  1. RP'ers with low K/9 rates and 4+ ERA's don't have a lot of value beyond being a warm body that doesn't kill the team. Swarzak might have been outstanding last year but most would attribute that to luck. He is much better than Eyre or Bass or most of the long men that the Twins have had. Pino will be back for the DH'er in a couple of weeks and in September.
  2. Who? Hicks? Rosario? Buxton? Hicks is the only one that is even an option this year imo.
  3. Willy is different than the rest of the players on this list. He is actually a decent MLB player. KC isn't bad but the Twins have a few remotely interesting players to toss into the rotation for the last month. Trading Willy basically guarantees that Parmelee gets every day AB's. Outside of 13 game hot month this year he has been decidedly mediocre in every opportunity as a Twin. I don't have a problem trading Willy but I find it rather uninspiring if they are going to replace his AB's with more of Parmelee/Nunez/AAAA players. Adam is at least interesting but he probably ends up in the bullpen next year. I wouldn't be surprised if he is in the rotation because the Twins want to see him throw more 5 competitive innings before the season ends. It's hard to get a read on a guy if he throws < 100 pitches competitively.
  4. This really isn't true. Imo Ryan stayed out of the 2013 FA SP class because it sucked and he knew it. Nolasco and Hughes certainly aren't bargain bin FA's and they were signed one year later in a much better FA class. Would you prefer that they signed bad pitchers for more money and years? I never said we should be happy and think Ryan was a genius for signing KC but he has (and KC) have gotten a lot of heat for not being a magician to find these mythical available good pitchers. He could have done a better job but it's hard to fault somebody for not signing a player (good SP'ing) when that player wasn't available.
  5. So TR is a wizard and can conjure something up out of nothing? The complaints about KC and TR have been that the Twins aimed low and addressed their biggest problem with a #5 starter. That was the reality of the starting pitching market that year. Neither TR nor KC should get any of the crap they have gotten about signing KC.
  6. 2013 was an awful offseason for starting pitchers. There were 2 high dollar FA's and a bunch of crap in the 10-50M range. The Twins could have spent more money for more years and they would have gotten the same results or worse. Short of a mega contract (I made a case for ignoring the whole FA market and signing Greinke) or a trade that gutted the farm system there weren't a lot of options.
  7. Right now I'm struggling to score 300 pts/wk and that just isn't going to be competitive in the playoffs. The Montas deal was more about the other prospect (Luke Jackson) but Norris is now part of my #3 starter army. Unfortunately Garza and Holland are injured so it's not much of an army. Just enough to field a rotation.
  8. The angst towards Correia is humorous. It was time to go but I'm glad the Twins had KC the last two years. it was bad enough watching all of the AAAA pitchers cycle through the rotation and get destroyed. Having one more of that craptastic quality would have been even worse.
  9. Just because Hicks would be better than Schafer or CBY doesn't mean that he should be promoted to a backup role instead of getting AB's in the minors. It's pretty clear that Hicks still has work to do in the minors. I could care less if they swapped Schafer for CBY. It literally doesn't matter at all as long as they sparingly play either of them.
  10. I don't see elite out of Rosario, Polanco, Vargas, May and probably not Thorpe. thorpe might have a little more upside but that's why he's in that range since his downside is still pretty low. There are always some decent prospects that outperform what everyone expected of them though. The key to winning for an average payroll team (10-15 highest) nowadays is to have a large core of cost controlled players while adding a couple key FA's. The Twins are currently putting that young core together with Dozier, Arcia, Gibson, Santana and now Vargas getting playing time. They are just a drop in the bucket compared to what we will see in the next couple of seasons. A few will bust but there is a lot of talent coming up.
  11. I have not even considered mlb.tv for the last 3 years. I have a baseball game on (cable TV) in the background 2-3 days/wk. I wish it was occasionally the Twins but I don't care enough to watch this ineptitude. Next year might be a different story though. Hughes/gibson/Meyer/May pitching with Vargas/buxton/Dozier/Arcia/Sano/Santana and others at some point could make for an interesting team to watch. It is a little strange to watch baseball at 7am though.
  12. I think the important part of the Vargas/Thorpe debate should be that Thorpe should be ranked a little higher. Vargas is just fine where he is although I think there's an argument that he could even be bumped up above Rosario/Polanco. In addition Rosario shouldn't be ranked below Polanco. I have been riding the Polanco bandwagon for years but I'm not knocking Rosario down too far for this season's performance. Gordon slots in at #6 right after Berrios and Stewart for me. I love the strength in the 7-12 range (and further) tbh. There are a lot of players there that could be the supporting role players on a championship team if the Twins are able to hit on a couple of their elite top prospects. That is the key to building a contender. Young near elite players surrounded by several young very good players. There's a lot of payroll flexibility in that scenario.
  13. Well it is playoff season. It will take some big luck to go anywhere this year. My team just doesn't have the firepower to compete at the top with injuries. Maybe Name can represent BYTO and make a push. He has put up some solid scores the last few weeks.
  14. I would be a rich man if I had a dollar for every time a pitcher got TJ after going the rest and rehab route with a strained elbow. It is the correct decision since it usually only delays the inevitable by a couple of months though. The Twins are certainly in a better spot pitching wise for several years. Before this year we tried to convince ourselves that pitchers with marginal stuff (Diamond, Worley, etc...) were #3's. This year it looks like we have 2 bonafide #3's and the prospects look better and are closer than they have ever been.
  15. More of Vargas please.
  16. Cedar Rapids wasn't much of a town but the park is awesome and the games are a good time. This is very good news to be locking down a longer term agreement with such a great affiliate. Especially when it seems like there is some uncertainty as to just how long the NB/ROC pairings will last.
  17. Meyer's promotion shouldn't be based on whether or not he is one of the best 5 starters but rather that it is the right time for him to be promoted. He's missed time due to injury, he's being used with kid gloves (both pitch counts and innings limits), he has walk issues and he has a really high season. He very easily could be working throwing more of X pitch to certain batters and that kind of development stops when he is promoted to the majors. In the majors you need to use your best stuff to survive and development becomes secondary. May is a different story. He has some issues although he has answered some of them but he has spent almost 3 full seasons at AA/AAA and it's about time to find out if he will sink or swim.
  18. Please elaborate on these defensive issues. Santana has always been regarded as an excellent defender in the minors. We aren't talking about Plouffe here. Plouffe had defensive question marks his entire MiLB career. Many thought Santana could stick at SS for awhile in the majors due to his glove alone. The issue that I see happening next year is that they continue to roll with Santana in CF and at that point he will have spent two years off of SS. It's difficult to move back to a demanding position like SS if/when Escobar does a Florimon impression and Polanco takes longer than expected or doesn't do well in AA/AAA.
  19. Of course Santana works to become better but it is incredibly rare that players hit significantly better in the majors than the minors. It's possible that Santana end up starting in LF after Buxton comes up but that would be more of a result of the Twins not having a better option at the time.
  20. He's by far the best option in CF for awhile but ZiPS and steamer project him as a .260/.300/.360 hitter for the rest of the season. I think those are fair projections until he makes big strides with his plate discipline. Perhaps he will continue this run but mid .600's OPS hitters usually don't rate very high on prospect lists. I don't mind Santana playing CF this year but I'm concerned that he's going to be Plan A next season until Buxton or Hicks take it away. This much time away from SS could screw up his alleged good defense.
  21. Perhaps Vargas will jolt both of my fantasy teams back to life.
  22. Why can't Hicks just stay in NB for the last month and build on his nice rebound? The Twins and also Hicks need to approach next spring training with Hicks ticketed to the minors and not even an option for the MLB team. there are actually a few stopgap CF'ers available next offseason that would make a great 4th OF'er or slide to corner spot as a short term starter. Aoki, bonifacio, davis, span (option pending), rasmus and Chris Young.
  23. The twins are screwed then. Lee has went 48-34 with a 2.94 ERA with the Phillies. The wins could be better but aside from that Lee has been awesome until he destroyed his arm.
  24. the conclusion was good but I disagree with the analysis. He is a product of Oakland. Their ballpark continually has one of the lowest BAPIP's in baseball (in the .270's) each year while Target Field has a .300's BAPIP (a little above league average). In addition he wasn't traded for gio Gonzalez. That's like saying Mulvey was traded for Johan. Peacock (not a bad prospect although lowish upside), Norris and AJ Cole were traded for gio. Milone went along for the ride.
  25. It will be interesting to see how this works out for the Rays. Neither of these players have the upside that I like for 1.5 yrs of a Cy contender. Both Franklin and Smyly could be nice MLB'ers but I have this feeling that Smyly was a sell high. It's interesting to see the three big deadline deals mostly involving MLB for MLB players. But neither of the sellers are interested in rebuilding and prospects are valued at an all time high.
