  1. Clearly well earned.
  2. It may help the deal if we stop trying to "fix" everyone as soon as they come here.
  3. You're also dealing with the folks in your party most hungry for that kind of red-meat garbage.
  4. That Huffington Post article is pretty damn good. I remembered some of that (and supported McCain in many ways for being, what seemed like, an honest human being. I voted for Obama but it was by far my hardest voting decision), but holy crap that is some dirty stuff. But, to be fair to Hillary (and she may not deserve it), that's not uncommon in primary politics. Things tend to get uglier there than anywhere else.
  5. We somehow find a way to hold our politicians to both impossible and empty standards at the same time.
  6. You're missing the point. None of us advising the team to make trades or moves are advising them to take bad deals. I'm not assuming your "trade Ervin in July" opinion means you'd take 12 day old leftovers for him. I assume you mean to deal him for good value then. Make the same assumption of others. The fact this has had to be stated about 12 times on this thread is depressing.
  7. I agree, we should be aiming for the playoffs in 2-3 seasons. That means you treat 2017 like the Cubs treated 2013. You sign a guy or two to fill out your rotation and hope to flip them. You look for Jake Arrieta floating around somewhere waiting to get gobbled up. You trade guys like Ryan Dempster (Ervin Santana) for a talent like Kyle Hendricks. (Admittedly, this was 2012, but not that different than doing it this offseason) You treat your team like you're still rebuilding because you are. Please, use the Cubs as an example and see what they did right. They weren't delusional about "always try to contend!" They reset, acquired assets, sold off the ones that wouldn't be there in several years, and built a talent base. Just as we should be doing, even if it's hard to swallow another ugly season. 2019 is a real possibility.....if we don't treat 2017 like one.
  8. Conservativism has become a huge, orange, dangerous caricature of itself and people feel like they have no choice but to stick with it even in this bastardized form. Don't think liberalism isn't tipping towards the same thing. There are those on the left trying desperately to keep their side from sliding into the abyss of "weaponized sensitivity" and oppressive attitudes about speech and the exchange of ideas. We're in a brutal echo chamber right now.
  9. TROLPO.....where for art thou TROLPO? In these dark days we could use your insights.
  10. I wish comments like Nolasco's didn't seem like such a trend. Everyone that escapes here seems to say "once I got away from those guys I could go back to what worked!" Hell, Santiago was a trainwreck at first because they were trying to force him to do something different too. I hope Falvey brings an attitude of playing to player strengths rather than trying to turn everyone into who we want them to be come hell or high water. Even if that hasn't been the intent, enough players now for a long enough time, have sure seemed to feel that way.
  11. As much as the Arizona paper was arguing that Trump was unfit, they also had a number of complimentary things to say about Clinton. That's a positive. It's sad how well the Trump supporters have already laid the groundwork for blaming those that have defected for his (hopeful) defeat. There could have been a real moment to look in the mirror that we'll never have. And, make no mistake, this country needs a conservative/fiscal balance in the conversation. But we also need a sane one.
  12. It may save a lot of hassle around here if we all just assume that people want fair value unless indicated otherwise.
  13. Yup, in other words, recognize you are still in a rebuilding phase and act like it. It's a bitter pill to swallow, but also the right pill to swallow.
  14. Skepticism I understand. But we gotta trust this new guy. If he flops with his trades and signings, we're screwed whether we take a rebuilding or push hard approach. At the end of the day, any tactic we take requires him to push the right buttons. As I said in the other thread, I'm just pushing my chips in on what is most probable for success as soon as possible.
  15. If you're bad and you decide that you won't give up peak value players like Dozier and Santana out of fear you'll be worse, I find that terrible asset management. We've bottomed out the fan base, we've bottomed out the record, it's time to be smart and realize what it's going to take to turn this around. And if this offseason had some bounty of pitching that was literally overflowing and the market had all sorts of options to help our pitching, then MAYBE I'd consider that. But it doesn't. The FA crop is god awful both in top end talent an in depth. Trade options are going to have ludicrious prices on them from the demand and lack of supply. Hanging on to Santana now is like the Hughes extension. It's blindly believing something that is a mirage (our chances in 2017) should lead you to invest rather than maximize value. The combination of Ervin's age, contract, and performance coupled with the options available in the offseason should spell out a pretty simple gameplan: shop him.
  16. So the chicks are digging baseball again huh?
  17. One versus Zero is still a terrible team. 8 versus 9 is still a terrible team. It's going to take us some time to fix the pitching staff, more time than Ervin has as a Twin. This has sell high or regret it later written all over it.
  18. Ervin Santana would be head and shoulders the best pitcher available in FA. If the list up thread doesn't slap you as a giant neon sign saying "shop him!", I'm not sure what will. Pitching will be going for premium prices this offseason, in terms of money and available talent in trades. Get in on that.
  19. Then I'm not sure what you're disagreeing with. You agree with me he should be shopped this offseason and evaluate from there what is available.
  20. I use those side links as a gauge for activity and click on them often as well.
  21. I thought the tax return exchange was where Clinton was probably at her best. And Trump's retort that he didn't pay taxes makes him "smart" was horrifically stupid. I was a bit surprised she didn't pivot that into her loophole closing angle, but either way it was well done. She absolutely nailed that point home.
  22. I thought Clinton looked good. She was composed, sharp, and knew her stuff which made Trump look worse by contrast. She basically did exactly what she needed to.
  23. You realize "relatively solid" relevant to other defensive metrics is a pretty low bar right? I don't rely on traditional stats and prefer a variety of metrics (including the ones you suggest ), but I don't prop WAR on such a pedastal as is commonly done.
