  1. Some conversation from 538 on the AL Central: https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/good-luck-al-central-cleveland-is-ready-for-another-world-series-run/?ex_cid=538twitter The usual complaints about Ryan. But what really struck me is the consistency of the 4 predictive models. Averages out to 76 wins and 3rd place. The team, as constructed, certainly has a high beta of outcomes, it is very possible if the pitching holds up (which is a massive IF) that we are a little light on them.
  2. With the state of catching in the bigs right now, I think you have to hoard as many players as possible at the position and let them sort it out in the minors. Not a huge difference if they are at AAA or AA for development. You never can predict which player it might click for, or how injuries might impact the depth chart.
  3. I suspect most of the changes the first year are behind the scenes and will involve some people being added and let go in the front office. The roster tweaking will be a little bit at the deadline and then offseason it will be more robust. Don't expect a lot of flashy moves at any point.
  4. I'm not surprised they slow played the roster coming in for many of the reasons you said, but I am a quite surprised they have made a total of 0 trades, big or small. Perhaps wise, just so uninspiring.
  5. Twins can call that bluff. I'm sure Preller would love to get Greene, but not much he can do if he's the Twins guy - they control the pick and the highest pool. It's similar to Blake Rutherford last year. He gave high demands to every team to try and drop to the Mets, but the Yankees snatched him up and dared him not to sign.
  6. He's only had one season with an ERA above 4. I understand your point, but unlikely to have a sub-5.00 seems like a stretch, and is selling Santiago a little short.
  7. That is a good point on the HS righties. Could be a draft to ignore all the previous rules.
  8. This makes sense. Two fastballs is less important than two curveballs imo, especially if it might lead to command issues. Command with one fastball and two different types of curveballs is enough to mid-rotation starter.
  9. Doesn't the first point lead to the second?
  10. Really, really hard to take a 1b only type, no matter how great the bat, at 1.1, especially with other representative options.
  11. Outside of Dozier/Polanco, they are unlikely to have meaningful depth at any mlb position over the next couple of years, and they still need a SS and C long term (though I have some hopes for Gordon). Just going to need to restock talent everywhere. At the very least, looking like a pitcher 1.1, so that's a start.
  12. Half the suspended players now officially reinstated with little fanfare. Maybe the player protest wasn't as absurd as it was made out to be at the time. I will say, seeing how this played out, seeing how players were very publicly trashed but so quietly redeemed, will make me more skeptical in the future of sexual assault allegations. I doubt I'm alone and that can't be a good thing.
  13. I'm basically indifferent about the second lefty on opening day, they are all equally meh. I just thought you'd like the Lebowski reference.
  14. You want a roster spot? I can get you a roster spot, believe me. There are ways, Dude.
  15. Seems like Breslow is going to make it by default. I can't imagine he'll have an especially long leash, could see Melatokis relatively quickly, maybe Jay later in the season.
  16. Sure he had a chance in the sense the 5th starter spot isn't locked in after the May injury, but he "blew it" because he has nothing to offer as a mlb starter.
  17. Not exactly. I laid out a scenario where he might make the rotation (all the young guys implode) or thought the Twins might keep him as a long man, but I wanted no part of him. I pretty consistently pushed back against people who were worried he would make it.
  18. If he had anything left he also wouldn't have been a late offseason minor league signing.
  19. He isn't going to make this team. Too bad, it is right in front of him.
  20. Think of all that angst. I was personally hoping it would continue for several more days.
  21. BA mock top 10 was posted yesterday. Greene it is. There is plenty of season left, but barring injury hard to see how this changes. http://www.baseballamerica.com/draft/2017-mock-major-league-baseball-draft-first-ten-picks/#xOiJqxAvip3Xhozh.97
  22. I agree, but would also argue this naturally settles into roles that we generally see and recognize (at least during the majority of the regular season).
  23. I think there can be some flexibility, but not nearly as much as is one might think. It might be something like "you have this sequence of hitters after the 6th inning" more than you are only going to pitch in the 8th or be a closer. It is too hard to chase leverage, pitchers can't warm up quickly and cool down and expect to get up again. There is a reason relievers are sequenced based on situation.
