  1. Granite is currently hurt and has never played AAA. Have him play every day and succeed for multiple months before you bring him up to sit on the bench. Santana will get a couple months, and if it isn't working, they'll move on. He's not going to take many at bats from the core guys.
  2. And he's not one of the 5 worst players of the last two years.
  3. That he's the last player on the bench, out of options, being given a final chance on a rebuilding team. He's just not worth the angst that he stirs up.
  4. Santana will go 2-4, 1b, 2b and play flawless defense today. The narrative around him is starting to go off the rails.
  5. I probably would have kept Escobar in at 3b and DHed Sano, given a day to Rosario or Kepler (or maybe even Buxton). I endorse getting Santana a game early.
  6. Awesome
  7. In 7th innings the Twins now have 7 hits and 12 runs.
  8. As mentioned, handedness of the pitcher matters for those pitches. But I think count really matters. Hitters are going to have a different approach on 1-0 vs 1-2. And they should.
  9. Going to be Vargas over Park. Probably after a couple turns through the rotation.
  10. I suspect Castro won't stay at 6 too long.
  11. I do want to give some credit though, DrNeau is an awesome handle.
  12. Mauer to DrNeau For the rest of us, after reading the reasoning of why Mauer should have swung at that pitch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkodTydUR0E
  13. I absolutely think the sabr conventional thinking has become to ingrained and inflexible. Most of what I read just seems to rehash the same stuff but replacing the names and stats, or an endless repeating of conventional sabr narrative. To put it another way, it now seems that all of the front offices are more or less on board with 99% of the statistical analysis in analyzing players. There is certainly going to be value in pushing the next frontiers (medical, psychological, physiological, etc), but there does seem to be some potential value to be captured by returning to some old schools interpersonal relations, both in the org and on the roster. Of course, I always thought that was a potential advantage for the Twins under Terry Ryan, but they also blundered some pretty obvious things that would more than wipe it out.
  14. MVP: Buxton POY: Gibson (Santana traded) Reliever: Pressly ROY: Chargois I think Mejia has some moments but makes 20ish starts with an era in the high 4s/low 5s. Chargois is called up and pitches well. Gibson stabalizes a little and makes 30+ starts. For MVP I think there are actually options thid year. Going with the elite d
  15. I think the mathematical insight is that the #4 hitter should be a high OBP guy, behind the #2 hitter and perhaps the #1 hitter. He is in a position to be up with guys on base, to keep the inning moving, and to set the table for Sano. It is a little unorthodox but it has grown on me.
  16. To add to this, if they are a legitimate fringe .500 team this year, backed up by underlying stats, it is not a huge jump to think they could improve some more and be better in 2018. Wouldn't it be helpful to have Santana for that season? Nothing wrong with capturing some of the excess value of Santana for the Twins. I don't really expect this, so I would anticipate a trade of Santana, but if given the two choices that were offered, I would greatly prefer that the Twins are playing well and that it makes sense to keep Santana and things are looking positive for 2018. I am not hoping for a position where it is clear they should unload him.
  17. Lack of positional flexibility really hurts him. And I think his performance last year set a baseline that they want to see exceeded in AAA before they bring him back. Lighting up spring doesn't necessarily prove he has solved his fundamental issue of being able to catch up to a fastball when legitimate off speed is mixed in.
  18. I'd take the former and not think twice. Winning is fun.
  19. Clearly the Royals were intimidated. Can't blame them.
  20. Agree with this. I like the lineup considering what they are working with. I wonder if bullpen usage will be another shoe to drop. Santana will probably be given a lot of rope (possibly Gibson and Santiago too if they show something), but I wonder if we'll see a quick hook for other starters. Two times through the order and fly.
  21. OK, day late but here's what I got: Red Sox Blue Jays (WC) Orioles Rays Yankees Indians Tigers Royals Twins White Sox Rangers Astros (WC) Mariners Angels As Mets Nationals (WC) Braves Marlins Phillies Cubs Cardinals (WC) Pirates Brewers Reds Dodgers Giants Diamondbacks Rockies Padres ALCS Red Sox over Blue Jays NLCS Dodgers over Mets WS Dodgers over Red Sox
  22. Grossman struck out his first at bat. Everyone who defended him is wrong.
  23. I imagine they'd unload him for almost anything at this point.
  24. I wouldn't count on more aggressive promotions. Neither come from orgs that would suggest much of an aggressive change from what the Twins were doing before. That is especially true this year, they are not in a hurry. And starting Gonsalves at AA puts him perfectly on the timetable of turning over the pitching staff.
  25. In my defense I'm only half trolling.
