  1. We could have just re-hired Bill Smith to bungle negotiations this awesomely.
  2. Well that's embarrassing.
  3. The other, unmentioned method of talent acquisition that has been quite successful for pitchers is acquiring them when they are in the minors or have had some early failures early in the bigs. There is some good fortune, but also some good scouting. I really agree with the last statement you make. Best approach is volume.
  4. I prefer extortion.
  5. That's a bad idea. Even if there isn't a clear cut #1, by all accounts there is plenty of higher end talent in the draft and no guarantees for 2018 either. Very likely a handful of people will rise up in the spring. If there isn't a clear cut #1 and the Twins like a handful of guys, best strategy would probably be to find the best value out of that tier and cut a deal to save money for next couple of picks.
  6. Moran, who would have been the pick under my general rule of thumb, would have been even worse, and the Georgia bats are nice prospects but not sure things. I still have hopes for Stewart too.
  7. I agree with the first part, seemed slightly forced based on need for pitching. But to be fair it seems to be a pretty mediocre draft class outside of Bryant. That said, I would argue that Kohl Stewart fits your second point perfectly. A projectable HS arm is the definition of going for a home run. I generally support taking bats early and loading up for arms later, unless there is a clear upside college arm. Just seems arms are more likely to pop unexpectedly than bats.
  8. And it's really not *that* far fetched that Buxton could be better than every Cub and Indian OF as soon as this year.
  9. I finally saw it yesterday afternoon. Got to say the very end was a little more poignant considering the news from the morning. I read a few reviews that I had saved and there was strong emphasis on the Vader part on the end. I think I was a little numb from the preceding events that I didn't fully appreciate how badass that scene was. I think I need to watch it again just for that. But wow, that was a Star Wars movie unlike any other. And in a good way, got my to think about war differently.
  10. I don't know, you proposed trying to equate Santana's value with specific Twins prospects, so it would logically lead to talking about specific Twins prospects. The theoretical ranking number is fine to point, but it should probably be attached to a specific player, or at least a profile to have actual meaning. Plus, I would argue that once you get past the elite and second tier prospects, it is more interesting to look at specific teams and their surpluses to really find out what Santana is actually going to bring back in a trade.
  11. I'm not sure 2016 will seem all that remarkable within a couple of years. At least as celebrity deaths are concerned.
  12. I that's the wrong way to look at it. The analysts are mostly just compiling information from scouts and talent evaluators, from multiple scouts and organizations. This strikes me as much more accurate than over reliance on a scouting look or two. And that report on Gonsalves would confirm everything else I have read about him.
  13. Fangraphs also weighs statistical output more, for better or worse. I personally put Fangraphs behind BA, mlb.com, Law, and Sickels for goodness of prospect rankings and analysis, but depends on what you are looking for.
  14. Sickels weighs minor league stats more than a Law would. That would explain some of the divergence. I'm with you in preferring Jay and Stewart and their ceilings more.
  15. Seems a little unfair to Ryan since we are literally talking about a guy that Ryan signed. But it does explain why the Twins are not in a hurry to get rid of Santana and Santiago this offseason, and why Hughes is likely penciled in to the final slot right now.
  16. But they also need guys who can pitch now as they sort through the young guys they have and try to build something of a winning culture with the young everyday players. I'm not against trading Santana, I just need more than a Gonsalves type to do it. And if Santana stays healthy and pitches close to his level last year, he'll be worth more at the deadline anyways.
  17. I don't think he'll necessarily fail, just that he'll be more of a backend starter. I would trade a guy like that for 2 years of a sure thing if I was competitive and needed a starter.
  18. The Cardinal interest seems legit to me. Not just because of the report, but because of the fit. They had been speculated on before, but it certainly makes sense that the Cards would want to upgrade at 2b and they have some pitching depth and the price might not be as high right now as they originally were led to believe.
  19. I think it makes him a good reporter. There had been multiple reports of other teams interested earlier in the offseason and he put some actual teams out there. Not signing a Cuban FA seems a bizarre thing to hold against a reporter.
  20. If it costs that much, I would want an option year. I do like the idea of taking high riak fliers on arms for the next year or two.
  21. Depends on context. If I was a team in a position to win and needed a starter and had the payroll flexibility and a little prospect depth, I would certainly be willing to trade Gonsalves. So I think Santana's max value is higher than Gonsalves, or if I was the Twins, I would need more to trade him right now. I'm not especially high on Gonsalves though, or prospects with his profile.
  22. I think Santana would have to worth more than a Mejia type. If not, why would you move him?
  23. I don't think so, vet pitchers like him have less risk at 1.5 years than 2.5 years. Different for a pitcher in their prime.
  24. His max value will come at the deadline assuming he stays healthy and pitches similar to last year. Those are two big ifs, but I find it an acceptable risk if they aren't blown away, and I'd be surprised if they are
  25. That list reminds of the collective freak out after the Bill Smith Bullock for Diamond master stroke.
