  1. There is no doubt that the Red Sox paid a huge amount for Sale but this is Dombrowski doing what he does best. He acquires elite players in these deals and despite continual warnings of depleted farm systems and impending crash due to old and aging players his teams are continually competitive and winning 90+ games/season and division crowns. Just to put this into perspective - We had these same discussions about Dombrowski and the Tigers back when BYTO started in 2006. Since then the Tigers have had 2 losing seasons and have been one of the top teams over that time frame. Their impending doom never happened. If you are going to make these deals then get elite guys like Sale. btw - David Price had a great year unless of course you are only capable of evaluating a SP by ERA.
  2. The frustrating thing about the Carrier deal isn't that over half the jobs are still lost (it's baffling at the positive press this is getting) but rather that it is a special deal given to a particular company for the reason of getting positive press. This crony capitalism is ironic given that he has railed so hard on politicians, lobbyists and their entanglements of special deals.
  3. If you are suggesting changing roles of players around then you need a plan even if you aren't the GM.
  4. Durant played 9 seasons in OKC/SEA. Those are the 9 seasons that the CBA gives a huge advantage to the original team and few stars have left during those years. KAT is in year 2. Even Boogie and Anthony Davis are locked into long term contracts on historically awful teams. If the Wolves are still where those teams are in KAT's year 5/6 then you should be concerned (and sad). As far as I can tell you don't actually have a plan and simply want to see change for the sake of change. This season is frustrating as hell but this is exactly what happens on young and rebuilding teams. You don't just start making changes helter skelter and hoping something will magically click. You can't complain about the defense and take out the best defender and replace him with a poor defender.
  5. The Wolves core is full of 2nd and 3rd year players as are many of the role players. They are very talented but these are the kind of growing pains that teams in all sports endure when they are almost entirely made up of young players. I am not surprised that these players are not good defenders yet. Their offensive skills are barely even developed yet and that is why they were picked. the Wolves aren't getting calls on Dieng because he is an asset to the Wolves as a 4. Even if it isn't his ideal position, he is by far their best current option. But it is another issue for the Wolves defense if he is struggling on perimeter defense. Ironically you are in favor of putting in Tyus who is a far worse defender than either Rubio or Dunn. KAT's window for resigning is not closing unless the new CBA takes away the big advantage that current teams have in resigning players.
  6. Danny Santana to everyone's dislike is actually the exact player that makes Vargas/Park DH/backup/platoon a possibility possible though. If only he wasn't so mediocre in day to day play at most everything.
  7. One nagging injury that requires a starter to sit out for a day or two and there is no backup available during a game. This is the reality of MLB baseball. I can almost guarantee that the Twins will not use a 1B only player at DH and a 1B only backup on the bench. One of those guys needs to play somewhere else in the field even if it isn't well.
  8. Actually there is pressure. It is very difficult to match team need, trade chip availability and willingness to make the big trade for a player at a specific position. The Dodgers are that match and it is unknown if another team will match up before next offseason at which point he will be a one year rental player. In addition to that Dozier is notorious for being streaky. He could have a cold start and his value could be lower at the deadline even if his overall yearly stat line ends up at 3-4 WAR. But the Twins have to get a good deal for him. They can't just auction him off and take the best deal. Deleon and Bellinger would be a great deal because at the end of the day this is going to look like a more prospect rich version of the Span trade (Dozier is a better player). That one of course didn't work out but getting two top prospects would be great to balance the risk.
  9. I would be very surprised if the Twins had a bench that consisted of a backup OF'er, utility IF'er, a backup catcher and a platoon DH/1B. I could see a possibility of a Palka type (instead of a 1B man) that can at least play the OF in this scenario but the team would have very little positional bench flexibility with your proposal. I think Vargas will be the DH but he will have to at a minimum not lose the role to Park in spring training. Both players have options so I don't necessarily see Park being the favorite because they have to see what they have in him. This FO is under no pressure to validate that signing.
  10. The talent is there but the consistency isn't. After the hot start from 3 to start the year they have gone ice cold. Some like to point to Rubio as the problem but I still think it is Dieng starting at the 4. He would be a much better option as backup C on this team even if he is more than talented enough to be a starting C in this league. The bench also sucks (and it is improved from last year).
  11. I started watching Shooter on Netflix. It is similar to the movie but so far better. It won't be great but it is great for what it is (an action movie/show for guys).
  12. I think it is poor diplomatic relations to celebrate it as president when a country as a whole still views him favorably and are mourning his death. Obama's statement never praises him but shows him respect and doesn't create any bumps in the road to continued relations. Trump's statement makes it difficult for them to sit down and talk about stuff in the future. Kind of odd that a 'great negotiator' would do that.
  13. I doubt Gattis will catch much so yeah McCann will be catching. How about looking at this in a vacuum of where a team is at? I can't understand taking McCann in any situation (contracts and traded prospects remain the same) over Castro if they play 100+ games at catcher. The Astros chose differently though. I asked because I felt that I was missing something.
  14. Why not increase Jones's role to 15-20 minutes/gm to see if he can sustain this type of performance more than a handful of games?
  15. Imo it doesn't really matter if there is a draft or the pool system as there is now. The only real complaint now is that there aren't strong enough penalties for exceeding the allotted pool amount. And once you go over by a little then it is in the team's best interests to go over by A LOT. Internationally I prefer a bonus pools as long as they can prevent teams from exceeding them.
  16. I have already seen one post on FB praising Trump's response to Castro's death and criticizing Obama's. Not to turn this into a political thread but I find Trump's opinion of Castro to be fair but Obama's response to be the better one. The ending of sanctions/embargos/Cuba hate was long overdue and I am glad that step was taken during the last presidency. They might have been an enemy once but they have been a desperately poor and a non-threat for a long time. There was no reason not to open things up a long time ago.
  17. Because just a week or two ago the Wolves looked like a successful 3 pt shooting team but since then they have been bricking it. Let's see him sustain this level for a little longer than a handful of games. Jones is making a good case for the backup PG role over Dunn though. He seems like a great disrupter/energy guy to bring in with the 2nd team which lacks any sort of go to guy.
  18. The credibility of a writer seems low when a trade proposal includes mediocre and not cheap starter AND a player that may or may not come back from injuries to be a useful pitcher. At this point I can't imagine either of those players having positive trade value. This almost seems like a different version (high priced mediocre) of the Duensing rule. There is definitely some talent in those trade packages.
  19. Let's pump the brakes a little.
  20. It was kind of unfortunate timing for this article since it was published the day of the Castro signing but it is a pretty good article. After the Castro signing I think the Twins are in a solid place with their catching depth. Castro will be the starter and Garver or Murphy will compete for the backup position. If either plays well then Castro's playing time could be reduced from 75% of the starts down to 60%. Garver certainly has the upside of being an average or better catcher though which hasn't been said (or even considered) about any catcher since Mauer moved. He has potential with the bat and the reviews of his defense are mixed. I wish he had caught more games during his development though.
  21. I see Grossman as Gene Larkin. He isn't great but that is why he is a bench bat. And I can definitely live with a .350 OBP and a little pop from a backup. I am of the opinion that a player like Palka should be up in a starting role or in the minors until a starting role opens up. It doesn't bother me if Grossman sits for 4 or 5 straight days with just 1 PH appearance. He isn't developing whereas the younger bats need playing time.
  22. That is an odd rule about age. My only rule close to that is no students. I just don't care what Taiwanese teenagers are up to and I don't want 100's of them on FB. I am trying to think if I have friends I wouldn't be willing to grab a beer with. Not any I can think of but I have fellow bloggers/travelers that I haven't met but know of. Some of these have turned into great online friends while others I still don't know at all. The best rule (if possible) would be to ignore all politics and controversial stuff. The unbelievable stupidity of this thread topic has not allowed me to do that for the last 6 months though. And it hasn't been pleasant. Of course the whole election sucked for daily life even abroad.
  23. This sounds great in theory but I have been able to see so many wedding, children and other daily moments of friends that I have lost contact with over the years because of FB. I wouldn't trade that for the downsides. I even enjoy seeing Dave's shenanighans but that might just be the masochist in me. but I understand wanting to stay away from the online world. I piss away so much time online. I sort of have an online business though and it requires work online of course.
  24. I think fangraphs article title nails this trade. the teams traded upside and downside. I think Segura isn't quite as good as his 2013/2016 numbers but he certainly isn't as bad as the years when he dealt with injury and personal issues. Walker is unrealized potential. He could be awesome or...
  25. This goes off on a bit of a tangent but if there is money to be made then when will these fake news sites start being sued for libel. I don't think it is realistic since these sites operate in the shadows but it is a possibility. I am all for naming and shaming the owners though.
