  1. Hard to argue with the conclusion though.
  2. It's a tough business.
  3. The Twins side of the story is Slowey got beat out and was moping about being in the pen. It was true! Slowey's own quotes confirmed it.
  4. And? He was a very good performer at the end of the year, a consensus top prospect and was ready to go.
  5. I'm not a big org guy when it comes to contracts and the like, but if you are a backend starter that has to start the season in the pen and you mope about it, I'm not that sympathetic. His future performance, both in the org and after he left, did nothing to prove it was the wrong decision. The org probably didn't need to leak, but he provided enough quotes of his own to render it moot.
  6. Or the opposite.
  7. As an example of how run of the mill it is keeping a pitcher like Berrios down, Urias is starting in AAA for the Dodgers. He pitched about the same as Berrios in the bigs last year and is much better. Pretty standard stuff.
  8. You sure people are saying that? No development in the majors?
  9. Not sure about massive, gambling in general has been on the decline. But growth across the country would not necessarily be good for Vegas specifically. There is a need to diversify the region.
  10. He made 14 starts in the majors last yeat. He was promoted. He got a chance. He sucked. He missed a large chunk of spring training. But he'll be back. Probably pretty quick.
  11. No excitement for the Hughes gem so far? The loser of the Mejia/Duffey showdown is going to be relatively moot.
  12. Las Vegas is actually a pretty decent size metro now, and fast growing. Issue is it's not an especially wealthy area and there is minimal corporate base. Not clear casinos would want people in the stadium instead of at their tables and sports books. Adding a couple sports teams could be an interesting change for the city. Legalized gambling is not a growth industry anymore.
  13. Would he be better than Park and/or Vargas this year? I say 50/50.
  14. Agree on Reusse. Souhan is going to Souhan though.
  15. For starters, Santiago has multiple full seasons as a major league starter with at least some success. Berrios hasn't done a thing in the big leagues. Pushing him into this role is setting him up for failure, if not injury. He's much too valuable for that. I don't think the front office or Molitor care about criticism on this issue. And yes, a young pitcher who has less than a half year of experience in the bigs with terrible performance doesn't usually crack the opening day rotation for any organization, unless they show something for a sustained time in spring training. So very run of the mill.
  16. The other thing that doesn't get enough play (in my mind) is the insanity of linking health insurance with an employer. Not to say there is an easy alternative, but the consequences of that are huge, including keeping people locked into bad jobs and stifling human capital investments (especially mid-life), discouraging entrepreneurship, causing huge harm to small businesses, creating additional problems with layoffs and unemployment, encouraging disability claims. The disability claims is a massive issue. To maintain insurance, people will claim disability. It may be legit for a short time, but it is extended indefinitely, and provides a disincentive to find work, as a new job will cause the insurance to be dropped, often resulting in worse coverage. There are continual rabbit trails to go down to find out how much of a ****-show our system is. About twice as much GDP per person for worse outcomes.
  17. #1 doesn't seem impossible. I'm a little nervous about whispers about a slow bat.
  18. This strikes me as too clever by half. Isn't the easiest course of action just to believe Molitor and the front office? I understand the disagreement, but sending Berrios is a pretty run of the mill decision that pretty much any other front office would have done. No need for a conspiracy.
  19. Important thing to remember about Hunter is he didn't really break out until he was 25/26. Buxton is 23 this year. Way ahead of the curve. Just needs to stay healthy. I would never predict that Buxton has the career length of Hunter, but I very much expect significantly better peak seasons.
  20. Screaming free market is much easier than actually thinking about something.
  21. Public goods and inelastic demand will always distort a free market. Econ 101 is great, but there is also Econ 201, 301, 401, 501....
  22. Yup, "transparent pricing" is the ultimate red herring in health care reform, for all the reasons mentioned above. "Cutting down on malpractice suits" is a close second. Any kind of meaningful reform on this would be such a small portion of the overall pie and would do nothing to change any of the structures. I think an underrated aspect of the cost, as hinted at above, is the high cost of medical professionals. They have to be paid so much because their schooling is so expensive, but a not insignificant portion of health care costs is spent subsidizing our education system.
  23. Either Mejia or Duffey will start in the rotation to begin the season. If Berrios had been here from day one, getting his innings and being evaluated, he absolutely could have beat those two out. I think it was far from certain he would have went to the minors. He obviously wasn't Plan A going into spring, but once May was hurt it opened up the competition.
  24. Probably works. But what has Berrios done on the major league level that should force the Twins front office/management to create a special schedule for him to make sure he is on the opening day roster? Seems to me the risks outweigh the rewards. Pushing a young pitcher like that sets him up for failure and increases injury risk. He'll get plenty of starts in the bigs. If the obsession is getting Hughes out of the rotation, Mejia and Duffey would be ahead of Berrios at this time anyways.
