  1. I think it is much more effective to think of "Terry Ryan" as a shorthand for the Twins organization. He will ultimately keep his job based on wins and losses at the major league level. Also, bringing in talent is only part of the equation, along with development. Does Terry Ryan deserve any credit for bringing in a new minor league instructor or new coaches/instructors? The minors are unquestionably in a better position than two years ago, both in ranking and health/performance of the affiliates.
  2. My other question is why do you care that Ryan gets credit?
  3. A big key to life is timing right? Just like if the Twins get a new manager and the team improves it won't necessarily mean Gardy was incompetent.
  4. I just don't buy Doumit or Willingham are blocking anyone right now. I agree with the thought of keeping them, hoping they rebound a little, and flipping them next deadline. Replacing them with AAAA guys will lead to more losses and more money in the owner's pocket. I don't get the desire for Houston's model. That franchise will be buried for years. There is something about bringing up the young guys 2-3 at a time to let them settle in before the next group comes up. There is a need for veterans to fill the roster spots. People are criticizing the Twins about not rebuilding properly, but Arcia, Gibson, Hicks, Tonkin all debuted this year and all have a very good chance to be very important pieces to the next winning team. In addition, important information was found out about other borderline players. Just because veterans filled the spots instead of AAAA guys the progress in the rebuild shouldn't be ignored. There are another 4-7 guys that will break in next year as well.
  5. Interesting stuff. I wonder what impact a catastrophic injury has on the ageing curve.
  6. Sure. But he also has years of mlb success.
  7. This was due to an injury. I imagine it would take a couple years for Hicks to adjust.
  8. I agree with the analysis, but Burton is probably slightly better than "hit and miss". Any reliever can have a rough couple of outings, I still trust his stuff. Fien and Thielbar, not so much.
  9. Some noise that Baltimore and Pittsburgh have interest in Morneau. Interesting quote as it relates to our debate: Pirates looking at Morneau after landing Marlon Byrd - CBSSports.com I stand by my prediction that the Twins will give in and move Morneau near Aug 31 for basically no return.
  10. I do not if the Cubs are aggressive as you think in putting a competitive team back on the field. They are already preparing their fans for another 90 loss season next year. We got mired in day to day details, but I imagine an outsider looking at the Cubs and Twins rebuild over the past two seasons would see pretty much the same results. And they would more or less be right.
  11. Someone mentioned it before, but I imagine Worley gets a long look and he is a candidate to bounce back next year. There should be no locks next year (unless they keep Correia), and I still predict two guys are brought in. It's not perfect, but out of Correia, Worley, Gibson, Diamond, Deduno, Albers, Hendriks the Twins should be able to scrap three starters together to begin the season, with Meyer and May waiting in the wings and combine that with two free agents. I also think they sign a corner bat, and perhaps they surprise us with Guerrero.
  12. Great prospects from throughout the game and stronger pitching than usual. Will be a good test. I imagine Kepler is a backup. Will be interesting to see how May is used.
  13. Wow. Loaded roster. And several great prospects throughout the game.
  14. Mauer? Plus a few other pieces and payroll flexibility. Very few teams can buy cornerstone players. They start as prospects either developed or traded.
  15. Well sure. If most of the prospects fail the Twins will most definitely have to wait on the next wave. The debates we have been having will be rendered moot if the team can't develop a core.
  16. Dozier is a potentially good answer. This is what a rebuilding team has to do.
  17. Can we add Duensing and Adam Walker?
  18. Colabello and Parmelee are not solutions. Neither is Plouffe. Maybe bench players. This is clearly answered. I agree the Twins still have long term holes in the positions you suggested. This season was useful for finding out who won't be part of that solution.
  19. Actually I think the Twins figured out exactly who will help going forward. This season was very instructional.
  20. Would people give up Rosario for Gallardo? If not, how do you propose the Twins acquire him?
  21. Oh I love it. And I have great respect for you as posters and your opinions (even though I often disagree). I think this is an interesting debate about the right method for a rebuild. I feel strongly about my position but there are clear and reasonable objections that can be raised and should be answered.
  22. This is a good point. The three international guys are separate from what I am talking about. The Twins absolutely should be aggressive here. They certainly have money and needs at the positions and they are players entering their primes. My concern is the large market teams will make offers the mid tier teams can't match. I want to see the final contracts signed.
  23. Correct. They have signed complimentary type of free agents. When the Twins are in position to compete I expect a slight upgrade but not to the point some people want them to sign even now.
  24. I want to see it when team is in position to compete and not clearly rebuilding. If Ryan leaves money on the table at that point it would be unacceptable.
  25. Everyone constantly complains about a lack of free agents signed. Why would you do that unless you thought it was the answer?
