    It would be awfully expensive. O'Neill has been terrible but could be had for a comparable song. He's also the player type that can get white hot for a stretch. I'd want to see that he actually came back healthy though.

    Brent Rooker is on pace for 26.4 homers. A's on pace for 44.6 wins. We also officially have a situation in KC. Bobby Witt is on pace for 26.7 homers. Royals on pace for 46.76 wins.

    While I generally agree with this as a concept, achieving it is a whole other pickle. The Braves are the outlier, not the norm. Every manager would like an auto lineup with 2 emergency guys on the bench. It just isn't common and I believe they would love that situation. We may be in that position in a year or two and Rocco will manage differently. I would also argue the Castro role is just as valuable if you have that kind of roster as well. One guy that can pop in and not move others around is very useful. Flexibility is king. Of 4 bench spots 1 is a catcher so how else would you construct the bench? A RF DH type doesn't fit. Modern rosters will most likely have this type. If I was Gordon's agent I would be trying to get him to embrace it as the best way to maximize his value. He has to play on the dirt too.

    It's what happens when the super utility player has to play everyday. The beauty of the player type is that they can be inserted in all kinds of advantageous spots and be successful. That's also a pretty damn good OPS+ for a player in that position. The super utility role on this roster is certainly here to stay. Gordon isn't a super utility player anymore, he's just another LH outfielder that can play 2B in an emergency. Having Castro to compare with shows how limited Gordon really is. Gordon getting injured was one of the best things that could have happened roster wise for the Twins. I feel for him but he's going to have decent career as a full time ML player with the As or Royals. He's no longer a fit here. I think Castro is locked into this roster for the year. As guys get healthy he gets more valuable. I would do everything I could not to use his option so it was still available next year.

    This feels like a year to tidy up around the edges and try to get hot. I'd move Kepler and Gallo for the best rental relievers I could find and roll with Larnach, Wallner and some RH outfield type with options. When does Helman come back? Member him? Maybe Ryan Lamarre can flash for a few weeks. I wouldn't mind a Lane Thomas but he's probably expensive. I wouldn't go crazy on the open market for the RH OF. Gordon coming back will be a complication soon too. My thought is that with Stewart and Thielbar coming back just stock the bullpen as best we can and try to pitch our way through. Lean into the strength and the offense will have to come around. I like that the roster is solid top to bottom but the stars will have to star to make any noise in the postseason.

    This part is really surprising to me. If they have always loved toolsy high school outfielders one would think they would love toolsy shortstop types that eventually filter to the outfield. Not just this FO but going back 20 years and not limited to the first round either. It may be changing recently with the CES, Ross, Schoebel, Keashall types. I would personally be stocking my system with those types, then sort them out and try to keep the good ones. Trade the ones that flash and hope you can scout your own. The org is changing from a draft and develop to an asset management org and we will not likely see 20 years of the 1st round at any position again. Gutting the 2021 draft in trades is a whole new Twins Territory.

    Because they don’t figure pull, middle, oppo direction into the expected stats. It’s a basic feeder stat with a gigantic hole in it. They track hit direction, so the info is there but don’t use it where it would make sense. That’s a 1.000 BA to the pull field, 0.100 or less to center. It matters. I love analytics as much as anyone but tighten it up. Unless someone knows why they wouldn’t use that info.

    They certainly did and it would also make sense that they go last. Their numbers are penciled in while they sort the lower picks.

    They better. Not saying it has to happen but they for sure need to be thinking about things like that where you could get a free 1st rounder. That new program completely changes prospect speed.

    Its top 3 in the Cy Young or MVP for a pre-arb. The Mariners got the 29th pick and 2.55m in pool money for J-Rod rookie of the year. The Braves lost out on Micheal Harris as he didn't have enough service time, not sure if he was a qualified prospect though. Ryan does seem like the last hope for this year but it will be very interesting to see how they handle promotions going forward. The whole point is to get the young talent up quick so there will be competition. I kinda think this program makes it possible a Brooks Lee might break camp with the Twins next year. It might also affect how quickly prospects are pushed through the lower levels too. To get on the prospect rankings lists they will have to be fast movers. I was thinking about that watching Raya pitch last night. He was just on the IL and is still on an innings limit but was promoted anyway. It seems odd to bring a very young pitcher back from the IL and promote him to AA. I haven't seen anything about why but one benefit would be that it raises his prospect status. Who knows.

    Was nice to get out to see Raya and Festa in person last night. Raya looks very efficient. I was wondering if he would look high effort at his size but the delivery seems very smooth and easy. Sat comfy at 95 and the change at 88 got some Bugs Bunny swings. Firm pitch count limit still, he was not appearing to tire when he came out. Festa was fun, easy 97. Looks good too. Brooks Lee looks like Brooks Lee. Robbed by a really good catch on the line out to right. Yunior played functional 2nd base.

    The beauty would be that Micheal A Taylor would be an absolute weapon off the bench. If you could pick the pitch run, defense replacement spot each game he could be very useful, especially if replacing a Wallner type. I think it's his optimal role. That does require Buxton to stay healthy in center. We would all be nervous expecting something to snap but if it's a chronic issue pretty soon the down sides won't matter, assuming he's not at risk of further injury to the knees. They will have to roll him out until he can't do it at which point he's probably done for the year. I'm assuming if it's a chronic issue it's mostly pain and function management and not something they are scared of snapping.

    Again, I'll expect the same vigor towards the folks who claim the front office tells the hitters what to do (some even in this thread). We have nothing that tells us anything remotely like that but somehow it's gospel. Just be thankful some people have the training and experience to read between the lines and are willing to share on this forum. My comments are always aimed towards what's likely rather than the fantic fire everyone. My experience happens to be very applicable to this situation.

    Yup, and from my vantage point the piece that's missing is the old school guy. Someone needs to be stealing signs, seeing tipped pitches and that kind of thing. The data is great but it needs context to be used properly.

    I never caped up for Nelly, my initial suggestion was Molitor. You’re getting stuck on the example, not the idea. Of course it has to be the right person, but as the article points out, what are the options available?

    I’ll expect that same energy for the Rocco as a powerless puppet crowd. Meanwhile, I interviewed Nelson over the weekend and it turns out that you’re completely correct. He knows nothing about hitting, talking about hitting or figuring out what a pitcher is up too. The part about Popkins not having major league experience was on Wikipedia.

    Observatory skills and experience. Buxton, Correa and Vazquez at career norms is worth several wins already. Don't forget Miranda either. He's been so bad we all tried to forget.

    I’m not sure Cruz would be a good coach but that’s not what I want him to do. They are distinctly different skills. I want him to translate, dissect pitchers and simplify. Popkins is still the coach but Cruz is rich in the exact skills he is lacking. I don’t buy the talent argument in the least. Were they performing at an approximate level of career averages this is a 95 win team. One more run a game is top 5 in the league. That is out there for this team if they get close to career averages. I’ll even go out on a limb and say this team could go on a Braves or Phillies like run down the stretch. Full agreement on Rowson. If we should learn anything about this it’s that the 2019 season can be discarded as an outlier.
