Has Zebby Matthews Lost His Rotation Spot?
Alex Wilde replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
ERA 4.86, K/9 9.58, WHIP 1.31, FIP 4,38 ERA 4.60, K/9 7.28, WHIP 1.38, FIP 4.33 Pick your poison cause one pitched in the bigs as a starter for 13 seasons and the other is Taj after three seasons ages 22, 23, and 24. Not sure what your disdain is for Taj but it’s definitely a bit irrational. -

I agree with your point on trying to trade him as he’d have more value as a starter but those stats are inflated in a way because he never faced a lineup for a third time and his stats between first time through and second time through are wildly different. There’s definitely a reason he never made it out of the 5th and barley the 4th in alot of games.

That’s a rather bleak conclusion. The team will lose just about every player over the age of 30 after the season. Kepler, Farmer, Margot, Santana, Thielbar, Okert, and Richards. The rest of the team is under 28/29 except for Vasquez and Correa (maybe Stewart and Topa). Seems like a pretty young team to me. That’s also a bit brash to compare the young crop of pitchers today to the crop of pitchers from 3 years ago. This new crop has a higher upside and higher floor as can be seen by SWR and Festa so far and presumably Zebby and Morris. Not to mention Culpepper, Lewis, Raya, Prielipp, Macleod, and Canterino who could all theoretically make appearances next season depending on health and effectiveness. The system as a whole is also top 5 according to basically every outlet. The system from 3 years ago doesn’t even compare to the system now.

Does Okert realistically provide any value to the bullpen at this point? His negative WPA and WAR has put a huge damper on the otherwise solid bullpen. I still cannot think about him without remembering the grand slam he gave up against Seattle to lose a game earlier in the year. Just dump him and try someone else at AAA or claim someone off of waivers. It doesn’t really matter that he’s a lefty if his isn’t any good at getting lefties out. He’s the 8th guy in the pen and if he had an option left his ass would have been in St. Paul two months ago.

They literally didn’t sign anyone (except Staumont basically for the league minimum who started the year in AAA). That’s my point. Oh wait, they signed Jay Jackson! With all of the money they had sitting around. And they couldn’t sign another lefty so they traded for Okert who has been the definition of mediocre. And they started the year with Duarte who was a waiver claim pickup for nothing. So please tell me how ownership helped the bullpen this season? Now the FO kept faith in an aging Thielbar, an injury prone Stewart, and in inexperienced back of the pen. They also let Hoffman walk and Megill walk who are both 1/2 bullpen guys on first place teams.

Three first place finishes in the division and an overall record of .533 isn’t good enough for you? With a team this year that is vastly outperforming last years team? Give me a break

How about we go one game without calling for Rocco’s head as if he’s the owner, FO, manager, and best player all in one! Ownership cut payroll. Hence the lack of depth in the bullpen. Three best hitters injured. Hence the lack of clutch hits. Blame Rocco all you want but he didn’t go 1-12 with RISP and he didn’t serve up meatballs all game from the mound.

Yanez and Perez need to be moved up a level. I would have much rather seen Henriquez up instead of Winder yesterday…may have actually won the game then lol

Because he could have given up 9 runs and they still would have won. That’s basically the whole idea there. He pitched really well but they won more so because the lineup scored 10 runs not because he pitched a complete game.

WPA is a situational stat that takes a snap shot of the game at every at bat and applies value to it based on the probability of winning. WAR is a stat that takes every play throughout the season and adds value to it no matter the situation. So there is merit to both stats. If you hit 40 home runs and do that all while being up by 5 or more runs, your WAR probably looks pretty damn good, but you probably didn’t help win the game so your WPA would show that as well by being much much lower. Same thing applies vice versa. If you only hit 10 home runs but they all gave your team the lead to win the game your WPA is going to be off the charts, but your WAR might not be fantastic because you only hit 10 home runs. Obviously this is purely hypothetical but Gleeman might approve!

Carlos Santana the All-Star is Closer Than You Think
Alex Wilde replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Fans should have nothing to do with All Stars let alone voting. We let the most uneducated and biased people decide who makes it to the All Star Game versus other players, scouts, front office members, and baseball writers? Seems like an absolute joke to let fan bases vote who obviously favor New York, Chicago, Toronto, and LA.- 33 replies

That doesn’t justify a bad decision. Vasquez and Margot should have never been batting in those situations even if they have been “hot”.

Jackson isn’t on the 40 though. Could be Winder as well. It would be an odd time to DFA Thielbar after a spot start because then you would have two BP spots to fill. Realistically, if Thielbar is DFA’d, he should get through waivers because of his relatively high salary. I don’t see a team taking a chance on him with the bag he is carrying with him. He would be solid depth at St. Paul just like Jay Jackson.
