  1. Two other things on the September callup: 1. If the Twins call up Sano and he suffers a serious injury over the offseason that keeps him out of the lineup next year, the Twins lose that service time as he would be on the dl to start the season. This is a slight chance (but think Kubel). That is a risk worth taking, except that 2. It is questionable what 3-4 weeks of time in September really does for his development. I personally want to see him play, but developmentally it might be just as beneficial to go to Rochester for the playoffs or to go home and play winter ball. Plus it would give one final look at Plouffe (though that ship may have sailed already).
  2. Are you looking for something other than horsebleep performance?
  3. I thought tjay was a reference to in season not end of season.
  4. Arcia did play cf at one point so he might have some potential. I would argue hos struggles have come from limited reps and the fact he constantly switches between rf and lf. More reps and solidifying a position and he should be acceptable.
  5. It's not the only reason, Ryan hinted that he doesn't think Sano is quite ready - offensively or defensively. That is surely debatable.
  6. I'm not against this for the reasons you state. The advantage of a trade in this scenario is the overpay is more in money than years. Twins have to give up an asset but usually more a depth guy rather than an impact guy.
  7. I would be careful to so romanticize the past compared to the present. World War II was the exception not the rule.
  8. Not sure I like this. Boston has more money, lesser of prospects coming up, they are closer to competing, and they know the health and ability of Ellbury better than anyone. If they pass on him not sure overpaying for 5-6 years is the best plan. How big of a contract would you be willing to go?
  9. So a lack of bunting is the problem?
  10. I'm not sure who you are disagreeing with here. Is anyone actually concerned abiut too much pitching depth? I think these references are more to blocking position players.
  11. Teams wouldn't need to dump salary even without the extra $25 mil. Pittsburgh was smart in getting teams thay were cutting veterans or acquiring assets that had fallen out if favor. Twins could look for guys who make more than they are worth, but then also face the same dilemma of free agency and overpaying for assets.
  12. I think it can be a cause for concern, especially if it is a pattern of behavior. But taking that and thinking it will have any impact of the likes of Sano is a massive leap. The way you phrase it makes it seem you have little respect for Sano and are desperate to paint the organization in a bad light - I highly doubt that is your intention.
  13. I think this is the worst move of the Bill Smith era. And there are several competitors.
  14. I remember this too and it seemed so bizarre for Gardy. One of Gardy's things is for his fielders to catch the ball and make the plays that they should. Hardy has his weaknesses, but he is very surehanded and will make all plays expected of a SS (if not many more due to relatively limited range). I know speed was always cited as a reason, but I wonder if the injuries frustrated Gardy as well.
  15. I thought the initial optimism was based on the fact Ryan got anything for Butera more than an honest assessment of the prospect. Good guy to have in the system but that comp is probably about right. But there are several outcomes.
  16. I could buy that, but I also think Span was pretty mediocre himself.
  17. Indeed it was. I was there. It was glorious.
  18. Yes on the first paragraph. The second paragraph brings up a point that was much debated, and not surprisingly people had a vastly different interpretation of that article than you did.
  19. The Twins have four guys who can really move the needle on a trade in the minors - Buxton, Sano, Rosario, Meyer. Beyond that we are talking about extra pieces in a trade or guys that get role players. Harrison and Kepler have minimal value right now.
  20. Completely agree with this in theory. But take Pittsburgh for example, is it even clear that Morneau provides an upgrade to their team? Much less one that they would want to give up value for?
  21. I would look at it a little different. If you know and understand the components of fip then it probably doesn't matter a whole lot if you know what fip actually is (it is a made up number after all). Despite the terrible k rates of starters, I'm quite confident the Twins front office knows that ks and gbs are good and that bbs and hrs are bad. My much bigger concern is how far behind they are in other metrics/analysis that we don't even have access to as casual fans. Good scouting, which the Twins have, can neutralize this to some degree but they are definitely leaving value on the table.
  22. My response would be that 3B and LF are pretty much the same players (and ability) as last year. Hicks was probably a marginal upgrade over Span. RF is obviously a huge downgrade but I can't see how that one downgrade (in perhaps the least consequential position), which should be partially mitigated by improvements up the middle, would drop a team 10 spots.
  23. This is a good take. I hope it is remedied in two weeks but I just don't see what role Ramirez plays on the Twins going forward. Clete Thomas too.
  24. I think it would be granted if it is proven that Meyer is healthy enough to pitch. They wouldn't want him dropping out right away and leaving the team short. Ryan said a couple days ago that six spots are locked in and one is in "flux". I would guess that was a reference to Meyer.
