't trading significant assets for one or two year players. They may trade an asset like Gil for them, but in no way are they giving up any top prospects. The big difference with MN and Oak, is Oak either figures out how to develop pitching or go out and get pitching that mostly works out and they can get all they can while under control and trade them before they walk away for more money. MN has shown no ability to develop pitchers, yet?

I would say there is no chance of the two trades you mentioned, they are not giving Larnach up for 1 year control of 33 year old pitcher. that is the type of trade you do when you are shoring up a rotation for a contending team, not starting a rotation. The other trade, no way as well on two years of control of a 32 year old for possibly your starting catcher and maybe the best pitching prospect in the system. If the Twins trade for a pitcher this offseason and I hope they do, it is going to along the lines of a pitcher they believe will end up in the pen (Duran?) or young pitchers years away. That has been their MO the whole time.

A bunch of people are going to hate or be real sad on your realistic view of the prospects. and lets not forget Ryan only has 26.2 major league innings, and Ober has only pitched in 20 MLB games

I think he is correct, it isn't a rebuild or a retool. The offensive is mostly set with Vets with a young guy sprinkled around. and the pitching staff is hope and prayer that some of these prospects work out. Besides SWR and Balazovic, they are fairly old to be considered high end prospects so you can't really wait much longer to get them into the majors. Is that really a prototype to follow? Baker was the only pitcher that ended up with a career WAR of above 5 as a starting pitcher. The missed the playoffs with Mauer (5.6 WAR), Morneau (4.2), Span (4.2), Gomez (2.1), Punto (2.1), Casilla(1.6), Harris (1.2), and a cast of others with a Plus WAR. Hernández was a misstep, but the biggest misstep was not mixing in some good vets to go with a good offense and young pitchers. The gave Bonser 118.1 innings with a 5.93 ERA Guerrier 76.1 with a 5.19, Hernández 139.2 with a 5.48, Brian Bass 68.1 with a 4.87, and Perkins (1.3 WAR) was just OK. To me this is an example of why they should bring in more than Bundy, kind of seems like history repeating it self.

What Happened to Trevor Larnach?
TwinsDr2021 replied to Lucas Seehafer PT's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Agreed with giving him some time, the issue might be he turns 25 in February and the next prospect might over take him as the future all star in the making. My hope is he has a good spring, starts off hot in AAA and is up mid season holding his own. -
What Happened to Trevor Larnach?
TwinsDr2021 replied to Lucas Seehafer PT's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
There are many things I wish Kepler did better, but if you show most fans his numbers (without his name attached) for the last 4 years and say he will make less than 7 million each of the next two years, he would be the type of player the Twins should be trading for not trading away. Agreed great job Lucas. Kind of sounds like the plan for pitching this year? -
Twins Future Position Analysis: Shortstop
TwinsDr2021 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Question, can the Twins afford to have Gordon, Lewis, Martin and Palacios on the 40 man, by afford I mean will it work with the talk about how the will use the pitching staff? Lewis and Gordon are already on, it seems like moving Martin and/or Palacios on might mean cutting Gordon/Rocker or a pitcher they like? How many SS can they have on the 40 at one time?- 40 replies

Confused as what I said that was not true? Do you think the odds are he is one of the top two or three short stops in the american league in 2023 are better than him starting the season in the minors that year? He did have a great AFL in 2019 and I believe without Covid he would/could have forced his way up in 2020, but Covid happened and so did his injury. So is there a chance he forces his way up this year yes (that is what I hope happens), but is it more likely he takes time to get back into the swing of things, and it is the next year he forces his way up, probably? But unless I am reading something wrong, he had 25 at bats, hit .200 1 double, two homers, 7 K's and no walks in spring training in 2020? and Arraez batting average in the minors is the same as Lewis's OBP.
-
The odds are much better he isn't even in the major leagues in two year, let alone an all star. In 2019, the last time he has played, he hit .236 in A+ and AA. There is no Front Office in MLB that would even think of starting him as an opening day SS after a major injury and two years off. With that said I believe he will be better than average MLB player and maybe an all star once or twice. The harder part is what are the Twins going to do in the minors with Javier, Steer, Palacios, Lewis and Martin, that is 5 (4 if you don't include Steer) for two starting SS jobs (AA and AAA). Which means they have to move Martin or Lewis off of SS right away (I think it will be Martin). So Palacios starts at AAA, Lewis AA, Martin AA in left, Steer at 2nd or 3rd, and Javier still in A+ or in AA with Lewis and him splitting some time, hoping Lewis forces his way to AAA. Also, I am only trading Lewis if I get three years of control for a pitcher, or two with all signs pointing to a extension. I don't know if in baseball if you are allowed to talk to a player, for example with the Reds where you say to Castillo we will trade for you if take an extension of ....

The Twins Pivotal Prospect
TwinsDr2021 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If Balazovic is the Twins #3 prospect and is seen as a borderline starer/relief pitcher, the Twins are in more trouble than I thought, And he seems like the somebody that probably should be included in a trade to bring somebody back.- 42 replies

The Twins Pivotal Prospect
TwinsDr2021 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The last thing I want is Lewis being the Twins opening day short stop. From many reasons, what is the upside? If he starts in AA and is on fire, he could be moved up and the SS they signed for gap can be moved to the bench or traded. If he starts out slow at he majors what is the plan then? play Gordon and what if he sucks? try Martin and all of 89 games at SS in the last 4 years, Sign a guy for triple AAA to come up? Move Polanco, try Miranda? Having Lewis as plan A for the opening day short stop would be one of the dumbest things this FO has done, and they have done a bunch.- 42 replies

I can agree with that but if you are getting a 28 year old pitcher with 3 years of control, coming off of three years of 4.9, 1.1, 4.7 WAR you trade any prospect not named Wander Franco, Vlad Jr, Tatis Jr. (or possibly a prospect rocketing up the rankings not dropping in the rankings)- 23 replies

Do the Twins Have Tradeable Assets?
TwinsDr2021 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
agree, but if I am giving up Lewis or Martin, I want at least 3 years of control. Somebody like Castillo just turns into trade bait at the deadline if the Twins are sellers at the 2022 deadline.- 26 replies

Do the Twins Have Tradeable Assets?
TwinsDr2021 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
To me that is a great plan b, when somebody gets hurt, you can go to St. Paul and get one of the two without adding some AAAA player to the 40 man. If you go into a season with two starting outfielders and a 3rd that historically misses games. what is the back up plan? bring other rookies or Rooker up that might not be ready, or bring up AAAA players. That is a plan that should get the FO fired immediately. They signed Buxton, have Kepler, you go out and get a cheaper right handed Left Fielder. Somebody that in no way blocks Larnach or Celestino if they are on fire in AAA.- 26 replies
