  1. He comes out and the first question is "Is he liberal enough" and not "can he win" = why we are likely to get four more years of Trump.
  2. Handing a homeless vet $5 might be enough to pat yourself on the back too but it doesn't fix the problem. What you and Smerf are suggesting is a patch, it's not a fix. Also, I believe that economically a student loan bailout (and subsequent reworking of the system to prevent it from happening again) would help fix a number of economic issues. Far more than, say, 2 trillion going to rich people. It would help many families pay for child care and health care. And it's not a long term social cost. It's one time, wipe the slate clean, start over. It's essentially a nation-wide bankruptcy. Or, like I keep saying, let people declare bankruptcy like we do ALL OTHER FREAKING TIMES!!!!!
  3. Taking back the Trump tax cuts would pay for it and it would be a one time expense. I would bail out everyone as part of a total reworking of the system. It's the government righting a wrong they caused. I'll survive without it, but the next generation of kids may not.
  4. For some people, on this issue, they aren't capable of walking. Just to stick with your analogy. We have a system of price gouging, massive loans (which are not possible in anything but this), and no bankruptcy all combined to cause a unique problem. It's not a solution I love either, but the economic benefit we would get for this cost would be tremendous. Again, there is simply no reason why a 17 year old, with no collateral, should be able to take out 10s of thousands (much less hundreds), and have no recourse later. That's just not wise. And for many people 30k off their loans changes nothing on a daily basis.
  5. Because the root problem remains. And 30,000 off of a loan you are only paying the interest on every month doesn't change the day to day problem for anyone either.
  6. Beto is the best candidate to enter since Klobuchar. He's a guy that could actually win.
  7. That sucks for you and I appreciate how you did this the right way, but I would have too had I been given the kind of instruction I needed. My parents were not college graduates, my school was so small we didn't even have a functional guidance counselor, and I had no concept of what was going on. I was 17. For most people it isn't absolving them of a mistake as much as freeing them from a system they got sucked into. Unfortunately, I think partial solutions won't work to solve the problem. Or hell, just let me declare bankruptcy on them. I'll take responsibility for it, deal with the consequences. Giving me no options or some partial forgiveness is not a solution.
  8. I'm not going to disagree that there are people that abused the loan system for dumb, frivolous choices. But not all people. Some of us just grew up in tiny towns and were given no guidance at all as dumb 17 year olds. We were told how much money we'd make and never taught to worry about those financials. Now, my wife and I are in no danger with our loans, but they do trample on our lifestyle choices. You know what I'd do in a heartbeat? I'd take the credit hit to declare bankruptcy on them, remove my ignorant choices as a know nothing kid, and build back my credit. Same way we allow all sorts of people to undo dumb or failed choices. As a responsible adult, I'll have my credit score back up to near perfect in no time and I won't have a yoke around my neck from being stupid, a kid, and forced to make huge, long term financial decisions. The simple truth is that 17/18 year olds should not be making 100k decisions. Very few of them have the training and understanding of the system for that. While many kids double-screwed themselves, the system itself has screwed pretty much all of us that went to college. The system should correct the mistake with massive loan forgiveness, do away with the loan system for but a few, and come down HARD on the universities that have grown fat off of dumb kids.
  9. Roster expansion now sounds set in stone for next year too.
  10. I do think it would be a tremendously smart thing politically and economically.
  11. On Paradis (who has major concerns of his own FWIW) I agree. But paying 5-10 million for guys that are as good as Nick Easton does not interest me. This draft is deep at OL, DL, TE, and Safety. All needs, we can make this work in the draft. Let's hope we have a trade coming soon.
  12. You could always count on them as the "Well, they have nothing, I'll build them up!" team. Guess that's the Giants now? Not sure.
  13. Cult-like is probably right about college. Many of us were hammered on that point in high school - higher wages, "have to go to college", taking tests for it, taking classes for it, etc. It's only gotten worse, now many schools (including my own) use programs like AVID that hammer college readiness to kids in kindergarten. This problem is only going to get worse unfortunately.
  14. Browns look really good and they are about to sign Earl Thomas. That team could be a legit contender.
  15. Neither of them acted well. And several players are siding with the taunts being racist. The dude's twitter also says Westbrook should "go back where he came from" Paying for a seat doesn't entitle you to act like an *******. No human being is perfect when taunted and Westbrook should've just had the guy removed and not taken it into his own hands. But we use "who started it" in a legal sense all the time. It might feel elementary school, but it matters.
  16. From Fangraphs: The individual weights for home runs, walks/HBP, and strikeouts are based on the relative values of those actions with respect to run prevention. The constant is what puts it on scale with ERA. The multipliers are value driven. And that is different than calculating ERA or OBP. There are no multipliers or value adjustments. (And, before some new tangent arrives, I'm not saying that makes the stat lesser. It just makes it some degree more subjective)
  17. FIP has more subjectivity than, say, OBP. It's about the levels, stats like WAR and a few others certainly have a higher component than many others. Basically, any "value" stats are going to be more subjective than others.
  18. Westbrook probably wasn't being rational. He shouldn't have said that. He also shouldn't have dealt with that clown at all. He should've been tossed and I hope whatever lawsuit he brings he ends up paying the legal fees for Westbrook.
  19. Right, the Hollywood focus is going to be the wrong angle. The colleges were all to willing. The best they can say is that they are utter morons. And they might be that for how ridiculous this is on a number of fronts, but we have a ton of corruption going on with colleges and much of it surrounds athletics. Might be time to just do away with that connection. Or divide the academics and athletics much more cleanly.
  20. I'm just saying, there is nothing about college right now that's not broken. Some things have been broken a long time, we've just found some interesting ways to make it worse.
  21. Yup, broken.
  22. This is what college is in our country. Something rich spoiled kids bribe people for so they can go and party and enjoy sports experiences. Ugh. Said it before, I'll say it again - time to blow the whole thing up. It's beyond broken.
  23. 9M a season is what I predicted in my little write-up too. I don't know how the Denver coaches that are on our staff now felt about him, maybe that crossed him off the board. At this point, Waynes needs to be dealt and two of the top three picks have got to go to the OL. That or I hope a trade is in the works. (A couple decent OL have moved that way for low draft compensation)
  24. OL is going to be rough, the Packers just gave 4/28 to a bad lineman.
