  1. These are all likely facts, not myths. But it all starts and stops with #2. The funny part is that I think Ryan did intend to hold Berrios out all of this year for the good of Berrios. There may be some merit to that, I don't agree, but there might be. So, not trying to blow your mind here at all, but it looks like you need to choose between the "myth" that Ryan was doing what was right for his player by holding him out or your thinking that Ryan chose Duffey as the only player they'd need. I guess, if I was a guy that relentlessly defended Ryan no matter what, I'd tend to think he was protecting his player. Not having some bizarrely rigid depth chart of starters.
  2. The sad part about cutting spending is that what needs it the most (military) is basically only being advocated by one candidate: Rand Paul. Everyone else still treats it like a sure fire way to sink their chances if they advocate it.
  3. The blown Houston game, just because of what a difference it would make right now in the standings.
  4. Look, no one is arguing alcohol is worse. Just that you not pretend weed is some healthy super drug. It has harmful effects as well, just not nearly enough to warrant criminalization.
  5. Look, you can't pretend marijuana is some kind of magical drug with no side effects. As with anything, but especially a drug, constant use is bad for a person. You sound more and more like you deny it has negative connotations Dave. What matters is that decriminalizing it will be better for everyone and the negatives with the drug pale compare to other already legal substances. But jeez, let's not play pretend, it's still a drug with significant ability to alter brain functioning.
  6. He's the closest thing to Troy Williamson I've ever seen in the outfield.
  7. 37 ceremonial "first pitches"
  8. It's also a further indictment of why the mantra of "let the players police themselves" is akin to "let the inmates run the asylum".
  9. This is so perfectly said. It is beyond stupid IMO, to defend throwing at someone for watching their homerun ball sail out of the ballpark and in the same breath talk about "good sportsmanship". I'd rather have every kid showboating their home runs and jogging out their pop-ups than throwing at each other for retaliation.
  10. Exactly. If you think there has ever been a player that hustled EVERY play - you're not living in reality. People pick and choose what they want to see to meet their own preconceived notions. I can assure you, for example, that Puckett didn't hustle every time. It's also likely that Valencia hustled every now and then too. The extremes just aren't realistic. Harper didn't hustle this one out because it wasn't relevant to do so. He saw how high he hit it and where he hit it. There was no hustle double to be had there. I don't think Harper has a hustle problem at all, this play just dictated that what he did was irrelevant.
  11. Certainly. Reasonable people can disagree about the merits of their decision about Berrios, but it has nothing to do with Duffy.
  12. I'd feel a lot better if we worked them out ourself and not waited around for it. Seems like a more sustainable way to get things right.
  13. I would argue making the decision he would be a non-factor in September before the season even started was the silly thing to do. It was apparent in July that Berrios could be a factor - his innings could have been curtailed then. The more rational explanation for why they weren't is that the Twins actively intended for him not to debut in 2015. It literally has nothing to do with where he is in the pecking order relative to Duffey. The real issue is the merits of deciding Berrios shouldn't debut this season.
  14. I think what mike means by "fake hustle" is the idea that you run full speed like a bat out of hell no matter the situation. I look at this situation and think him running full speed is completely irrelevant. If it drops, he's at first, hustle or not and if it's caught he's out.
  15. I'm told by some around here that this sort of nonsense is "good for the game" I continue to be utterly perplexed by that conclusion.
  16. Even if you buy Duffy being ahead of Berrios, the innings could have still been managed to make him a possible September weapon to employ. Tying those two things together is really contorting yourself to miss the point Chief is making.
  17. In before Dave blames Molitor for this inning!
  18. So you're going to blame Molitor for sticking with the reliever you were saying was the second most reliable on the team? I motion for Dave to no longer be allowed to post about Molitor for the sake of all of our sanity.
  19. We do need welfare reform, but not for the reasons Republicans typically give. Many of our systems are so flawed they don't even remotely accomplish the things we want them to. We live in a system right now built on a combination of good ideas with horrible execution and bad ideas with good execution. As I said, I think there is room to increase the floor nationally, but $15 an hour is just a preposterously bad idea. And there will be real costs economically for others, the problem with that is that we're never quite sure how those ramifications will be felt. Many a good thing has been attempted and resulted in more bad ramifications than good. Minimum wage is just begging for the same to happen without a good deal of caution. If anything, the mark we should be concentrating our efforts on is not the minimum wage earners, but the middle class. Mental and social health workers like Ben. Teachers. Truly small businesses. The kinds of blue collar and glue jobs that keep a country going.
  20. I think there's room for a minimum wage increase, but I'm generally opposed to a national one that high. That is really an area state governments should be managing based on their own individual economic situations. But we might a well make working at Wendy's as profitable as being a social worker. We've already decimated the value of a college education long ago, we might as well just dive in with both feet at this point.
  21. It's a big part, but only part. Colleges were incentivized decades ago to allow every half-wit who can fill out FAFSA paperwork into their institution. So, naturally, you give yourself more opportunities to do that when you dumb down the rigor and turn your whole recruiting pitch from "come get a great education" to "look at how good our football team is and all the shiny new buildings we have!" I can't understate how catastrophic that element of the Great Society was for our society.
  22. Yeah, the Santana and Rosario comps have to stop. They just aren't applicable comparisons. Rosario may face some adjustments next year, but I think he's already gone through a major part of that adjustment. Even if he never increases his OBP by all that much he's still been a very nice addition to this team. Any OBP increases are just going to be gravy if he can keep up playing defense like this and hitting for the kind of power he has.
  23. If you're talking colleges, I agree, but they've been dumbed down for a long, long time. You can thank the left-wing for that. And yes, I'd agree we have certainly destroyed our higher education system. It's one of the least talked about travesties of the last 40 years.
  24. We don't teach "America is Awesome", but our curriculum would have you either teach "California is awesome" or "Texas is awesome" depending upon where it is made. Our education system is challenging students at an unprecedented rate, the problem is the rest of the world is pushing even harder. And they can push harder because your average American doesn't invest in education with their children and wants teachers to be magical wizards that solve all problems for a fraction of the rate they'd pay a babysitter to watch a movie with their kid.
  25. Twins made a great call with bringing up Duffy and putting him in. I hope they make an equally good call next year to keep him in the rotation. (And bring May along with him)
