  1. The consequences are 100% the point. There is no potential loss by people on this board for calling for an aggressive move so it is basically impossible to consider loss aversion. If Ryan actually executes it and it backfires he loses his job, perhaps permanently. Also explains why Toronto did it, if they don't make the playoffs the GM is likely fired, so he really has nothing to lose. If it backfires and he gets fired someone else can clean up his mess. Incentives, perverse and otherwise, all around.
  2. These guys have been shuffling through throughout the year, sometimes multiple times. At some point you are moving beyond dealing with what has actually happened, with the actual roster, and actual players in the organization, and just repeating platitudes.
  3. Good luck with this argument.
  4. Probably not a radical position to think people weigh costs and benefits differently. Plus it's much easier to be reckless in thought when there are no consequences.
  5. As exciting as calling up marginal guys from AAA and thinking they would be effective mlbers if only given a chance, there was probably two problems. First, the Twins probably didn't see themselves as contenders this year so they didn't pump enough resources into the bullpen in the offseason for proven commodities - and the one guy they did spend money on was a complete fiasco. The second, and much concerning, was that the Twins had 4 guys start the season at AA/HiA that they were counting on emerging by this point, and basically all 4 of them have been failed. Really puts them in a bind. The only real option was trading from outside the org, and that wasn't happening until this week - unless you wanted another Capps trade.
  6. I also think there was something to his new approach when he came back up that many people picked up on. Numbers didn't reflect it at first - but here we are.
  7. Oliveros would have relieved Pelfrey and pitched 3.2 scoreless. Ballgame.
  8. It hasn't been elite for 20 years - it was elite for a brief stretch, approximately 3 years before they started this run.
  9. I'm not saying they cashed in Myers when he was about to collapse. I'm saying they cashed him in for a piece that was desperately needed at the time and provided more value in the immediate timeframe at a time when the rest of the team was in place. Myers will probably be a perfectly fine mlb player and that shouldn't concern the Royals at all.
  10. I agree with this distinction too. Common animals that you also eat vs. endangered makes a huge difference in hunting ethics. Reports are he skinned and beheaded the lion too - that just seems excessively barbaric.
  11. Will be interesting to see how he does going forward and if the Twins blew it.
  12. Agree, but it often means trading legit prospects for rentals. I don't think the Twins should do that this year. I would be in favor, right now today, of trading legit prospects for guys with multiple years of control and significantly less risk/money than someone like Tulo. I'm skeptical that trade is out there at the deadline.
  13. Maybe. But those are unique types of gambles. I think we both are looking for a more aggressive approach with a disagreement on timing.
  14. I actually don't think it shook out that way, much more mixed. I think it shook out more along the lines of people thinking Tampa could do no wrong. We could go back to the thread and look.
  15. The best evidence I can cite is his aggressive free agent signings this time around compared to his last tenure. Obviously a mixed bag as far as results but can't really dispute the change in thinking. I also hope he has a real chance to prove me right too. I just really really don't think it is prudent this year to do more than add a few smaller pieces and see what happens.
  16. I think this is basically what everyone thinks. I have seen quite the response over a pretty wide political spectrum of people I know. Not one person is ok with this.
  17. I would argue we still can't make that decision on Ryan. Comparing a pre Target Field to post Target Field situation is comparing two different realities.
  18. Indeed. For me it just isn't time to trade good prospects for rentals or to take $100 million gambles on declining players. Yes they should add a reliever or three, perhaps a better catcher option but there is still a longer view I'm excited about.
  19. I was thinking more talk radio. Part of the "problem" is that Twin Cities market just doesn't support enough alternatives and there isn't as much of an incentive to take extremely critical positions to really differentiate from as many competitors.
  20. I would have went Arcia too, but he's not exactly forcing their hand either. Or perhaps he is about to get traded.
  21. You should expand your media consumption.
  22. Interesting perspective. I don't agree but an interesting way to view it. I personally kind of like methodical rebuilds that result in sustained success and then strike when the moment is right. Prefer it much over say the Padres model, which is the likely result of chasing after moves like this.
  23. I really liked it too. My thought was the core was in place for the Royals as much as possible and it was either happening over the next 2-4 years or not. Trade boosted the odds, and if it didn't happen the loss of Myers wouldn't matter anyways. Other understated aspects is that the Royals could have still flipped Shields for value if it fell apart, and I generally take the position that you never get burned too bad trading corner OFs unless they become multiple all stars.
  24. You don't think they feel the immense pressure of Twins Daily?
