  1. depends on how often he whiffs
  2. There might be an adjustment period and there might be not. It would have been better had the decision been made before Spring Training, but cannot help it now. When Fuld returns, he will likely have some PAs against RHPs. But this team needs no more of Danny Santana at Centerfield.
  3. The Twins just acquired a CF who has 109 OPS+ (.263/.417/.342) in the majors this season. That's Hicks' RHB slash line. He just quit switch hitting. Give him some time. All the replacement level players mention (including Sizemore) can't touch this.
  4. Get some real OFs to play the OF? Or get a manager who likes to play real OFs at the OF? If you watched today's game, Santana's glove cost the Twins at least 2 runs, Nunez' one and Parmelee's about one. "Earned" runs and ERA are jokes.
  5. They got one since last season, but he sits in the bullpen.
  6. In yesterday's Cedar Rapids Gazette, by Jeff Johson. Full story here. Subject matter was discussed in this forum previously, but this is a good story and I think that it needs some light...
  7. Even if he were Super 2, what would he earn on arbitration if he continues this performance? 800K instead of the 500K minimum?
  8. Commander Lee? As in Clone Commander Lee or as Commander Robert E. Lee (he had that title for about 3 months after Jefferson Davis released command?)
  9. Cheating? Whom? Himself? Sure He tested positive for a street drug. Not PEDs
  10. .280/.419/.320 Hicks the last 2 weeks. Straight enough for you?

Yes. They sanitize surgical instruments that are a huger source of ick on a daily basis, but will they do it correctly?

I am not sure which of the 2 choices here is the worst one for the affected clientele...
  13. I'd say that Torii Hunter might be a good potential comparable at this point. Hunter did not hit over 100 OPS+ or had WAR higher than 0.1, until his age 25 season. Also, Hicks' BABIP (unlike Hunter's) in his early MLB career is about 50-100 points less than his MiLB BABIP. Is the game too fast for him and at some point will slow down? Who knows? But I think that it is way too early to give up on him.

I really feel sorry for the patrons of the establishment that will win those.
  15. The AAA agreement is up again for renewal this off-season, so changes might happen in more places than New Britain. The Miracle agreement is even up for renewal, but nothing is happening there. (The Kernels' affiliation is good until 2016 and the Twins own their 3 rookie league teams.) As far as PCL goes (in which about 3/4 of the agreements expire), the Pacific and Mountain ballparks (Pacific Conference, like the former Twins' affiliates' Portland and SLC) inflate statistics, but the league has teams in the South and Midwest (American Conference,) whose ball parks play average. I think that there are advantages of playing in warmer weather because teams actually play in April instead of having rain-outs and snow-outs and having to make them up with 7 inning double headers. The first minor league affiliate of the Twins' Franchise (the Lookouts, AA SL) is up for grabs and so are the Sounds, so a move to Tennessee from the Northeast might be intriguing. (Not that I'd personally like it.) I like what Atlanta and St. Louis have done (they own all of their affiliates.) It requires some investment, but I think that it pays major dividends in the long term for a lot of reasons. I'd love it if the Twins did the same, starting with the Miracle.
  16. BA? Season to date, Hicks has a .331 OBP, Fuld .291, Colabello .286. Hicks is 6 years younger than Colabello and 8 years younger than Fuld. Guess who of the 3 belongs to the majors?
  17. With the Twins half a game behind the second Wild Card? Hoping for tanking should not be an option at this point
  18. 2-3 months? Pretty low. His BABIP is about 50 points over his (pretty consistent) career average. This gives him a wOBA of about .350. Subtract those 50 points and his slash line is start looking more like .250/.310/.370, which is his norm.
  19. The fans do not vote for pitchers And the Twins need a representative. And if nobody is voted by the fans, one will be chosen by John Farrell. I suspect that Cano and Pedroia will be ahead of Dozier, so Hughes will likely make it...
  20. The issue here is that with the first option the Twins have him until his age 31 season (inclusive) and with the second until his age 33 season. I'd go with door number 1, see what Rosario/Polanco/Goodrum and Co are doing around 2016 and hope he holds up so the Twins can trade him high (for a change.) Also I'd rather see that $22 M go towards Sano or Buxton in 2021...
  21. Yeah, that's Newmie: http://i2.cdn.turner.com/si/dam/assets/140508123334-2004-kirby-puckett-derek-jeter-single-image-cut.jpg
  22. Exactly. And the how you do something is as important as what you do, especially if (let's say) you are interested in having free agents come to your team. Calling a player (employee) out publicly is never a good move. What Antony did is exactly what George Steinbrenner and Calvin Griffith used to do to their players. If one has an opinion about Steinbrenner's and Griffith's behavior then, he/she should have the same opinion about Antony's now, in order to be consistent...
  23. Originally published at The Tenth Inning Stretch ----- Phil Hughes so far (8 starts, about a quarter of the season) has been the Minnesota Twins' best pitcher and should definitely have All-Star consideration. In addition to his old school 4-1, 3.61 ERA, he has 7.6 K/9, 6.7 K/BB, and 1.225 WHIP. This translates to a 41.6 PE, which is in Ace territory. Take into consideration that he achieved that with a .326 BABIP (thanks to the Twins' playing catchers, shortstops and designated hitters at the outfield), and his numbers become ever more impressive: Adjusted WHIP: 1.09, xPE: 46.8, FIP 2.94. The strikeouts (20.3% K-rate and 7.6 K/9) are especially a welcome departure from the usual for the Twins. Last season was a horrible season for Hughes, but still his K-rate was high (and has been, it has 18.9% and 20.3%, last season and the season before last, respectively) and was going deep into games. This game, against the eventual AL West champions, could have been a mirror image of his last appearance with the Twins: [video=youtube;o1ZLa74Wlcg] All in all, Phil Hughes is up to a great start and it should not be all that surprising. According to this analysis, he was a solid two to three starter last season, and based on this analysis, he was a good, but not a top 3, pitcher for the Twins to target last off-season.
  24. I don't agree with the bolded above: - Dozier is 27, Rosario is 22. They have 5 years age difference. Rosario will be 26 when Dozier is scheduled to be a free agent - If Rosario proves to be a good player (and his ceiling is higher than Dozier's,) the Twins should sell high on Dozier and fill a position of need (and I am not sure what that need would be in 2015 or 2016 or so.) The Twins just got to learn how to do that (or get a GM who can do that.) This is what competitive teams (from the Rays, to the As, to the Tigers, to the Red Sox, to name a few) do. Short term (2014) might make sense to have Rosario play the OF, because, frankly, I'd rather see him than Danny Santana or Eric Farris at CF.
  25. I like this. So the Twins the last 20 some years were hovering between Dumb Luck and Poetic Justice. Beats the Rock and the Hard Place...
