  1. So it's late May, have we crossed the magical threshold for worry yet?
  2. Good lord, I feel bad for Terry Ryan because he's a better GM than these results. But my pity for him has nothing on my pity for Bill Smith. We're one step short of blaming 9/11 on the poor dude. Again, you don't get to run around yelling "hindsight!" when most of the issues this year were being identified in November.
  3. I think this offseason unraveled at the point of deciding on Plouffe/Sano. Everything else spiraled out of control from there. Well, that and the complete unwillingness to add to the bullpen despite claims that it was a need.
  4. Take a bat. I think I'm all-in on the Cubs strategy of taking nothing but hitters in the first round.
  5. Right, you could argue we didn't have a single known quantity in the OF on our 40 man roster going into the season. Not one single player you could reliably count on as both a solid defender and offensive contributor. Or, if they had shown those qualities the previous year there were still huge red flags attached. But then, some of us have been crowing about the outfield disaster waiting to happen for about 6 months now.
  6. The Cubs broadcasters went through a big thing like that a few years ago. It says something about how overly sensitive players are to criticism/analysis when they harp on what the radio or TV guys are saying about them.
  7. I don't think you have to give a guy a shot by completely decimating the 40 roster of guys that play the same position. This is the second time we rolled with a very young CF and had virtually nothing in line to help should he struggle.
  8. Something is definitely amiss in the whole process. But I think it all stems from an organizational philosophy that seems to have lost the idea of trusting young talent to struggle to sucess but also has ignored putting them in the best positions to succeed. We have too many infielders in the outfield and too many low ceiling veterans in the rotation. We just seem to think you can shuffle people around however you'd like and things just work out. Time to clean house.
  9. RB is right...too much still that has to play out this year to know. Of course, that also depends on them actually playing those guys at some point too.
  10. I actually think that's where someone like Bernie can have more of an impact - state and local levels. Right now the national congress is just not in a place where much can get done. (By anyone really) It takes someone who is a pretty good compromiser and I think that's one of Hillary's strengths. She's a bit old school like that. Even then I'm not sure she'll do much either. Nor would someone even like Mitt Romney.
  11. You're right that compromise can be a bad thing, but you don't advance your goals/principles just by espousing them. It takes more than that.
  12. Well, his Congressional record doesn't demonstrate a lot of legislative progress towards his goals. I don't deny that having lofty ambitions has good qualities. But politics is the art of getting things done. What has Bernie gotten done that would make me believe he could do the same as President?
  13. Except he's often critical that what is passed is not close enough to the goal. Even if is moves policy in the right direction. Which suggests, to me, that negotiation is not a major part of his platform. His history in Congress would back that up.
  14. Well said Mr. Henderson.
  15. It seems unlikely that he would both win and have sweeping changes in Congress. But even if I accept that it still turns out that you're arguing compromise is a non-option under Sanders.
  16. Look, I hear both sides saying this and I don't buy it either way. You have two options to responding to this charge against Bernie: 1) Finding some way to demonstrate how he will both not compromise and advance legislation or 2) Admit he's basically going to have the same thing happen as President as he did in Congress. Namely - nothing. I don't find 1 very likely at all.
  17. Tar and feather that man. We can't have shenanigans like that.
  18. Well, the alternative is that they could pretend they have enough for 20 episodes and create 5 more with filler. But I think I'm all filler'd out when it comes to Game of Thrones. (Thanks a lot George) I agree about the not splitting part - I'd prefer one long, epic, 15 episode run.
  19. For the life of me I'll never understand why a "fair play" unwritten rule says you have to stop trying down by just 3 runs.
  20. Well you totally misread the problem. The problem was tossing Sano in the OF because they thought it was going to work. Sign Fowler and trade Plouffe. Problem solved and this team is far better off. And - yes - some of us were saying exactly that. Plouffe's value be damned - just move the log jam.
  21. I heard they are planning two short seasons with a total of 15 episodes after this season.
  22. Baseball Ref has that at .726 - where are you getting this number? And this month is about 40 or so at-bats, so I'm not even sure it would have made a win's difference. Sign someone actually good. Not Mr. 580 OPS savior, that wasn't the key.
  23. Hell yeah. If you want to shift - live with the consequences or don't shift.
  24. What is Hicks' OPS right now? 580? Right, so explain to me again how he'd have helped this team?
  25. No, baseball has less brawls because, at heart, it's not a violent sport. The NBA is a lesser violent sport than the NHL but still involves much more physical contact than baseball. You tend to have more violent altercations happen in sports where violence/physicality is engrained in the game. In baseball, there need be no violence at all really. As demonstrated by many levels of baseball where it is played without any issues. Look, you're welcome to like self-policing for entertainment. But it is demonstrably ineffective and self-fulfilling. Meanwhile with some rule changes the NHL has all but made the enforcer (read: self-policer) a thing of the past. And the game is better for it.
