  1. I'm not there yet. I want to see the response in the midterms and 2020 election before I get too down on the rest of the country. Desperate people not being serviced by our normal establishment politicians and deciding to turn to a con man shouldn't be a disqualifying sequence. Yet.
  2. By this sequence Berrios not being ready is a Berrios problem, not a roster construction problem. If he pitched even decently last year, he likely would have been Plan A coming into the spring. So instead of locking in veterans ahead of him, they would have cleared a path and backfilled with AAA depth.
  3. Meaningless budget proposals are one thing, but this cock up with British intelligence strikes me as a potentially big deal. Just because Trump can't take a step back and admit he made something up.
  4. And, assuming they all don't implode, your wish will be granted. But even if it wasn't, does it matter much if they make the opening day roster or if the come up a couple of months into the season? Why the angst over the opening day roster? They'll get plenty of mlb run no matter what.
  5. Of course April matters, but doesn't mean you should come out of gate churning through all of your depth. You won't make it to August and September. It would be much more reasonable to start Berrios/Mejia in the bigs at the expense of Hughes/Santiago if there were more close to ready or mlb experiened guys sitting in AAA. The Twins org (like almost all others) just doesn't have that depth.
  6. Depth plays a huge role in this. Much easier to keep Santiago and option Berrios, than keep Berrios and either cut/trade/bullpen Santiago. A decision also has a lot to do with risk and probability. It is not hard to imagine a scenario where Berrios is better, even significantly better, than Santiago. But also not hard to imagine a scenario where Berrios is not good and can't be kept on the roster. There is an established baseline of competency with Santiago to start the season that does not exist with Berrios. (FWIW, this is why I don't think Vogelsong makes the opening day rotation barring a meltdown from Berrios/Mejia/Duffey, his established baseline at this point is terrible). Contract also matters, but that is generally more of a marker of the first two issues than it is a massive factor on its own. The other factor, that really can't be stated enough, is it seems posters here rate the opening day roster significantly higher than a front office will. They are thinking 162 much more than Day 1.
  7. I'm not sure I agree. I'll grant Belisle, and it will hold a low upside long man, but that should be Haley or Vogelsong. You really think cutting Belisle (and possibly Tonkin, and maybe optioning Chargois), pushing in Hughes and Santiago into the pen, just to make sure that Berrios and Mejia break camp in the rotation is the best solution?
  8. While your second point may be true in certain circumstances, it is not the case right now with Chargois. The spot is there for him. Right now. The front office is not going to manipulate service time for a 26 year old middle reliever.
  9. As would I, and same with the front office. He is not making the rotation if Mejia and/or Berrios (or possibly Duffey) pitch well this spring.
  10. No chance that would be the case with Chargois. The comparison of him and Bryant are nonsense. I would agree that often the factors are stacked up for young players to have to outperform a veteran (or plan a). But they can still do it.
  11. On a further note, while it is unlikely, it is not impossible for the Twins to compete this year. Starting the season with unproven guys in the rotation, backing them up with a bullpen full of former starters, and therefore cutting loose other relievers is not exactly setting the team up for success. Why is the opening day rotation so important? Why the rush to get people in there who haven't proved anything in the majors yet?
  12. Yes, the bullpen should not be a holding pen for more than one veteran, low upside starter.
  13. I do, but those 21 and 22 year olds are also generally the really talented outliers. I would be hesitant to compare Rosario to them. Median age is about 27 (fluctuates a little). So he's still younger than that. This is probably the year he needs to show something.
  14. It's still pretty young. About 2 years younger than the average age on the youngest team (Arizona) from 2016. Average age of mlb player was 28.4 in 2016.
  15. How many roster spots do the Twins have?
  16. You are likely to get your desire in the rotation. Unless Berrios, Mejia and Duffey all implode down the stretch Vogelsong is not making the team (except perhaps as a long man over Haley). I think the front office wants the young relievers to make it too. Just might take a couple more months than originally hoped.
  17. They are perfectly acceptable bridges for a team in the Twins position. They even have a decent shot to flip Santiago at the deadline.
  18. Not surprised on Hughes at all. And good. And of course they'll bring prospects up as the season goes along. The opening day roster is quite overrated.
  19. You really want Duffey and Haley as the 7th starter? And in the bigger picture anyways, your #2 point is basically exactly what the Twins did. Hughes can absolutely lose his spot if he's terrible, but getting rocked while working on a changeup likely isn't a demerit. Vogelsong is a last resort milb depth signing. Prudent teams have those options in the spring. THAT bothers you? You really are that attached to Murphy? You really want to pen guys in the bullpen with either a handful of games or no games? And why would Berrios or Mejia be the plan entering spring? Mejia has a grand total of one mlb relief appearance and Berrios was terrible. You're that confident they can make 30 starts from day 1? I'll withdrawal slogan, this would be a hope and a prayer to start the season. Or, if you will, a plan for failure. And finally, you say "plenty of teams" have done this. How much different do they look than what the Twins are doing? Outside of Houston, I would strongly suggest they do it very similarily. Break in young guys with veteran placeholders, have some veteran depth in the rotation. Houston was an exception, but they also truly went to the studs and had 4 100+ losing seasons for their efforts. It's still not clear, despite being good now, if they'll regain tv money ans attendance.
  20. Twins could plan on Mejia, Berrios, May in rotation if they had 3-4 other guys at AAA that were nearly ready to step in or had some mlb experience. But they (like basically every organization) don't have that.
  21. But there is also a difference between what they want overall in the season and what is desirable on opening day with starting pitching depth. Going into the season with May, Berrios and Mejia as plan a for opening day rotation is setting up for a catastrophe.
  22. The problem with the national writers is that anyone here who regularly reads or posts is going to know more about the Twins than the narrative and cliches those writers offer up. However, they almost certainly havr more knowledge of the other 29 teams and provide invaluable (to me, at least) context of how the Twins and their players/farm system/overall organization fit in the broader context of mlb. Probably best not to be too caught up in small detail errors, and take it for what it is.
  23. "Take it" is more an exhortation for Chargois specifically. The spot is right there for him.
  24. I think you are reading them wrong. Plan A was the 4 vets and May, with Duffey/Mejia/Berrios battling for a potential spot and AAA depth. Vogelsong is there as insurance for a lot of injuries and/or none of the young guys are ready. Ad of now, looks like Mejia will win the spot. Vogelsong may make it as long man if they don't want to keep Haley.
  25. Don't you want a better counter than a universally acknowledged service time manipulation? Mike just has unrealistic expectations of what a youth movement looks like in reality.
