  1. It's the same principle, neighborhood militias don't work because the escalate and retaliate too far. Just as players do. Law is meant to bring less emotion and more objectivity. Whatever reasons you would agree that Wild West justice doesn't work applies to player policing. And the leagues aren't immune to going too far, just as our system of justice can be broken too. It's just a vastly superior model of rule enforcement than self policing through violence, intimidation, and retaliation.
  2. You're comparing apples to oranges. Goddell over-stepping his bounds is a totally different issue. You made the claim that players policing themselves helps the game. What, exactly, has that ever helped with and how? I'll give you just one example of how the game - using rules and fines - has impacted the game almost immediately: the catcher collision rules have all but eliminated the worst of those plays (one happened this weekend and it was the first in a long time) and players are healthier and the game continues on. There are dozens and dozens of examples across sports of how leagues have changed what happens on the field with rules. Players running around hitting each other after the whistle? Cross-checking the other team's star player? Head hunting for bat flips? Solved NOTHING. Ever.
  3. Players have never "policed" things effectively. All it ends up being is a bunch of retaliation until someone goes too far. It's not dissimilar to how the law works in real life - if you leave things up to vigilantes and self-policing all you are asking for is an ever riskier set of escalating behaviors justified by the notion that if you just get that guy good enough it will teach everyone else not to do it. And it just....doesn't....work. Never has. Never will.
  4. 1). Baseballs unwritten rules are entrenched in the idea of retaliation happening as a team. It need not be direct to the infractions player. He was absolutely using the slide as retaliation. 4) he was likely trying to win favor in the locker room, he absolutely did it on purpose. C'mon.
  5. There is a wide range of alternatives between throwing punches on the field and acting like it's tea time. Any of us who played sports as a kid understand the competitive nature and the emotions that come with it. But I know I got my butt benched if I acted even a fraction of this level of disrespect towards the opponents or the officials. The real double standard is that we expect fair play at every level but professional - where ridiculous behavior seems to be encouraged because it's confused with "passion".
  6. On a hockey board I'd be right with you, though the trend in hockey is a reduction in fighting and a variety of the goonish behavior. And the sport is better for it. This issue here is that people are celebrating how "awesome" it is. There is nothing awesome about this. It's just dumb and unnecessary.
  7. Since when did "yeah, but he did it too!" become a viable excuse? I tell 7 year olds that S**&* doesn't fly - why the hell does it now? It's not ok in hockey or football or anywhere. It's just dumb and meaningless.
  8. I completely agree about the take out slide - but I think the HBP started it. It's all bad blood from a stupid bat flip.
  9. Baseball players were out fighting in the middle of the stadium because one guy got really excited about a huge hit 6 months ago. Ridiculously childish.
  10. Pink letter was Ramsay as I always expected. Vale joins the wildlings and Sansa's northern alliance and Dany has the whole Khalasaar at her disposal. Solid episode, pieces are really moving! (Refreshing for this weary book reader)
  11. I could care less that we lost Graham. I care about the broken process that lead us here. And the fact that it's becoming more trend than fluke.
  12. You know what you do then? Work out a trade if you like him that much so you can put him in AAA and work on him there. We literally spent an entire year hiding him in the bullpen so we could retain his rights and then dropped his rights a month into our first year of control. So I stick by that assessment - either that initial hope we saw on him was foolish or we're making a really harsh snap judgement now for no reason.
  13. We don't have a better option. Though, in our trades this year, I hope it's a position highly prioritized.
  14. So either the team badly mis-identified him as a future contributor or they bungled keeping him on the roster (but rarely using him) for an entire year. Either way it's hard to be anything other than frustrated about the Twins/Graham situation.
  15. Why would you deal Arcia for pennies on the dollar? This is the team this team needs to roll with by Aug 1: Kepler LF Polanco SS Mauer 1B Sano 3B Park DH Arcia RF 2B Dozier C Murphy (or player traded for) CF Buxton The guys that need to move are Plouffe and at least two of the starters. Arcia should not be on that list. The guy just turned 25 and is figuring it out. Rosario will hvae to earn some time back, but ideally our 4th OF in this situation is a right-handed stick.

  17. I hear a cow will get you magic beans, but that's as serious as I can entertain with this.
  18. I believe, in addition to your injury confusion, you've also confused "Throwing too many pitches" with "wearing down".
  19. Neither of them pitch, that should be obvious enough. But let's start with this - you tell me how productive they both would have to be for your magic turnaround and I'd be happy to oblige. So let's see the slashline/production you think makes that happen.
  20. Thanks, Minnesota will always be home. I came back after my stint in Chicago too so I'll miss it dearly, but on to the next adventure. But not trying to steal Mike's thunder at all. I'd much prefer Oregon.
  21. They just need to adopt the same rule that amatuers play with and move on. It works brilliantly there and no one is complaining that the heart and soul of baseball is being gutted.
  22. I'm already planning to invest in nice speakers so I can crank up the loud music around Chief's nap time.
  23. Well that's just demonstrably untrue on a number of levels.
  24. Yeah, this looks more like they need to get on umpires about so much interpretation going on. The rule is pretty clear as spycake said, if they just enforced what is written there won't be an issue. I expect this just means there will need to be some clarification and better interpretation is all.
  25. I can totally relate Mike, my wife and I are embarking on our next adventure as soon as my school year wraps up next week. We're off to AZ where my wife will make enough to call me a trophy husband and I can just teach for the fun of it. Best of luck to you on that long move, I can definitely relate to all the challenges and emotions with it.
