  1. I think this is relevant. It also makes a compelling case that an elite OF defense can have a substantial impact.
  2. You have to develop players and then effectively supplement them. Sometimes that supplementing comes in trades and sometimes in FA. KC, Balt, SF, and STL have all done demonstrated a far superior model of this than this team has for some time.
  3. Good article - it's depressing to hear expectations being lowered before the World Series even starts. There is an AL team about to make the World Series not because they went "all-in" for a year or any other silly notion...but because they got aggressive and made their own luck. It doesn't always work, but lowered expectations and depressing payroll before the market even opens is likely a lot less effective strategy.
  4. You add talent to supplement what you already have, but no one is arguing spending money magically makes you a contender. On the flip side, ardently refusing to invest in adding talent certainly limits you. This club has systemically refused aggression since Terry Ryan took the GM helm, coincidence or not. They have not earned the benefit of the doubt that they will be more aggressive and every time they make the bizarre decision to talk publicly about payroll they will get hammered for justified reasons. Going out to get outside help DOES help, but no one expects this to be a team of mercenaries. But, by god, it'd be nice to have a few.
  5. Whew....good thing no one is saying that then!
  6. Great post Chief and this is spot on. This team has not earned the benefit of the doubt that they will do this. They had a half dozen chances over the last decade and the most notable additions are names like Rondell White, a blindly lucky snag of Shannon Stewart, and Rick Reed. Hell, I'm not sure this team can even utilize the "pick up the right guy at the right time" strategy if they wanted to. They have a documented history of doing the exact opposite and wilting in these situations.
  7. You want to know why there is bitterness? Because for a decade we were playoff contenders and never did it feel like ownership invested in that opportunity. Some of this is justifiable sour grapes because we've watched self-imposed restrictions by this club hold them back time and time again. Coming out to talk about those self-imposed restrictions and spinning them is just dumb. This fan base is long past listening to the excuses and justifications. I was happy to see the team be more aggressive last year, I'm cautiously optimistic those past sins are in the past. But there is a lot of built up equity in this fan base's sour grapes.
  8. Exactly, people are putting the cart before the horse right now. Until we know that both A) Sano is ready and he can't play third - it seems a bit premature to say "go to LF kid!"
  9. Counting on Escobar at SS next year feels like a catastrophe waiting to happen ala 2014 CF.
  10. This is the real crux to me. There are some that seem to believe this is true and I'm not sure how they can be so definitive on that point.
  11. That's all fine, but even where there is broadband the prices are often more ridiculous than you might think which drive people to bundle to save money. If you can get basic cable for 5-10 bucks more than your internet....why wouldn't you? The service is more reliable than streaming in that situation.
  12. It likely depends on where you are. There is literally only one internet service available where my father lives and the rates for the crappiness of connectivity speed are outrageous. Minnesota, by the way, is one of the worst in the nation at this problem as hard as that might be for nerdy city-dwellers to understand.
  13. There are many, many people that do not have access to internet of that capability. My father lives in rural MN and wanted to ditch his dish because of how often weather screwed with it and I went out, got him a used PS3, signed up for Netflix, and the load times were so god-awful that he was barely able to use it functionally. And in many other places the cost to get internet good enough to stream is roughly the same as to get a bundled package.
  14. Being able to achieve a step up from that initial slash line isn't much of an accomplishment in my eyes. Especially since it included a .326 BABIP - sorry, I just need to see him show he's ready rather than hope for it again.
  15. A barely .600 OPS is hard to swallow as "momentum". Let's see him attack AAA pitching first and prove he's ready, because I saw nothing in September that lead me to think a corner had been turned.
  16. You're content with a .740 OPS at AAA?
  17. If you are strictly referring to the player at the plate, yes, OBP is equal. A walk and a single, for just the hitter, is the same. But the impact on other baserunners is very different. It's real simple to me - would I rather have a guy with a .341 OBP that was ALL walks or ALL singles? Singles all the way because then at least occasionally I have 1st and 3rd rather than 1st and 2nd. That was my point.
  18. I think Russo is the best beat writer I've seen in this town in my lifetime.
  19. Holy cow were they impressive their first two games. Couple thoughts: 1). LOVE that Kuemper is the No. 1 goalie. He is a sound to very good goalie with the defense in front of him. 2). Our blue line is very underrated. They are all very capable two way guys with a nice balance of size and speed. 3). Parise looks like someone shot him out of a canon and his line mates are right there with him. I think this is a top Cup contender by the end of the year - get excited people!
  20. Exactly. Both in action and by how frequently their most visible mouthpieces disseminated the idea. Phony humility because you don't want the title associated with your methods rings hollow when your play by play guys, Tom Kelly, and even St. Peter embrace it like a shield against any other failures of the team.
  21. "Meh" is a good description. I wasn't inspired (as should have been the intent of such a forum) but I wasn't outraged. Just mildly annoyed at some of the nonsense being spun out there.
  22. Yeah, that bugged me but I kind of get it. What bugged me most is how bristly they seemed to be about the "Twins Way". As if it is some fan-based "fallacy" to attack the team, rather than something we fans constantly have heard out of the mouths of various Twins employees for more than a decade. The "hey don't forget about what an awesome leader Pelfrey is!" at the end probably didn't help either.
  23. If Danny needs work at SS - he should get it with the Twins. Escobar is a GLARING regression candidate that I would hate to plan on as a starter. He'll get plenty of playing time even as a roving fill-in player and subbing for injuries. He's not the kind of player you move a good young player to make room for.
  24. Please don't misunderstand, I haven't totally given up on Hicks and I don't need him to hit 25 homeruns from LF. But I do need him to be about 100 points higher in OPS and likely a much better baserunner as well. That's a steep improvement hill to climb and I'd like to see him working towards that in AAA to start next year.
