  1. One other thing to consider is that advanced metrics do not automatically mean better. It is foolish to ignore information but there are other aspects of developing an organization. I personally would still trust the judgement of a consistent, developed and experienced scouting staff as much as anything in baseball. It is critical to take new information and processes and meld them into this developed and mature infrastructure. Houston no doubt has great and brilliant people working for the organization, they are strategic, they implement the most advanced information, they are a model. And then they passed on Buxton.
  2. I don't think anyone here really knows how much or how little the Twins use certain metrics. I am quite confident they are not cutting edge when it comes to metrics, but I imagine they are more middle of the pack than we give them credit for. I am not saying this is a good thing, but I also don't think it is the disaster it is often made out to be.
  3. I don't know how you possibly know how the players feel or what they are thinking. I would hope you are using more evidence than pouring through post game cliches.
  4. So you take two examples where Gardy, faced with the same situation, used two separate courses of action, and both failed, and that is proof that he is a terrible manager? Couldn't you just as easily say he adjusted to his mistake from the night before? IMO this is a terrible way to criticize a manager. It would be a much bigger indictment if he stubbornly did the same thing every night. I am not saying this as a Gardy defender. I personally want him to be replaced after the season, but there have to be more effective methods to be critical.
  5. Keep digging jokin. It is so easy to praise Buxton without engaging in any of your wild speculation regarding Hicks.
  6. Yes. That is quite the smear if there is nothing to back it up.
  7. Fair enough. I do assume a reasonably competent front office. Seems a more reasonable assumption than getting angry or unsettled about the failure to make a trade that doesn't actually exist.
  8. Here are some other thoughts on this: -my sense are the Twins are trying to do right by Morneau by trading him to a contender -however, the are balking at picking up most of the money while also getting nothing of significance in return -other teams won't change their offers and Ryan will blink before Aug. 31 -no chance Morneau is back next year
  9. I still want to know what they are getting back. Money could be the problem in the sense that if no one is offering anything substantial then Ryan is probably insisting a team pick up most (or all) of the contract. As he should.
  10. You state that like it's obvious, but I suppose it depends on your definition of "decent". Other teams would surely take Morneau, I just highly doubt a team would give up anything of significance no matter how much money the Twins pick up. An argument can be made to move him to clear space but there needs to be a little more than whining about the Twins being cheap to convince they are leaving a prospect on the table.
  11. Is this percentage true for pitchers? I thought there was a split between pitchers and position guys.
  12. 100% is unfair but there is a very low success of a certain archtype - who unfortunately seem to generally have better stuff. To build on your analogy I would nit want to fire my top producers because they don't work in very narrow parameters I have set up.
  13. I agree. I do wonder if the latest concussion will expedite the movement of Mauer to 1B.
  14. Based on results so far the Twins clearly made the right decision in signing Correia over Sanchez.
  15. I agree with this. Except Buxton might be more of a sure thing.
  16. One thought I had on Morneau not really related to this conversation - we spend a decent amount of time on this board either directly or indirectly talking about what caused the collapse of the past three years. There are many factors but I would argue that Morneau's concussion was the biggest of them all. To have an MVP caliber player cut down in his prime and never recover was too much to overcome. Thome had a heroic stretch in 2010 to briefly cover the loss but the franchise never recovered. The subsequent blunders have magnified this reality.
  17. Fall off a cliff is hyberbole, but this could be his new normal. Big body, limited athleticism, and old man skills.
  18. I wouldn't bet too much on Prince. He is exactly the type of hitter that falls hard and fast. Only 7 years left on that contact!
  19. This is probably the indictment of Anderson rather than trying to draw sweeping conclusions on a limited number of pitchers (with questionable talent and ability to stay healthy). A coach should be able to reach all types of players and the list of players that have left and found success share certain personality traits. When the Twins were successful they could afford to be choosy but three years of failure and a new generation of player coming through the ranks and it is probably a time for a change
  20. Of the 14, 7 are busts, 3 are ok/relievers, and 4 are hits (assuming Minor stays healthy and Wheeler continues to develop. The big hits are Strasburg (pick 1) and Shelby Miller (19). The top half picks fared better but still featured busts and the second best was pick 19. Win games and scout well and the franchise will be fine.
  21. Baker is a decent possibility. I would be on board if they sign at least one established guy.
  22. I think "marginal upgrade" is the bigger problem. The Twins, rightly or wrongly, want a legitimate return for Morneau and teams aren't going to give that up for six weeks of a marginal upgrade regardless of money.
  23. No, Garza and Slowey were fine picks. Probably too early to dismiss 2009 and 10 picks because of injuries. I'm a little skeptical now of Gibson but if he ends up at as a #3 that is an acceptable first round pick. I think you bounce between having unrealistic expectations of past picks to now having too much confidence in future picks. That is a combination that will surely lead to disappointment.
  24. Too early to make a definitive statement either way?
  25. This I can agree with. There might be a significant difference of opinion on what a "fair" return would be.
